DESCRIPTION

You will be aware from extensive news coverage that the civil war in Syria has caused the largest humanitarian crisis the world has ever known.More than 4.25 million people are displaced within the Syrian war zone and almost 2 million refugees are hosted by nearby countries. The UN advises more than half of those in refugee camps are children. All of them are in urgent need of help with food, water, shelter and more. The situation is likely to get worse as the war enters its third year. Winter is coming, there is strong evidence of chemical weapons being used, and the United States has left open the option of air strikes if diplomatic efforts to deal with the threat of chemical weapons fail. Anglican Overseas Aid (formerly Anglicord) has launched the ‘Syria in Crisis Appeal’ to support our partners responding to the needs of the most vulnerable in Syria and surrounding countries. It is our understanding that no other Australian Anglican agency has launched a major appeal for the Syria crisis.I would very much appreciate it if you could send this information through to your clergy and agencies to include in their weekly pew bulletins, newsletters, papers and prayer points. I have attached a flyer that parishes can insert into their pew bulletin, and they can also use the following paragraph if the flyer is too large:Syria in Crisis Appeal – millions need your help nowThe civil war raging in Syria has caused the largest humanitarian crisis the world has ever known. More than 4.25 million people are displaced within the Syrian war zone and almost 2 million refugees are hosted by nearby countries. You can help provide urgent assistance to families in need by donating to Anglican Overseas Aid’s ‘Syria in Crisis Appeal’. Funds will be directed to partner agencies working with people in Syria itself. Donate securely online at www.anglicanoverseasaid.org.au, or Freecall 1800 249 880. Your contribution will make a difference. Can you also please encourage your clergy and people to pray for:• The innocent men, women and children of Syria who have been caught up in the conflict, those still in Syria itself, and those in refugee camps in nearby countries.• For the many agencies and their staff who are working tirelessly to support all those in need.• For all involved in the conflict – both the Syrian Government and rebel groups – that they may be prompted to seek a peaceful resolution to their differences.• For the global community – that we may find ways to help promote a peaceful and just resolution to the conflict.• That the people of the world will give generously to support those who have been affected by the conflict. For more information about the situation and our Syria in Crisis Appeal, please refer to our website at: http://anglicanoverseasaid.org.au/our-work/current-emergenciesThank you in advance for your support and compassion for the people of Syria.Yours in Christ,The Rev’d Bob Mitchell, Chief Executive, Anglican Overseas Aid
