They are also used for the preparation of metal selenolate complexes which are precursors for M/Se materials and have relevance as intermedi- ates in a biologically important process involving glutathione peroxidase. Synthesis of bis[2-(dimethylaminomethyl)phenyl]diselenide is presented along with its further reactions with halogens and mercury. Spectroscopic and structural studies of these compounds are discussed. Also discussed are some catalytic reactions of the diselenide ligand. These studies emphasize the importance of intramolecular (Se... N) stabilisa- tion in these compounds. * For correspondence 296

Diselenides are an important category of organoselenium compounds as they can be transformed under different conditions into important reagents which find applica- tions in organic syntheses.
