Symbian FileBrowser User’s Guide 3

1. Introduction FileBrowser is a system utility application for Symbian phones running S60 3rd Edition or later. It displays the

hierarchical structure of files, and folders for internal and external drives (such as memory cards). It can be used

to perform general file handling tasks, for example to copy, move, rename, delete, and view file properties. It also

has some additional features, such as the listing of all files or applications in the system.

FileBrowser offers the basic file and folder handling tools for moving, copying, cutting, and pasting files and

folders.

After any operation (such as moving, sending, or deleting files), FileBrowser displays the number of successful

and failed actions. If as single operation is performed and it fails, generic Symbian OS error codes are displayed.

For example, error code —14 is displayed if you attempt to delete a file that is currently being used by another

program. For more information on error codes, see Appendix B, ‘Priority values for data types’.

You can view the listing of error codes for each file and folder entry and also recursively, if applicable, via RDebug.

This document describes how to use FileBrowser on both touch and non-touch Symbian phones.

Symbian FileBrowser User’s Guide 4

2. Installation Using the Nokia_FileBrowser.sis file, you can install FileBrowser onto a phone running any of the following:

‒ S60 3rd Edition (initial release).

‒ S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1.

‒ S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2.

‒ S60 5th Edition.

‒ Symbian^3, including Symbian Anna and Symbian Belle.

You can use any of the normal mechanism for transferring the SIS file to your phone and installing it, such as

Nokia Suite installation or transfer over a Bluetooth connection and opening the transferred file.

By default, FileBrowser is installed in the RnD Tools folder, which is created if it’s not present on your phone.

FileBrowser is started as usual by selecting or tapping its application icon.

Symbian FileBrowser User’s Guide 5

3. Basic file operations FileBrowser opens displaying a view in which drives can be selected, as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1: The list of drives in the simple and extended views is shown.

3.1 Changing the file view FileBrowser offers a simple and extended view for displaying file information in the browser.

The simple view displays:

‒ For drives, the drive letter and media type.

‒ For folders the folder name,

‒ For files, the file name and extension.

The extended view displays, in addition to the simple view information:

‒ For drives, the free and total space.

‒ For folders, the creation date and time.

‒ For files, the file size.

Symbian FileBrowser User’s Guide 6

To set the view:

1. Go to Options > Settings > File view

2. Select

.

Extended or Simple

3. Toggle

If the phone has volume keys, use them to scroll the screen up or down one page at a time.

The Star (*) and Hash (#) keys can be used to scroll the screen up or down respectively.

Note: If the phone does not have the Edit key, the Hash key is reserved for the Edit function.

3.9 Viewing and editing files in text or hex format

to exit.

In FileBrowser, you can view and edit files both in text and hexadecimal modes. The hex mode consists of a series

of two digits (0-9 and A-F) separated by a space. Each of these stands for an 8-bit value. It represents the binary

code in a more readable way.

The supported text formats are: ASCII/ANSI, UTF-8, UTF-16 Little Endian (LE), and UTF-16 Big Endian (BE). UTF

formats are recognised by the byte-order mark, which is a special Unicode character that occurs at the beginning

of a file or a character string.

Symbian FileBrowser User’s Guide 12

Figure 5 shows an example illustrating the two options.

Figure 5: An example HTML file viewed in text and in hex modes is shown.

While viewing a file, you can switch the text format from the Options

You can use the volume key to scroll the screen up and down. Alternatively, the Star (*) and Hash (#) keys can be

menu.

To edit a file:

1. Select the file you want to edit.

2. Go to Options > File > Edit

3. Select either

.

As text or As hex

Editing is always performed in Unicode because it supports all characters, unlike the more limited ASCII/ANSI

and UTF-8.

.

Tip: When editing a file, you can switch the text format from the Options

4. To save, go to

menu.

Options and select either Save or Save format

The latter option enables you to select the text format: ASCII/ANSI, UTF-8, UTF-16 LE, and UTF-16 BE.

.

When the file is saved as hex, FileBrowser notifies you if there are problems with the format. The correct format

consists of two digits (0-9 and A-F), separated by a space.

4. Advanced disk and file management tasks

FileBrowser offers various tools for disk management, including drive formatting, scanning and checking,

password management and setting the name and volume label of a drive.

There are also various file management tools such as list creation (applications, files and attachments), installing

and uninstalling the extended errors feature, and displaying memory information.

stored in the active messaging store.

The entries in the text file are indented based on their hierarchy. The information provided on each entry

includes the ID, service ID, related ID, type, mtm, date, size, error, biotype, mtmdata1, mtmdata2, mtmdata3,

description and details.

To generate a dump of messaging store walk, go to Options > Tools > Dump msg. store walk.

4.4 Installing and Uninstalling extended errors FileBrowser can be used to manage extended errors on the phone. When the extended errors are enabled, the

error dialog includes the panic category and the error code (for example, App. closed: APPNAME KERN—EXEC

3). Also system errors, which are hidden by default, are displayed on the screen.

To enable extended errors:

5. Go to Options > Tools

6. Select

.

Install extended errors

Once extended errors have been installed the

.

Tools option changes to Uninstall extended errors

4.5 Simulating errors

— Calls the User::Leave function with a leave code you can define.

Panic

— Calls the User::Panic function with panic category name and panic code you can define.

Exception

3. On the next screen, depending on the chosen error item, enter the code that is called.

— Calls the User::RaiseException function with exception code you can define.

For information on extended errors, see Chapter 4.5, ‘Installing and Uninstalling extended errors’.

4.6 Associating data types with applications A data type (or MIME type) is an identifier for audio, image, text, and video file formats among other. The data

type is expressed as a two-part identifier, such as text/plain or audio/mpeg. Files of a certain data type can be

opened with an application assigned for this purpose. If there are several possible applications, the one that has

the highest priority value is used.

FileBrowser can display the available data types and associated applications. You can also change these

mappings, as well as assign a priority value to an application for handling a data type.

Symbian FileBrowser User’s Guide 21

To see the data types and change their associations:

1. Go to Options > Tools > Edit data types

2. Select

.

Options > Change mapping Figure 7 and a list of applications is displayed, as shown in :

Figure 7: Application selection view is shown.

view, define the level of priority that the application has for opening the data type. For

more information on the priority options, see , ‘Priority values for data types’.

To restore default mappings later, select Options > Tools > Edit data types > Set to default mapping.

Symbian FileBrowser User’s Guide 22

Appendix A Priority values for data types Table 1 lists the priority values that you can use when associating an application with a particular data type.

Priority value associated with a data (MIME) type:

Use to associate an application with a data type:

Maximum Choose this priority for mistrusted applications that reside in \private\10003a3f\import\apps. This value is a threshold priority that prevents any mistrusted applications from claiming a priority higher than the threshold.

High Choose this priority for an application that is always, without exceptions, used to handle the data type. Use sparingly.

Normal Choose this priority when the data type is the primary type for the application. For example, text/plain files for a text editor.

Low Choose this priority when the data type is a secondary type for the application. For example, text/plain files for a web browser.

Last resort Choose this priority when the data type is the last resort for the application, that is, when there are no other options.

Table 1: Priority values for associating an application with a data type are listed.
