and hard to reach. Labor costs arefurther cut because these lamps lastover twice as long as regular in-candescent types. In addition, yousave on equipment. Because Reflec-tor Lamps contain their own re-flectors, you don't have to go toconsiderable expense of buying ex-ternal reflectors.

The versatility of PAR and R lamps allows many differentunits to be used in combinations to obtain a desired effeet. The effeetiveness of any installation depends upon theseleetion of lamps with appropriate beamspreads andcandlepower values. Most PAR and R lamps are available in both "spot"and "flood" types. The spot or nanow distribution is bestsuited for installations where a long nanow beam is desiredor for high levels of display lighting. The flood or widedistribution is most effective for short throws or generalIighting.Figure 1 shows the distances and planes of measurementused to determine the approximate initial footcandlevalues shown in tables I and II for single PAR and Riamps. Therefore "A" in tables I and II gives the foot-candle value on a horizontal plane with the lamp aimedstraight down. "8" shows the footcandle value on a hori-zontal plane with the lamp aimed at the point of measure-ment. "C" is the footcandle value on a vertical plane withthe lamp aimed at the point of measurement.

EXAMPIE:A 150 watt PAR 38 spot lamp is aimed at a mannequin in adepariment store. The face of the mannequin is 4 feet below and 3 feet toone side of the lamp. From Table l, the vertical illumination is 273 foot-candles and the horizontal illumination is 3/2 footcandles.

EXAMPLE: A counter is illuminated by a single row of 200 watt R-40 floodlamps aimed downward. The lamps are 4 feet apart and 6 feet above thecounier. What is the horizontal illumination on the counter top?Since Table ll is based on 300 watt lamps, it will be convenient to firsdetermine the values for 300 watt lamps and ihen apply the correctionfactor. The horizontal lllumination under a lamp, from that lamp alone, is78 footcandles. However, the adjoining lamp on each side will supply 18 footcandles, sothe total will be 78 * 18 * 18 : 114 footcandles.Halfway between two lamps, the illumination will be 50 footcandles fromeach adjacent lamp and 6 footcandles from the next lamp over. (Horizontadistance 6 feet.) The total will be 50* 50+ 6+ 6:112 footcandles. For 200 watt lamps, the values will be67/oof these, or 76 and 75foot-candles. (Footcandle values for individual lamps may vary.)

Coefficients of utilization for the larger R-52 lamps, specif-ically designed for general lighting applications, are givenin Table III. The initial lumen ratings for the variousR-52 lamps are given on page 10.
