FOREWORDBharatanatyamoriginatedmanycenturiesagointhetemplesofTamilNaduinSouthIndia.Itisknownforitsstronglinesthatmakegeometricandsymmetricalshapesaswellasitsturn-outpositionbywhichitiscommonlyrecognised.Thedanceformisembellishedwithintricatelyexpressivehandgesturesandelaboratefacialexpressionsthatlendtothestory-tellingaspectofthisstyle.
Themārgam,whichistheformatofatraditionalBharatanatyampresentation,wasformalisedbytheTanjoreQuartetinthesecondhalfoftheeighteenthcentury.Traditionally,thetrainingprogrammeforBharatanatyamdancershasbeenorganisedaroundthismārgam.Bharatanatyamdancers,tothisday,generallyfollowthisformatinatraditionalpresentation.TheISTDsyllabusisdesignedcloselytoreflecttraditionalteachingwhilstconsideringtheneedsandexperiencesofpresent-daystudentsworldwide.
StudentsofclassicalIndiandance,otherthanthoseinIndia,areinanenvironmentthatmaynotnecessarilycomplementtheirexperienceofBharatanatyamtraining.This˙syllabus,therefore,isbasedontheinvestingoftimeandeffortintheearlyGrades,tocreatethenecessaryphysicalandculturalinfrastructureforthedancerintraining.
Thesyllabusalsoaccommodatessomechangesinthetraditionallearningprogressionofdancematerial.Itpromotesholisticdanceexperienceattheinitialstages,evenbeforeeachaspectofthephysicaltraininghasbeenmastered.Studentsarealsoencouragedtoseedanceperformancesinordertogainaculturalandcriticalunderstanding,andalivelyinterestinBharatanatyamandinthewiderhorizonsofdance.
TheISTDsyllabusprovidesastructureequallysuitedtostudentsofanyofthedifferentbāņisofBharatanatyam,withoutfavouringoneoveranother.

METHODOFASSESSMENTThePrimaryClassExaminationisassessedexternallybyvisitingexaminersrecruitedandtrainedbytheISTD.Thetitlesofthecomponentsandthemarksattainablearedetailedabove.Theoverallmarkisgivenoutof100andtheoverallresultisindicatedasfollows:Grade Marks

BHARATANATYAMGRADEDEXAMINATIONS:GRADES1-6INTRODUCTIONRATIONALE Bharatanatyammakesadistinctivecontributiontotheeducationofallstudents,inthatitusesmovement,whichisthefundamentalmodeofhumanexpression.Itoffersarangeoflearningopportunitiesandenablesparticipantstoenjoyphysicalexpressionaswellasdevelopintellectualsensibilities.AstheyworktogetherinBharatanatyam,candidateslearnaboutco-operationanddevelopanunderstandingoftheshapingofmovementintoartisticformsofexpression.
GradedExaminationsinBharatanatyamareconcernedwithprogressivemasteryindefinedstageswithinthecontextofsafedancepractice.
AIMSTheaimofGradedExaminationsistoprovideanassessmentschemefordance,whichgivesthebasisforthemeasurementoftheindividualcandidate'sprogressanddevelopment,whetherthecandidateispursuingdanceasaleisureactivityoraspreparationforaprofessionalcareerasadanceteacherorperformer.Therearesixpracticalexaminationgrades,numberedfrom1to6,inordertoindicatetheincreasingorderofdifficulty(6representsthehighestlevelofattainment).OBJECTIVESTheobjectivesoftheBharatanatyamGradedExaminationsyllabusaresetoutbelow:
• ToimpartpracticalskillsinBharatanatyamasitismanifesttodayinitstraditionalform,complementedby appropriatebackgroundknowledgeandunderstandingoftheart,throughaprogrammeoftrainingand assessment.• Tolayaholisticfoundationeitherasanelementinaliberaleducationorasapreparationforvocational traininginBharatanatyamorotherdance-basedcareers,integratingthemajoraspectsoftheartform, includingthemovementvocabulary,theexperienceofperformanceandanunderstandingoftherelevant musicandliterature.• TodevelopanawarenessandappreciationofBharatanatyaminthecontextofawiderdanceworld.
LEARNINGANDPROGRESSIONCandidatesdeveloptheskillandunderstandingofBharatanatyam,atthesametimeasbuildingasoundtechnique,bydevelopingthephysicalabilitytocommunicatethroughmovementinanexpressiveandartisticway.Aclearlydefinedstructureallowslearningtotakeplaceinthecontextofsafedancepractice.TheGradedExaminationsbuildupprogressively,ensuringthatstepsandskillslearnedatlowerlevelsprepareformorecomplexmovementsasthecandidateprogresses.

EachBharatanatyamGradedExaminationallowscandidatestoprogresstothenexthighergradeintheBharatanatyamgenre.Also,arangeoftransferstootherdancegenresbecomespossibleasthecandidatedevelopsphysicallyandlearnscommonskillssuchasrunning,gesture,posture,timingandrhythmicawareness.Inthisway,withadditionalteachinginput,thecandidateisabletodevelopabroadbaseofdancingskills.
FollowingonfromtheGradedExaminations,candidatesmaywishtoprogresstotheVocationalGradedExaminationsaspreparationforemploymentasaprofessionaldanceroraspreparationfordanceteachingqualifications.
TheGradedExaminationsinBharatanatyamalsoallowforthoseparticipatingsolelyforrecreationalpurposestoproducequalityworkinasafedancecontext.ENTRYCONDITIONSANDGENERALINFORMATION AGELIMITSThereisnoupperorloweragelimitforenteringtheBharatanatyamGradedExaminations.Itisrecommended,however,thatteachersensurethatcandidatesareatanappropriatelevelofmaturitytomeetandenjoythedemandsofthesyllabus.Itisrecommendedthatchildrenandadultsarenotenteredatthesametime.PRIORLEARNINGTheGradedExaminationsinBharatanatyamareintendedtobetakenconsecutivelyandmostcandidateswillwishtoprogressthroughtheminsequenceinordertodevelopanddemonstratetherequisiteskills.However,incaseswhereexaminationsareundertakenwithoutsuccessatthepreviousgrade,thecandidateneedstobeatanappropriatelevelofphysicalandartisticdevelopment.BeforeacandidateenrolsinaclassleadingtoaGradedExamination,teachersareunderaparticularduty,therefore,toassesstheachievementofthecandidate,particularlywithregardtosafedancepractice.GENDERDISTINCTIONSTheexaminationdoesnotrequirethedancertomakeagenderspecificpresentation.Malesandfemalescanbepresentedtogether.TIMEALLOWANCES/NUMBEROFCANDIDATESCandidatesarenormallyexaminedingroupsofthree.Wherethisisnotpossible,candidatesshouldbeenteredinpairs.Inexceptionalcircumstances,asinglecandidatecanbeentered,forexampleiftheteacherisnotenteringanyotherGrade1candidateswhohavelearntthesameprepareddancesequence.ForGrades1-6thethreecandidatesshowaprepareddancesequencesimultaneously,followingwhichtheyeachinturnanswerquestionsabouttheprepareddancesequencetheyhaveshown,aboutotherelementsofthesyllabus,andtheymaybeaskedtodancetodemonstratetheirunderstanding.Theexaminationofthecandidatestakesthefollowingtotaltime.

REASONABLEADJUSTMENTSTheISTDpolicyandprocedureforallreasonableadjustmentsforallqualificationsiscontainedwithintheEqualOpportunitiespolicyontheISTDwebsite.TheVocationalGradedExaminationsaredesignedforthosewhoareintendingtopursueacareerindance,eitherasaperformerorasateacher.Itis,therefore,veryunlikelythatapotentialperformerwillrequirereasonableadjustments.However,apotentialteachermustbeabletodemonstrateallmovementsprecisely,inordertoteachthemeffectively.

Asthe‘Intermediate’examinationisalsonowincludedasaunitwithintheDiplomainDanceInstruction,itislikelysomecandidateswillapplyforadjustments.Thisisbecausetheyare:
• Thosecandidateswhoarepossiblyalreadyteachingandwhodonothavethestaminaormuscular strengththatisnormallyrequiredatthislevel,anditwouldbedeemedtobeunsafetorequirethem toperformusingthesamedegreeofstrengthandstaminaasayoungerdancer.• Candidateswhodonothavesufficientphysicalfacilitytoperformthemovementsatspeedtothe requiredstandard,butwhocanneverthelessdemonstratethemataslowerpace.• Candidateswho,throughtheirphysicalmakeup,wouldbecausinginjurytothemselves,e.g.verystiff feet.
ThesamecriteriaapplytocandidatesatAdvanced1and2level.SuchcandidatesmustapplytotheCustomerServicesandQualityAssuranceDepartment,usingtheApplicationforReasonableAdjustmentsform,atleastthreeweekspriortotheexaminationentry,givingdetailedreasonsfortherequest.ThiswillbeprocessedgivingtheFacultyopportunitytorefusespecialconditions,recommendadditionalexaminationtime,orgivefurtherdetailedguidance.Inprinciple,theexaminationmustnotbeweightedtogiveanadvantagetoeitherthecandidatewithreasonableadjustmentsortheablebodiedcandidate.Thedemandsonbothmustbeequal.Reasonableadjustmentswillbegenerallygrantedforcertainspecificsectionsoftheexamination,andcandidatesshouldindicatewhichofthesectionsmightbeaffected.Candidatesshouldattemptallmovementsandthroughout,mustdancetothebestoftheirownphysicalability.Intheinterestsofsafetyandtofacilitateaccuracyofmovement,somecandidatesmayindicatetheirowntempoandmaytakeextrapausesforbreathasnecessary.Ifrequired,questionsmaybeasked,andthesewillbephrasedinsuchawayastoclarifytheknowledgeofthemechanicsofthemovement.Questioningisnotpermittedforeverysectionoftheexaminationandwouldnormallybeusedinamaximumoftwosections.

Examinersreturntheresultsandreportsheetsassoonaspossibleaftertheexamination.ThereportsheetsforeachcandidateareindividuallycheckedwithintheQualityAssurancedepartmentforadministrativeaccuracy.UndernormalcircumstancesthereportsheetsforUKexaminationswillbeissuedtotheteacherwithin21workingdaysoftheexamination.Anyerrorsfoundarecorrectedbytheexaminerpriortofurtherprocessingofthewholeexaminationsession,andmaythereforeextendthesetimings,althoughthedepartmentwillmakeeveryefforttoprocesstheseasrapidlyaspossible.AllresultsareenteredbySections,andcheckedforachievingtheminimumpasslevels,perSectionandintotal,andcorrectlevelsofattainmentagainstthetotalmarkachieved.Resultsarethenclearedforcertificateissue,whichisundertakenbytheCustomerServicesandQualityAssurancedepartment,andshouldbewithin6to8weeksoftheexamination.Copiesofallreportsheetsandresultsareheldonarchiveforreferenceasnecessary.
RE-TAKESCandidateswhoarenotsuccessfulmaynotre-taketheexaminationuntil3monthsaftertheoriginalexamination.
REGULATION
ISTDGradedandVocationalGradedExaminations,theDiplomainDanceInstruction,DiplomainDanceEducationandDiplomainDancePedagogyareregulatedbyOfqualinEngland;QualificationsWalesinWales;andtheCouncilfortheCurriculumExaminationsandAssessment(CCEA)inNorthernIreland.
TheRegulatedQualificationsFramework(RQF)providesasingle,simplesystemforcataloguingallregulatedqualifications,indicatingqualificationsbytheirlevel(degreeofdifficulty)andsize(amountorbreadthoflearning).Sizeisindicatedbyacreditvalue,correspondingtoatermusedinthetitle.AnAwardisworth1-12credits,aCertificateisworth13-36credits,andaDiplomaisworth37ormorecredits.Onecreditcorrespondsto10hoursoflearningforthetypicallearner,whichisdividedintoGuidedLearninghours(GLH),whichisbroadlycontacttimewiththeteacher,andpersonalstudytime,whichtogethermakeTotalQualificationTime(TQT).TheISTD’squalificationsontheRegulatedQualificationsFrameworkareasfollows:
