Formulate interpretations of artwork and support them with appropriate visual and iconographical analyses 4. Examine and summarize relationships between art and society within historical, social, cultural and philosophical contexts. 5. Identify major works of art and architecture from historical periods and explain their significance. 6. Identify major artists and explain their contributions to the evolution of art/architecture 7. Explain the functions and meanings of art and architecture within their historical and cultural contexts. Student Learning Outcomes: As a result of this learning experience students can: 1. Identify works of art and understand the concept of chronology and historical cultures. 2. Analyze and evaluate works of art in both through essays and critical thinking.

Course Description: Students will be introduced to the study of western art of Europe and America through the 14 th

Requirements: 1. ONE Midterm exam and ONE final examination.2. Six weekly modules based on reading and online lectures, to be completed each

week.3. WEEKLY Online discussion board activity (two topics each week)4. ONE 2 page TYPED paper based on observations and comparison between works

seen in person at a museum.5. Students are required to read all assigned chapters, participate in the class

discussion board and in the chat room.

Grading: Grading Scale

Participation/Discussion board 50 points 275-300 points = AModule & Assignments 25 points each 249-274 points = BPaper 35 points 223-248 points = CMidterm Exam 45 points 197- 222 points = DFinal Exam 45 points 0- 196 points = F

Total Points: 300

You will receive grades on all assigned work. Midterm and Final exams will consist of; several identification of artist, analysis of style, and time period, several comparisons of art works and short answer questions. There will be no make-up for missed assignments and exams. There will be no extra credit for this course.

Discussion boardEach week two discussion topics will be posted featuring different topics based on the chapter we will be covering in the text. You are to participate in each discussion topic, asking questions, giving observations based on the information posted. You are required to participate in these weekly discussions. One post per discussion twice a week for 5 weeks, each post is worth 5 points for a total of 50 points. One word comments will not count, this is to be well thought out meaningful discussion, relative to the weeks topic. Make sure you keep up with the weekly discussion topics as you will not be able to make this up during the duration of the course.

Modules& AssignmentsModules will be posted each Monday morning at 10:00 AM and Wednesday at 10:00 AM. The Module assignments will be made available on Thursday 11:00 AM and you will have until the following Sunday night at 11:59 PM to complete it. At that time the weeks assignment and module will be closed to begin the new weeks Module. This means you must keep up with the class every week. You will need to complete each module. If you miss a module, or assignment you will not be able to make it up the following week or at a later time. There are a total of 5 Module assignments each worth 25 points for a total of 125 points.

PaperThe Paper assignment will require that you go to a museum and view artworks in person. I will post the paper assignment on June 29th outlining the assignment and the

requirements. The paper is worth 35 points and should outline your viewpoints. It will not be a research paper but a paper on your impressions. Do not utilize the Internet to write your paper. Do not plagiarize. Plagiarized papers are considered cheating and will result in a failed grade and you will be reported to the Dean of Academic Affairs and will result in further disciplinary action.

Midterm ExamThe Midterm Exam is worth 45 points; it will be posted online and will have a timed element to it. Once you begin the midterm you will have to complete it within the time allowed. It will be a combination of identifying artists, styles, short essays comparing and contrasting works of art, short answer and multiple-choice questions. The Midterm will be testing you on lectures from the modules; discussion topics and the chapters in the textbook covered in the first half of the semester.

Student Policies:

Los Angeles Community College District Board Rule #91101.1 (b) authorizes an instructor to remove a disruptive student from the class for the day of the incident and the next class meeting. The removal of students from the class by the instructor for disruptive behavior, inappropriate of rude comments posted, cheating, or any other violation of the District Code of Conduct is known as a “48 hour” suspension. If further action is needed, the instructor via the department can file a notice of disciplinary action Chair, the Chief Instructional Officer and the Office of Student Services. As this is an online class I expect meaningful and respectful comments posted on the discussion board and in the chat room. Any use of profanity, rude or disrespectful comments will be considered a violation of the board rule.

Anyone missing a week without logging in and participating in the class without consulting the instructor may be DROPPED from the class. If any student stops attending the class, it is his/her responsibility to drop. A failing grade will be assigned at the end of the semester to those students who stop attending and do not drop themselves from the class.
