Course Description

ELL (English Language Learners) is an English course designed to meet the English language needs of students for whom English is not a first or native language, and who have been tested and identified as eligible for the Walton County Public School district’s ELL services.

Daily writing practice is emphasized with journal responses to current events or individual issues. We work on weekly vocabulary units presenting words in cross-curriculum context. Students read articles in which the vocabulary is featured, practice the vocabulary throughout the week in a variety of exercises, and will then take a quiz testing their ability to spell the word and use it in a sentence correctly. In addition to the daily and weekly assignments, literature and writing are taught with a multi-faceted approach, utilizing texts specifically written for the ELL, as well as district-mandated curriculum. Discussion of literature offers students an opportunity to express views, form questions, and focus on analysis of the text in a sheltered environment.

Each spring, students take the Oklahoma-mandated WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment) test for Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. When students achieve proficiency on this series of tests, they exit the Walton County School district ELL program. Students new to the district in the fall take the WIDA Access (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners) test.

At all times, diversity is respected, and cultural differences honored.
