PLEASE NOTE: This syllabus serves more than one function. It is designed to be both a typical syllabus and an object of analysis throughout the course. A large part of our classroom effort is geared toward analyzing document design: what choices were made, why they were made, what restrictions were imposed, and how these things have affected the clarity, tone, ethos, etc. of the document. The shortcomings of a pure-text document become more obvious as the semester continues, especially when there are a large number of multimodal readings online (due to the format, hypertext links are forbidden, and URLs are often too long to be placed in the itinerary). Other limitations exist in plenty, and students are encouraged to find them. In short: this is a highly unorthodox syllabus format--but it is designed this way on purpose.

PLEASENOTE:

Thissyllabusservesmorethanonefunction.Itisdesignedtobebothatypicalsyllabusandanobjectofanalysisthroughoutthecourse.Alargepartofourclassroomeffortisgearedtowardanalyzingdocumentdesign:whatchoicesweremade,whytheyweremade,whatrestrictionswereimposed,andhowthesethingshaveaffectedtheclarity,tone,ethos,etc.ofthedocument.Theshortcomingsofapure-textdocumentbecomemoreobviousasthesemestercontinues,especiallywhentherearealargenumberofmultimodalreadingsonline(duetotheformat,hypertextlinksareforbidden,andURLsareoftentoolongtobeplacedintheitinerary).Otherlimitationsexistinplenty,andstudentsareencouragedtofindthem.
