Course Description: This course is designed to introduce students to higher education and the college experience including orientation to college life and higher education resources. Explores graduation, transfer, career options, factors in educational decision-making, and educational planning. In addition, this Summer Bridge COUN 1 course will provide academic, counseling and social support for your English/Math course. This course is part of a learning community with English/Math and LCOM 80.

Student Learning Outcome (SLO): Students will identify two Student Services and how they will assist in their academic success. Course Measurable Objectives: 1. Identify and evaluate the various college resources available. 2. Develop educational timelines. 3. Compare, contrast, and synthesize information regarding options in higher education. 4. Apply critical thinking and effective decision-making skills in establishing educational goals. 5. Design an educational plan to achieve educational goals. 6. Self-assess level of college preparation Academic Honesty All students are expected to fulfill the rights and responsibilities outlined in the Mount San Antonio College Student Code. The college considers plagiarism and cheating to be voluntary act for which there may be reason, but for which there is no acceptable excuse. The submission of work which is not a product of the student’s own effort is dishonest and is subject to severe disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from the college. It is important to understand that collaborative learning is considered cheating unless specifically allowed by the professor. Student Standards of Conduct All students are required to abide by the Standards of Conduct set up by Mt. San Antonio College. Students displaying or demonstrating in the listed behavior may result in removal from the class or further discipline action permitted by the college’s grievance process. Syllabus Revision The instructor, as needed during the course, may revise the syllabus. Revisions may address both the schedule and the content of the material presented. Students will receive ample notice of revisions. Dropping courses It is your responsibility as the student to drop or withdraw from any of your courses. Please refer to page 20 in the Mt. SAC catalog for additional information and if you have any questions please feel free
to contract the instructor. Before dropping any of your Summer Bridge courses you must see your
Bridge counselor. Disabled Student Programs & Services Mt. San Antonio College is committed to providing a classroom environment in which all students may achieve their potential. If any students have a disability that limits their ability to participate fully and equally in any college instructional program and/or activity, they are encouraged to visit Disabled Student Programs & Services, located on the lower level of the Student Services Center (Building 9B). Videos will be shown as part of the curriculum for this class. Students desiring/requiring captioning or subtitles, may ask the professor in advance to turn on the captioning. Alternatively, students may seek assistance from a third party, such as Disabled Student Programs & Services (909 274-4290, or Human Resources (909) 274-4225. Attendance & Participation Evaluation: Regular attendance and active participation are required for success in this course. Students who are absent for more than 1 class will have 10 points deducted from their Class Participation and Attendance grade for each subsequent absence. Assignments submitted late without prior approval of the instructor will be lowered 5 points for each week the assignment is late. If you are absent more than two

classes, I will no longer accept any of your work. Two tardies (including returning late from a break or leaving early) will count as an absence. Grades are calculated on a point system with a total of 200 possible points. Assignments & Grading Assignments 100 points

B/CR = 179-160 points F/NCR = 117 points or less C/CR = 159-139 points

Please turn off your cell phones BEFORE you enter the classroom.
Do not interrupt the class by walking out to make a call, get a snack, etc.
No food allowed in the classroom.
Come to class prepared and have the necessary supplies.

Who Are You? Presentation (AKA: Past, Present & Future Reflection Folder)

Objective: Share information about yourself with your instructor/counselor, Peer Advisor(s) and
classmates. Share information about your past history, present activities and future plans.
Material:
File folders (will be provided by the instructor)
Pictures (actual photographs, drawings, and/or clip arts from the internet or magazines)
Markers, crayons, color pencils/pens, and other material as necessary
Instruction:
Work individually or in groups (some class time will be given to work on this assignment,
but majority of work will be done individually outside of the classroom on your own time)
Provide a creative visual of yourself (past, present and future) on each panel of the file
folder (see example below)
Be creative when working on this assignment
Presentation/Grading
3-5 minute show and tell (individually)
Grade will be based on creativity, design, attention to theme, time and effort on this
assignment

During the summer session, you will experience many exciting activities through the Summer
Bridge Program. You will have many opportunities to:
Meet your Professors and Counselors/Educational Advisors (Community Class,
Counseling Class, English or Math Class and/or individual appointments)
Know your Bridge Staff, Peer Advisor and Supplemental Instructors (SI)
Attend your Study Sessions (Study Jams)
Explore Mt. SAC’s Campus and discover important resources
Listen and learn from our guest speakers
Make and meet new friends
Participate in the Bridge Program Talent Show
You will need to remember and capture your experience. At the end of the term, your group and
you will share your “TRANSFORMATION” experience with your classmates.
Instruction:
Work in groups of 2 to 3 students
Provide a creative visual (you decide how you would like to present to your audience)
8 to 10 minutes presentation (all group members must be present)
All members will need to participate in the presentation
Most importantly, be creative and have fun!
