Sydney Gardens - early works schedule July 2015
Specification for landscaping works in Sydney Gardens 2015
Outlined below is a programme of works for Sydney Gardens, Bath
which forms part of phase 1 of the rejuvenation of the gardens.
The work includes the pruning, thinning and removal of vegetation;
and landscaping works to create new planting borders.
Works will be undertaken from July-December 2015.
The works include a number of actions throughout the gardens and
details have been grouped into separate areas. For each area, an
overview of the aims of the works is provided along with a map of
locations and details of the works required.

A. SE Entrance area.
Retain and enhance the existing role and character. Improve the
visitor welcome

B. Central ‘ride’.
Retain the character as a principle axis and promenade. Improve
axial views through management of edge vegetation.

1. Trim all overhanging vegetation
back at least to the edge of the
tarmac path. Crown lift
overhanging trees to 3m in height.

2 Remove laurel bushes to 5m either
side of entrance gate to the
Holborne gardens. Prune all other
vegetation to 1m in height. Retain
box tree.
On the Holborne side of the wall,
remove laurels and Prunus
lusitanica shrubs growing along the
wall which is shared with the
council compound (c. 13m along
to the south of entrance) as far as
the Cornus mas shrub (retain
Cornus mas).

C. Southern ‘room’, entrance from Sydney Place.
Shorter-term measures will retain as a distinct ‘room’ with clear
boundaries, but improve visibility and welcome of the Sydney Place
entrance and its links into the gardens.

Retain as a defined ‘room’, but reduce some vegetation to allow
glimpsed views to The Temple and beyond.

Retain character as a distinct ‘room’ and reinforce use as a social
space.

and coppicing of shrubs to reveal

improve structure. Retain better
individual specimens that have
distinct trunk. Prune around small
tree behind temple to improve
visibility and conduct formative
pruning if needed.

4. Retain overhead vegetation over
walkway around the temple as far
as Silver birch on left of path. From
Silver birch, reduce shrub height to
1m x 2 m to open up views and
allow sunlight.
Along the holly walk, remove all self-
seeded trees and shrubs (sycamore)
and secondary growth. Cut all holly
to 0.5m stumps.
Remove dead Philadelphus in lawn
directly opposite play area and re-
turf.

L. Upper open ‘room’.
Retain and reinforce as open space and encourage use as informal
social space or arts exhibition area. Improvements to the visibility
and accessibility of canal path gateway.

2. Remove weedy and overgrown
growth 2m in bed either side of
access pathway to canal to reveal
entrance and create new areas for
planting. Trim back Ruscus growing
either side of entrance away from
path. To left of gate, remove
Euonymus; retain box but conduct
formative pruning. Remove ivy to 2m
from entrance.
To right side, remove sycamore and
fallen bough of adjacent shrub;
remove clematis etc and create 2m
bed ready for planting. Remove ivy
to 2m from entrance.
In new bed, rotorvate/dig over area
and incorporate compost/well-
rotted manure/leaf mould. Rake
and till soil to a fine tilth in
preparation for planting.

formative pruning/removal of any
dead material/poor specimens.

M. Upper northern ‘room’.
Landscape improvements to discourage opportunities for anti-social
behaviour and encourage increased public use with good views of
railway and north to hillsides beyond.

side of bed. Create new bed
along wall measuring 11m x 3
from removed Prunus to self-
seeded wild cherry.

soil to a fine tilth.
Remove all ivy from park side of
wall
