Skills and Knowledge

Awareness of diverse & global range on design cultures & languages

I feel my knowledge of diverse design cultures is currently increasing over the years. As I designer I feel that I will constantly will be coming across diverse culture therefore my knowledge will expand throughout my career. On a daily basis I interact with di�erent cultures from communicating with peers to media in�uences. I feel that I could extend my awareness by researching further in culture and languages.

Experience of design research, analysis & synthesis

A module in my �rst year at university, I was asked to design a home using an architect as an inspiration. I chose Herzog de Meuron, as my architect, I analysed this work ethics, what his morals and discipline are, and was inspired to use the same principles but to come up with something new. I feel that I am con�dent in researching, analysing and synthesis and tend to expend and improve my skill more throughout my career

Visualising prototyping skills and aptitudes in a range of media formats

Throughout my time at university I have been constantly developing my visual skills. I am not con�dent with my ability to hand drawn ideas, as they don’t come across the way I visualise the idea in my head. I tend to use 3d mod-elling software’s such as sketch-up to make my idea come across clear. During the year I intend to improve on my drawing skills to learn new technique that will help increase my con�dence and improve on my drawing skills

Aptitude in compiling interim and summative design presentations

Throughout the years at university we have regular feedback sections during the projects we undertake, from di�erent tutors and peer groups. As I am a perfectionist I tend to take on the feedback but spend a lot of time on the small minor this that sometime lose track of the main idea and do not leave enough time to spend on putting together my presentation to my full ability. Also my weakness lies in presenting to an audience, I become nervous and start to mumble and talk fast to make the presentation �nish quicker. In the future projects I plan to leave plenty of time to put together a summarise design presentation and practice my presenting skills with peers to build up my con�dence.

Aptitude for designing through a digital platform

Designing through a digital platform is my strongest area, using 3D modelling packages such as sketch-up and currently started to use 3D Max. I also use Photoshop to create my design presentation boards, but I am now currently stared to use illustrator as it easier to create boards and layout presentations. I watch YouTube tutorials to help improve my skills and learn new techniques that are relevant to make my design more realistic. I intend to carry on watching the tutorials and learn of my peers. Experience of process, component and production technology

At university I have undertook various projects that were intended to learn about the process of materials from where they are from, to the manufacturing process. One in particular module I had to show the construction of the material and how the design was assembled on the site. I still need to develop my knowledge even further by reading and researching in more depth on process, components and production of technology.

Project Process

Experience of design process and methodologies

By doing various projects at university I have had a lot of experience of design processes and methodologies. I tend to follow the processes on each project to help me stage what areas need to complete. I need to stick to the stages as I start o� following the process and drift away from it and end up doing the stages last minute. In the future I intend to keep to the process so I have a set of stages that I follow each time to get the best result out of the project.

Experience of team leadership and management

Taking part in various group projects throughout university and life so far, I haven’t yet been appointed a leader in my group projects so far. In past experience the leaders, I have come across don’t seem to have good leadership so I tend to assist the leader by helping them get back onto track and advise them. In the future I would like to appoint myself as a team leader to see if I could expand and experience leadership skills.

Experience of costing projects

In my foundation year at university I undertook one project that looked over the procurement side of design but it was very brief, so my experience is very limited. With my �nal major project coming up soon I shall keep in mind cost of materials, furniture, and other factures that are necessary. This will make project be more realistic preparing myself to the real world. Experience of planning and managing project activity

With every project I plan, I schedule out a gant chart that helps me plot out the various tasks that I need to accom-plish into weekly blocks. I try to stick to the schedule but sometimes under estimate the time some things tend to take. In future I should try to stick the deadlines and make the plan more realistic to complete.

Experience of managing client relationships and collaboration

I have no experience of managing real client relationships but at university I feel that the tutors are our client. I feel that I am prepared to managing a good client relationship with the clients and listen to their needs. In my major project I intend to �nd a real client so before I go in the real world I have experience of how to handle and manage client relations.

Experience of a wide range of project types & scales of innovation

Throughout university I have undertook various ranges of projects that have looked into di�erent types of interior design. From designing a space that in�uences our mood to designing a set for a cookery show. I feel that my port-folio will have a range of di�erent project types and scales of innovation.

Enterprise and Marketing

Knowledge of design sectors & creative industries

My knowledge of the design sectors & creative industries is adequate, I have a brief in site into the area but I tend to research into the �eld to help me take my direction I would like to take in the future.

Experience of project procurement & client consultation

My experience of project procurement & client consultation is basic. In my �nal year of university we have a mock live project that involved the museum sta� to be our clients. This project has given me an insight on client consul-tation presenting the �nal design proposal.

Experience in planning continuing professional development

In the past few years the course as given me experience in planning continuing professional development. Due to modules at university like professional development it has prepared myself and made myself an identity ready for the real world.

Experience and understanding of legislation & regulations

We have had a module on legislation and regulations and brie�y looked into them. More research is required into the �eld and I feel that in my �nal major project I will come across and will have to look into more detail into legisla-tion and regulations

Experience of design budgets & account management

I have no experience in design budgets and account management. I will have to read more into the processes that are needed and how to manage budgets. Maybe even look into examples of costing tables and ask architects how the process works.

Experience of design practice marketing and promotion

This year at university due to the module personal development framework I have recently started to practice marketing and promotion. I have set up a blog to help self-promote myself and that when I apply for jobs I can refer to the blog so they can interact and engage with my blog, seeing my portfolio and c.v.

Values and Visions

Understanding and practice of ethnical business standards

I have a basic knowledge of understanding and practice of ethnical business standards. I feel that I need to look into this area in more depth so I am aware of the standards.

Subscription to policies and standard of ethnical design

I am aware of subscription to policies and standard of ethnical design. In second year of degree we were assigned a project to see what materials are suitable for the concept and knowing the properties and seeing which on is suitable.

Commitment to and understanding of the imperatives of professional practice

This is an area that I need to judge myself by making myself current in the market. I believe I know my own strengths and weaknesses and by doing a swot analysis every 3 months I can see if I have improved in areas that I’m not that good in.

Awareness & Appreciation of key design futures & innovation trends

I tend to follow latest trends by reading articles on the internet and I have a monthly subscription of grand design magazine that help to keep on top of the trends.

Commitment to the advancement of design knowledge, expertise and value

I am committed to advance my design knowledge by getting expert advice from architects and designs I know in the industry and also from my peers and tutors. Taking on the advice I will become a better designer.

Awareness & Practice of user centred design I am aware of user centred design and made me aware of user centred needs. I will experience this more in my �nal major project as I will have a set user designed task to do.
