Yard Sale to benefi t Drew Bennett set for Aug. 21

About Drew Bennett:Drew Bennett of Roanoke is 7 years old and has Pseudo-Obstruction, a

total colonic motility disorder. Bennett’s disorder was discovered when he was only two years. He has undergone many surgeries and is currently on full TPN and Lipids 20 hours a day and has early signs of liver disease.

In 2009 he was added to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) for Active Level 1 transplant. Bennett is in need of a stomach, small and large intestine, and liver transplants, costing about $4 million.

Bennett has an older sister, Sam, a brother, Alex, and younger sister Caity. He is the son of Doug and Christy Bennett.

Due to the astronomical fi nancial costs of Drew’s care — including the future stomach, small and large bowel transplant, and possible liver transplant — his family has partnered with a tax-deductible non-profi t foundation. Anyone who can donate on Drew’s behalf, please do so at the MJC&A Foundation and indicate that your contribution is for Drew Bennett.

Roanoke County lifts ban on campfi res

The Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Offi ce has lifted the campfi re burning ban issued last month, but the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality’s (VDEQ) regional burning ban on open air burning remains in effect until October 1. A campfi re should be contained to a 2-foot by 2-foot by 2-foot area; this can be in ground, on ground, or in a free-standing pre-manufactured fi replace.

The recent rainfall received over the past week has improved the dry conditions in the County that previously worried fi re offi cials causing a burning ban on campfi res to be issued on July 6, 2010. The campfi re ban was in addition to the previously issued VDEQ ban on all open air burning in place until October 1.

Several years ago, the VDEQ established the Western Virginia Emissions Control Area, which includes Roanoke County and town of Vinton, Botetourt County, Frederick County, Roanoke City, Salem City and Winchester City. Each year burning is prohibited in the Western Virginia Emissions Control Areas during the months of May, June, July, August and September. Campfi res have been the only exception to the burning restriction.

Throughout the year, the Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Offi ce regulates all open burning and ensures County compliance with state agency burning regulations by requiring a permit for anyone in Roanoke County requesting to burn. Campfi res are exempt from the burn permit process.

Patina opens at West Village

A Roanoke County bridal and formal wear shop debuted at its new location.

Patina Bridal and Formal Wear closed its Electric Road store several months ago, and since then, it has been remodeling a 5,000-square-foot space at Keagy Village in Southwest Roanoke County.

Owner Bonnie Jackson said Thursday, Aug. 5, that she aimed to open the store Friday, Aug. 6. PC Land purchased Patina’s former bank-owned Electric Road building several months ago.

Patina’s hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Patina joins Dunkin Donuts, Firehouse Subs, Ntelos and Scottrade at the mostly unoccupied Keagy Village. This center at the corner of Keagy Road and Virginia 419 houses 52,000 square feet of retail space, but developer Kahn Development Co. has been unable to land a large anchor retailer there.

Kenya they learned Kiswahili and Jones also learned the language of the tribe she stayed with, Kiluhya.

“The people are amazing. You walk into someone’s house that you don’t know because it’s raining and they are like, ‘Let me get you some chai.’ They are so welcoming. Even if people are rich and some were poor, everyone was giving and I think that’s something we’ve lost in America.”

“I want people to know that there is no one that is primitive. The people there are just like the people here.”

And Jones said that one of the most powerful things someone in Kenya told her was that, “We are different colors, but if you cut my wrist or cut your wrist, we both bleed red.”

Some of the most memorable things that Jones experienced while in Kenya included building a house, and participating in two goat slaughters, an important welcoming celebration where everyone drinks the blood of the goat.

“Their goats and cattle are everything to them, so for them to spare one, is a big deal,” she said.

She also had the opportunity to go out on a safari, where she put her photography skills to work and even got to experience a kill by lions.

news

Julienne Jones, a 5th-year student at James Madison University and 2006 graduate of Cave Spring High School recently traveled halfway around the world and got a lot more than she bargained for: A second family.

Jones is a psychology, media arts and design major and theater minor, but it was after she took a cultural anthropology class that she learned of a home stay in Kenya. Although she had traveled some during her lifetime, she’d never been without her family.

“What intrigued me most was this was the only one I’d heard of that was a home stay. My mom and I are close and I knew if I went with school fi rst, it would be easier,” Jones said.

From May 31 until Aug. 2, Jones lived in Kenya and participated in two home stays. During her time there Jones researched the markets and stayed in the Western Province,

Eregi for an internship.“I got really close to my family.

They were my mom and dad. I spent six weeks with them,” she said. “You never become part of the town because you’re the only white person there, but I think I became part of the town as much as I could.”

Jones enjoyed meeting all of the children in the community she lived in with her Mama and Baba Julia (Mama Francis and Baba Janet). And now that she is back in the states she misses them more than anything.

“I want to go back and bring all of my friends there,” Jones said, including her mom, Cami.

“It’s like breathing in Kenya,” Jones said about the markets.” Money there is very new. They have wealth in their lands and crops. That was the hardest thing there, was this precedence that I’m white and rich.”

Fifteen other JMU students were involved in the core program. During their time in

Parks and Rec special events and programs

Are the end-of-summer doldrums getting you down? Roanoke County Parks has a variety of programs and special events to keep you busy as fall approaches.

Mark your calendar for a night of Shakespeare under the stars as we continue our Summer Stock Dinner Theater series at Valhalla Vinyard on August 21. Celebrate Grandpar-ents Day with us September 21 at Tanglewood Mall from 1pm to 6pm. We’re having a Sock Hop to celebrate decades gone by, with music, dancing, food and more.

Haven’t been to Splash Valley yet? You have one more month to enjoy the area’s most excit-ing aquatics attraction. New this week, purchase a Weekday Fun Pass and save money off your admissions. Don’t forget to look for our new program guide at the end of August. Fall program registration begins on Tuesday, September 7. There are still many summer session

programs still available for registration., such as:

A Day at Cave Mountain Lake - August 10

Cave Mountain Lake, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Natural Bridge, has wel-comed generations of families. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the 7-acre lake in the 1930s using existing buttresses of natural rock to form a 35 foot high dam. The CCC also built the log picnic shelter using trees and rocks from the area. Enjoy a relaxing day on the sandy beach, swim in the lake or enjoy one of the many easy walking trails. A highlight of the day is a Cookout with all the fi xins. Fee includes picnic lunch, escorts and bus transportation. Go to Online Registration or call 772-PLAY.

Drawing - Beginning Au-gust 18

As an end in itself or for laying the base for all painting in any media, drawing is the es-sential fi rst step. You will learn to look at an object in a new way and really see what you are seeing. Shapes, shading,

lighting, picture composition, contour drawing, gesture draw-ing and one and two point per-spectives will be covered in this six week program. Go to Online Registration or call 772-PLAY.

Tennis Lessons for Adults - New Sessions Weekly

Roanoke County is pleased to offer a series of tennis lessons for beginner level adult play-ers. Registration fee includes instruction from current and former college coaches and players on the basics of the tennis stroke as well as specifi c drills aimed to improve each individuals game. Registration is limited to allow for adequate court time and personalized instruction for all participants. Go to Online Registration or call 772-PLAY.

Roanoke County Parks, Rec-reation & Tourism is operated by the government of Roanoke County. While our mission is to fi rst serve Roanoke County citizens, recreation programs are open to everyone! Check our website often for updates, or call 772-PLAY with questions about programs or registration.

Cave Spring Marching Knights truck. — Emily Flora, SWoCo

CSHS Band receives new band truck and trailerLast year prior to the Vinton

Christmas parade the Cave Spring High School Marching band’s truck and trailer caught on fi re. Lucky for those marching Knights, their band equipment was not inside the trailer when it caught fi re.

This year, the band will have a new shiny truck and trailer to haul their instruments and equipment with.

Thanks goes out to the Band Boosters who purchased the truck and trailer and worked with Proline, Woody Graphics, and Shelor to make this possible.

“We are very pleased,” band director Brian Quakenbush said.

Applebee’s hosts Pancake Breakfast benefi t for Pack the Bus

Q99 Radio (99.1FM) and Applebee’s Restaurant joined forces to support and kick off the community service project, “Pack the Bus.”

The Applebee’s Restaurant at Tanglewood Mall participated, and we have photos of some of those who came out to the event. The money collected at the Tanglewood location will go to the school district(s) closest to the respective Applebee’s.

“Pack the Bus” ends Aug. 13 and includes 14 appearances at local WalMarts. During the past 11 years the project has collected more than $400,000 in school supplies.

om Elizabeth Klussman frHidden Valley has recently been selected to compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase South (QDSS) at

Winthrop University in Rock Hill South Carolina, September 3 and 4. The QDSS, now in its 4th season! The QDSS is part of the Queen of Diamond’s Showcases which are the largest fastpitch softball showcases of its kind in the U.S.

This event continues to attract athletes from 30+ states and 2 Canadian Provinces. Its’ sister showcase, the Queen of Diamonds North, in its 17th season, is the largest

showcase in the nation. Both events have over 2,000 applicants in which 264 are selected. This showcase is very unique as athletes actually ‘apply to’ this event individually and are selected based on many criteria ranging from ability, potential, academics, graduation year, coaches requests and referrals. Elizabeth Klussman plays Short Stop. Elizabeth plays summer ball for the Virginia Extreme Force 18u Showcase team.

Springing back Summer’s almost gone, but we can’t let it pass without at least one look back on

the spring. Speaking of which, if you still have photos from games this spring, we’d still be happy to help you show them off. You can share at [email protected].

Two people from Southwest Roanoke County are appearing in the latest production at Studio Roanoke in downtown Roanoke.

They are Caitlin Morgan and Graham Grasty. The show, “Up from the Lunar Surface,” opened Tuesday and

runs through August 22. It is described as “a surreal comedy.” For showtimes and ticket prices, see studioroanoke.org.

Top tomatoLinda Holt sent us this photo of a very large tomato she grew in her garden this year. “It is the biggest one I have ever grown. This one is called a “Delicious.” It was not a real pretty tomato on top, but as you can see was almost the size of a paper plate.”

Do you have interesting things from your garden this year? You can share photos at [email protected].

Delta Dental deer As I drove along Starkey Road one recent afternoon, I was startled to drive by a fawn grazing on its

spindly legs, right near Delta Dental. I turned around at The Forum, hoping it would still be there and that I wouldn’t see it running out into traffi c.

I was able to pull into the lot with Starkey Medical’s practice and watch across the street as it fi nished its snack and retreated to the cool of the woods.

For weeks, my family and I have been watching what we call the “Delta Dental deer” grazing on the knoll near that offi ce. A pair, including a buck with quite a nice little rack, have been traveling across the road in the early evening and spending time grazing there. Perhaps this is their little one.

Kevin Jones Performing Arts StudioThe Southwest Roanoke County-based Kevin Jones Performing Arts Studio held a series of summer camps this summer at Faith Christian School.

Her are some photos from the high school camp, where campers rehearsed and performed songs from the musical “Wicked,” along with various scenes.
