Heavenly in every way.For anyone setting their sights high, the choice is easy: no other country

has winter sports destinations closer to the skies than Switzerland. The

average altitude of our resorts is the highest in Europe – and that goes

for our ski areas too. Which means the ultimate in snow-sure skiing, and

pistes that go on for ever. Which resort holds

the record? Zermatt, with its 17-km descent

from the Klein Matterhorn.

Where school is always fun.First steps need not be difficult – at least for those who discover the

joys of gliding on snow with the help of our 13,000 qualified snow sports

instructors. Throughout the country, 180 snow sports schools ensure

that young novices at the Swiss Snow Kids Villages grow into confident

and skilful snow sports fans, and that keen

practitioners develop their own unmistakable

Heaven on earth.Switzerland’s most appealing wellness attraction is nature itself.

Yet nature is also the backdrop for our seductive wellness hotels and

spas, where our guests feel not just at home, but in seventh heaven.

Suddenly day-to-day cares seem far away, and the good things in life

close at hand: gentle relaxation, the natural way,

in soothing thermal water under an open winter

sky, surrounded by snowy mountain peaks.

Where Switzerland is at home. Swissness at its very best: some 250 hotels and guest houses guarantee

a thoroughly Swiss experience, from their architecture through to their

cuisine. Each property carrying the “Typically Swiss” quality label, whether

a cosy Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) hut high in the mountains or a historic

luxury hotel down in the valley, promises an

unforget table holiday. Every one is different,

but all have one thing in common: each, in its

own way, is typically Swiss.

Pleasure at the highest level.A delicious cheese platter with friends at a rustic mountain inn. A plate

of Rösti and a glass of Petite Arvine in a ski hut. A slice of homemade

cake and a cosy place to warm up during a snowy day on the pistes.

Sometimes it doesn’t take much to find true happiness. And you need

look no further than one of the many charming

Swiss mountain huts, which promise those

moments of welcome and conviviality that

make a holiday in Switzerland such a pleasure.

Closer to nature. There is another, gentler way of exploring the snowy landscape: under

your own steam. Thousands of kilometres of cleared winter walking paths,

marked snowshoeing trails and perfectly prepared cross-country ski trails

offer a tranquil alternative to cruising the pistes. For anyone seeking active

relaxation and a more intimate relationship

with nature, there is no better way of enjoying

Switzerland’s magical winter wonderland.

Fun on runners. It is the longest toboggan run in Europe: 15 km from top to bottom, with a

vertical drop of 1,631 m. Starting on the Faulhorn and winding all the way

down to Grindelwald, “Big Pintenfritz” is only one of more than 150 tobog-

gan runs throughout Switzerland. Some are short and gentle, others offer

a big vertical drop and even bigger thrills;

all, however, offer a unique and wonderfully

addictive variety of wintry fun.

Attractions for every taste. From the World Cup downhill on the Lauberhorn to Chalandamarz, the

Engadin tradition of driving out winter – and from Lucerne’s carnival to

Christmas markets in the unspoilt Val d’Anniviers in the Valais – the Swiss

winter is packed with age-old customs, sporting thrills and cultural treats.

Some are charming local events, such as the

New Year Silvesterkläuse in Appenzell; others

are world-class, like the White Turf horse races

on frozen Lake St. Moritz.

A winner by nature.Graubünden tops the league: 2,200 km of piste, 1,800 km of cross-country

ski trails and 60 toboggan runs make this canton, the home of Olympic gold

medallists Carlo Janka and Dario Cologna, the sportiest in Switzerland.

It is also the country’s number-one holiday region: from chic St. Moritz to

family-friendly Savognin, 45 resorts pride themselves on their hospitality,

gastronomy, the reliability of their snow – and, here in the land of the ibex,

their unspoilt nature.

the world has such a dense public transport network. Swiss Federal Railways

to the holiday regions. Trains run at regular intervals: they always depart and

arrive at the same minute past the hour/half hour.

Our scenic routes.

The journey is the goal on the scenic

routes of the Swiss Travel System.

You wish the journey would last for-

ever, as you marvel at the changing

scenery from the comfort of your

seat. One moment you’re gliding

past the white expanse of a frozen

lake; the next, hurtling through a

tunnel to emerge into forest, before

crossing a high bridge over a wild

river, mountains towering on either

side. All of the following scenic routes

share one feature: each reveals the

changes as you travel from one re-

gion, one culture, to another, with

rich contrasts in landscape, colours

and climate.

A journey on one of the scenic routes

is an unforgettable experience in win-

ter too. The following are all open in

winter, some with a reduced timetable:

Glacier Express: From the Top of

the World to the Matterhorn.

Bernina Express: Over 196 bridges

from north to south.

GoldenPass Line: In the golden

train from Montreux to Lucerne.

Wilhelm Tell Express: From

Lucerne to Ticino in style.

Palm Express: From St. Moritz into

Ticino by Alpine Postbus.

Pre-Alpine Express: By train from

Lake Lucerne to Lake Constance.

RegioExpress Lötschberger: A way with a view, to the Valais.

Travel luggage-free. Send your bags ahead – the easy wayWhen you check in for your flight to

Switzerland, you can send your lug-

gage directly to the railway station at

your ski resort. This highly practical

scheme is called Fly Rail Baggage,

and works for all airlines from every

international airport in the world to

all larger railway stations. For your

homeward flight you can even check

your luggage in at the resort’s sta-

tion and collect your boarding card

(with your chosen seat number): your

bags then travel by train directly to

the aircraft. You can get the nec-

essary documents for Fly Rail Bag-

gage and checking-in from your local

Swiss Travel System sales point or

from larger Swiss stations.

www.rail.ch/baggage

Luggage transport in SwitzerlandWhen travelling within Switzerland,

ask for the “Fast Baggage” service

if you require your luggage the same

day at your destination. Drop your

bags off before 9 am, and they will

arrive no later than 6 pm. This serv-

ice is particularly useful if you want

to travel without worrying about your

bags – for example, on one of the

scenic routes, such as the Golden-

Pass Line from Lucerne to Montreux.

Travel the Swiss Way.This is how it feels to travel the Swiss way:

There is a train, whenever you need one, already at the airport. A bus to take you farther, or

another train. And a boat, if you wish to enjoy the beauty of one of the lakes. Or a little red train

to bring you up to the mountains. A whole system of it, working like a Swiss watch. And so many

places to see, in that beautiful little country.

That’s the Swiss Travel System: To have it all, with one pass, the Swiss Pass. Valid even on trams

and buses in the cities, and also for the entrance to most of Switzerland’s museums.
