In more recent history, Switzerland has opened up to its European neighbours and is now an active member of the United Nations. Switzerland is active in many inter-national organisations, but retains a strong commitment to neutrality.

EconomySwitzerland is a prosperous and stable mod-ern market economy with low unemploy-ment, a highly skilled labour force and a per capita GDP (gross domestic product) larger than that of the big western European econ-omies.

HistorySwitzerland’s history has been greatly influ-enced by its geography, which divides the country into small regions. These regions were independent until 1848 when the country became a confederation. Since this time the number of regions joining the con-federation has grown to a total of 26 that now make up the country of Switzerland.
