Do NowDescribe your ideal place to live.

Where is this place located (city, state, country, continent)?

Why do you want to live there?

What is the weather like there?

What kinds of physical and human characteristics exist in this place?

Page 5: SWBAT analyze world population patterns (distribution and density.)

BIG IDEA

Humans are not evenly distributed across the Earth.

(There are two ways to examine pop. patterns – distribution and density.)

Page 6: SWBAT analyze world population patterns (distribution and density.)

Distribution – where are people living?

This cartogram depicts the size of countries according to population rather than size

Page 7: SWBAT analyze world population patterns (distribution and density.)

Do Now:Answer the following question in a solid paragraph in your notebook:

What makes a location a good place to live?Refer to physical (bodies of water, land forms, etc.) and human characteristics (cultural traditions and things humans made) as much as possible.

Stockholm, Sweden was voted the nicest city to live in (2009)

Agenda:1. Catch-up lesson:

Where people live and why

2. Q & A Review

3. Quest on Population

4. OT/start on homework

Where do people live? The places people live are called ecumene regions, or places permanently inhabited by humans.

Why? People tend to live

Near water (oceans, rivers and lakes) In temperate climates

Page 10: SWBAT analyze world population patterns (distribution and density.)

Ecumene Regions

Key Facts about the Ecumene:

Most of the world lives near the middle of earth – between the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn

China is the most populous country

Africa is the fastest growing continent

¾ of the world lives on less that 5% of the earth’s surface

Page 11: SWBAT analyze world population patterns (distribution and density.)

Where do people avoid?

The places people do not live are called nonecumene regions, or places not inhabited by humans.

Why? People don’t want to live where it’s: Too dry Too wet Too cold Too high

Page 12: SWBAT analyze world population patterns (distribution and density.)

Nonecumene Regions

Antarctica

Sahara Desert

Australian Outback

Far north of Arctic Circle

Density – how close are people living to each other?

Population density is the number of people divided by the total land area.

Page 14: SWBAT analyze world population patterns (distribution and density.)

Three Types of Population Density

Arithmetic – total number of people divided by total land area(also called population density)

Physiological – number of people supported by unit of land suited for agriculture (arable land)

Agricultural - number of farmers per area of arable land

Page 15: SWBAT analyze world population patterns (distribution and density.)

Calculating Population Density (also called arithmetic density)

Number of peoplePopulation density =___________________

Land area (sq. miles)

For the United States…

300 million people___________________ = 82 people/sq. mi. 3.7 million sq. miles
