MAKING HISTORYTHE SWAROVSKI STORY IS ONE OF INNOVATION,INSPIRATION, AND DEDICATION – TRAVELLING FROMA GLORIOUS PAST TO A DAZZLING FUTURE

For more than 113 years there has beenone name that has been consistently andinextricably linked to precision cut crystaland fashion. The founder of the company,Daniel Swarovski I, was born in 1862 inNorthern Bohemia, which happened to bethe centre of a flourishing crystal andcostume jewellery industry. In such a settingit’s perhaps unsurprising that Daniel wasfascinated with the colourful brilliance offaceted stones from his earliest years. Moreover, as a young man he showed anaptitude for invention and entrepreneurshipthat was to form the basis of what today isa family company employing more than20,000 and with a presence in more than120 countries.

In 1895 Daniel Swarovski moved to Wattens in Austria where he could generate his own electricity from alpine streams and keep the secrets of his inventions safe. He went into business at a time when the arts, literature, music and science were cross-pollinating right across Central Europe;surrounded by the inspiration of Mitteleuropaand all that it represented, the company wassteeped in culture, innovation and creativityfrom the outset.

Shining Values

During the opening decades of the 20th century,Swarovski crystals became an essentialingredient in the heady world of high fashion. The company worked with iconic figures likeChanel, Schiaparelli, Balenciaga and later,Christian Dior. The glittering, light filled crystalswere irresistible to artists like jazz singerJosephine Baker, then to Hollywood icons likeMarlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn.

The success of the company today isdirectly related to the fact that the fourth andfifth generation family management still respectthe principles of the Daniel Swarovski I:excellence in business practice and productquality, constant innovation, a desire to createproducts of great beauty, and the observance ofmeaningful humanistic values in all its dealingswith its employees, business partners, thecommunity and the environment.

BYDESIGN

How would you describeyour style?

Beautifully craftedusing quality materials– this is reallyimportant to me. I likejewellery that isdefinitely different, sothe wearer stands out,but that is still as easyto wear in the day as inthe evening. I enjoywearing pieces inunexpected ways, suchas using a necklace asa bracelet or belt. Mylove of colour shadingand combining, as wellas of symmetry, isapparent in a lot of mywork. Oh, and I also gooff-the-wall crazy forsome pieces!

How did your career get started?

I have always had alove and understandingfor arts and crafts –since my childhood, really. I grew up aspart of a highly creativefamily, surrounded byjewellery andembroidery. I studieddesign-based subjectsto degree level, then

enhanced these skillsfurther by learningmore aboutembroidery, weavingand wire work whiletravelling to South Eastand Far East Asia. Thisenabled me to acquiretechniques from highlygifted and skilledcraftspeople – whichled me to create myown range of jewelleryand accessories.

please you into yourown unique piece. Australian-born Claire Aristides(www.clairearistides.com) is one of the mostexciting and inspirational jewellery designersworking in the UK today. Her fresh, timelesspieces have featured on national TV as wellas in countless magazines, and herimmensely popular jewellery workshopsalways receive rave reviews.

How did yourcareer getstarted?

I’ve been fascinated byjewellery since I wasvery little. I’mAustralian, but wetravelled a lot as afamily, because of myfather’s job. Mymother had a fabulousleather vanity casethat came with hereverywhere we went, and it was crammedwith necklaces, bracelets and earrings

that she’d picked up inTurkey, Spain andGreece, along withstunning gold piecesfeaturing intriguingChinese characters, from Asia. This was inthe 70s, so it was atime of extremelyflamboyant, colourfulfashion, and shecertainly embraced thestyle! I used to loveplaying with thecontents of that vanitycase, and discoveringhow differentlybeautiful all the itemsin it were. Eventually, Istarted messingaround with beads andchains and making myown jewellery. It was

quite a long journeyfor me – I’ve neverhad any formaltraining – but when Imoved to the UK I feltI was ready to set upa website and startsharing my designs.

How would youdescribe yourstyle?

I’m a person wholoves colour; I adoreworking with all kindsof shades, both subtleand vivid. I mostlycreate with chains, beads and crystals –and I’ve been doing alot more work withwire recently, too. I liketo think that I ambringing out the best

in the stones, whichare often extremelybeautiful to start with!

What do youlove aboutCRYSTALLIZED™– SwarovskiElements?

Oh, I use them all thetime! They’re justbeautiful, and thechoice of colour isamazing. In fact, I’d goso far as to say thatthey’re a necessity forme. The 4mm biconein gold, for example, will lighten andbrighten any project.Single, large elements, such as cupchains andpendants, are sostunning, and great for

building a designaround. I’ve alsorecently launched anew range, called Loveand Luxe, making useof huge, chunkycrystals in boldstatement colours tocreate wearable yetglamorous and stand-out pieces that look farmore expensive thanthey are!

What do youthink makes agood piece ofjewellery?

I think complementingan outfit is important. And on top of that, you can instinctivelytell when a piece hasbeen thought through

and designed withsomeone’s personality,as well as theirappearance, in mind.

What jewelleryare you wearingat the moment?

I have three rings onone finger, a braceleton the other wrist andearrings made withcrystals andfreshwater pearls. I’lloften wear somethingthroughout the day sothat I can make aproper judgement on itin the evening.

Side Cutters & Memory Wire Cutters

Side cutters are ideal for cutting wire, tiger tail, cupchains, loop-chains, and headpins. Memory-wire cutters are specially designed for cuttingsteel or any hard wires.

Tweezers

Used for any precision work, and are great foruse with small beads, findings and positioningflat-backs, as well as for creating small knots onnylon thread.

PLIABLE PLIERS

These are an essential when jewellery makingand there are various types available

Crimping Pliers

These pliers are used for applying crimp beadsand tubes, which are closed and secured withthis easy-to use tool. It makes the crimp beador tube appear round and feel smooth, gettingrid of sharp edges. The lower-position groovescrimp the beads and tubes closed with onefirm grip and the upper-position notches roundoff edges with another firm grip for aprofessional finish. Always use mediumcrimping pliers for crimp beads 2.3mm andabove, and crimp tubes from 1.8mm.

Flat-nosed Pliers

Ideal for wiring, especially formaking wider and broaderbends in wire, for making angledbends, straightening andflattening out metal,

PRACTICAL

FABULOUS FINDINGS

These findings are essential for creatingjewellery and here are the most common ones you will use

Crimp Bead/Tube

By using crimp beads, you can position pearlsor beads, anywhere on the thread. They arealso used for attaching clasps for aprofessional finish. Crimp breads vary in size, dependent on the diameter of the thread orwire. Choose either crimp beads or tubesaccording to your design and always ensureyou use pliers in the appropriate size.

Lobster-clasp

Clasps are used to attach the two ends of anecklace or bracelet and come in manydifferent shapes and sizes. A lobster clasp, is ahighly functional but still decorative clasp andis easily applied to every thread. Different claspsizes and a large range of platings ensure thatindividual designs can be finished perfectly.

Split & Jump Rings

These are essential linking elements in thecreation of jewellery, and these different sizedand plated components can be used forattaching clasps or as an alternative to them. The only difference is that split rings have twoloops – like a key-ring - and therefore offer moresecurity, although jump rings are perfect forattaching pendants.

French Wire

Perfect for creating a high-value-looking finishing by hiding the end of any thread. Itcomes in different platings to suit any designand in varying diameters for many kinds ofstringing materials.

Headpin/Eyepin

A headpin is a thin wire with a small disc at theend, available in a range of sizes. They are usedas a linking element for beads, chains or otheritems, such as earrings. And are especially usefulfor fastening components onto sieves (refer toour bling ring project) loops, or rings. An eyepinis a thin wire with a loop at one end and is usedfor linking beads and chains together. Differentplatings and sizes make these suitable to anyindividual design.
