Go on, take a peek...

Or, if you prefer...

walking, mountain biking, rockpooling, surfing, bushcrafts, building sandcastles.

We have them all in one go in this

uniquely varied part of Wales.

They’re neatly packaged too.

Within a handful of miles of Swansea

you’re tripping over Mumbles as you

enter the gorgeous Gower Peninsula.

Half an hour the other way takes you

into our wet and wild ‘Waterfall

Country’ and green, wooded valleys.

It’s surprising what you’ll find in and

around Wales’ Waterfront City.

We have proper, grown-up things for

adults to enjoy. And some of the best

beaches and attractions in the UK for

families.

And it all comes without airport hassle,

pile-’em-high package holidays and

Euro angst.

Beach Breaks

But our beaches are also great for all kinds of sandy, salty

activities on short breaks and long breaks, on spring and

autumn weekends away and splash-around summer hols

spent building sandcastles.

We have lots of those here in Wales’ surfing capital.

Top Mumbles at SunsetBottom Surfing, South Gower

If you don’t believe us, take a walkalong Rhossili beach in the far westwhere Gower runs out of land, but notsand. You’ll be walking for some time– all the way to Whitford Burrows andmore miles of beach before you’refinished.

Now take yourself to Pwll Du Bay orneighbouring Brandy Cove, tiny placeshidden away amongst cliffs on thesouth coast. You won’t believe theyshare the same peninsula asboundless, endless Rhossili.

Some people like the cosy, comfy feel of intimate, rockycoves. Others go for the big time and head for open, sandyspaces bordering on the infinite. We’re good at both(and the beaches in between little and large).

No big surprise, really.

After all, we’re Wales’Waterfront City. The waves arewithin skimming distance of theshops, there’s a big beach –and an even bigger bay – justacross the road from the park, and a snazzy marina filled withboats.

That’s just the start of it.At one side of the Bay you’llfind more bucketfuls of sand atAberavon beach. At the otherthere’s Mumbles, our swanky, stylish little sailing resort thateveryone – locals and visitors –just love. And, keeping the bestuntil last, waiting around theheadland is the beautiful GowerPeninsula, where beachy thingsare a way of life.

All beaches great and small

The surf’s been up for some time.

Surfing and Swansea Bay go back a long way.Way back to the 1960s when the locals began riding theAtlantic breakers at west facing Llangennith, the scatteredcoastal village on Gower. This is Wales’ spiritual West Coast, where California meets Cambria. You can’t move here insummer for split-screen VWs and beach-blonde surfers.Though, in the words of the legendary Pete Jones from PJ’sSurfshop, the beach is ‘so big there’s room for everyone’.

Page 6: Swansea Bay Holiday Guide 2012

Being beside the Seaside

Holidays at home are back in fashion – and about time too,we say. Swansea Bay has 50-odd beaches, bays and coves.Sandcastles and beach games, rockpools and dunes, paddling and swimming, proms and piers, beach cafés andbeach huts… we’ve got them all, in (buckets and) spades.

Nowadays, it’s not just the waves at Llangennith, Caswell Bay,Langland Bay and Aberavon that attract the surfing crowd.

Kitesurfing is also big news, especially along Rhossili and Swansea Bayand at Port Eynon, Oxwich and Aberavon. You can also go windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, waterskiing or wakeboarding… or galloping acrossthe beach on horseback. There’s even an alternative to surfing in thesea. Swansea’s LC leisure complex is awash with all kinds of aquaactivities, including Europe’s first ‘Boardrider’ indoor surf experience.

Surfing plus...

Go Gower

A few words about the Gower Peninsula. It’s gorgeous. It’s Britain’s first ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’.It’s 19 miles long with a coastline of around 35 miles, aroundthree-quarters of which is in the care of the National Trust. So it’s a safe bet to say that its natural beauty is prettyconstant. But in other ways it keeps on changing. The moody, low-lying saltmarshes and cockle beds along thenorth coast are a world away from the south’s sunny cliffsand beaches.

Page 7: Swansea Bay Holiday Guide 2012

Flagging up our awards

The mantelpiece isgroaning. No, honestly. We’re almostembarrassed to mentionthat Rhossili and PortEynon have yet again wontop beach awards (thelatter ‘Britain’s BestBeach 2011’, no less). Then we have to makespace for the Blue Flagand Seaside Awards, theGreen Coast and RuralSeaside Awards – 15 atthe last count.

Pet sounds

We’re very familyfriendly – and thatincludes your familypet. Gower inparticular is verypopular with dogowners, manybeaches allowingyear-round accessincluding Rhossili, the UK’s top dog-friendly beachaccording toThe Times.

A-list for Aberavon

Two miles ofpromenade, a wide, sandy beach andspectacular viewsacross Swansea Bayto the GowerPeninsula.

No wonder that localhero Michael Sheenloves walking herewhen he returnshome fromHollywood.

Baywatch

Swansea Bay is framed by twovery different harbours. Mumblesis Victorian-cosmopolitan, aconfection of high end boutiquesand ice cream parlours, seasidechic and retro fun. The MaritimeQuarter and SA1 Waterfront inthe historic docklands across theBay are the opposite – quiteliterally. Here you’ll find a citythat’s reacquainting itself with itsmaritime roots in a modern way –and feeling glad to be back.

2012 is a big year for walkers in Wales.

Go all the way around Gower

There will, of course, be many highlights along these 861

miles. We like to think that the 39 mile walk around the

Gower Peninsula will be up there with the best. After all,

Gower is the UK’s first ‘Area of Outstanding Natural

Beauty’, an accolade it won in 1956 on the strength of its

stunning coastline.

Some of the many places that might stop you in your tracks...

Top left Take the Coast PathLeft The Prom, Swansea Bay

Caswell BayKick off your boots andgo rockpooling.

Three Cliffs BayStop to savour the‘Michelin star views’of the beach and cliffs.

OxwichExplore the dunes andreedbeds, part of a rarecoastal nature reserve.Kate Humble reckons‘it feels like the Pacificcoastline of California’.

Rhossili take oneGo off-piste to the parttime tidal island of Worm’sHead – but check the tidetimes beforehand. Or enjoyit from the ‘shop with aview’, the biggest, mostscenic National Trust shop(and visitor centre) in Wales.

Rhossili take twoUnpack the binoculars onthe three mile beach (the‘king’ of Gower) and see ifyou can spot baskingsharks, grey seals andbottlenose dolphins. And oystercatchers, cormorants, diving gannetsand hang gliders.

LlanrhidianHere’s an unusual sight:sheep grazing on low-lyingsaltings where you’re neverquite sure where landmeets sea. They’re lappingit up, and so are we(Gower saltmarsh lamb isworld-class).

PenclawddWatch the cockle pickers –it’s a centuries old traditionin north Gower. Then bag abag, sprinkle with vinegarand pepper, and enjoy.

The Welsh Proms

These come in two parts –and are also part of the new WalesCoast Path. You won’t needwalking boots for the five-milepromenade along Swansea Bay.Or the two mile seafront walkbeside Aberavon Beach. But youwill need a camera with a wideangle lens to capture the bigbayside views.

When you travel 10 or 20miles in this part of Wales

you’ll go from beach toforest, rockpool to

We may have mentioned this before.

All ways Gower. You’ve done Gower by coast (seethe previous pages). Now it’s theturn of the Gower Way, a 35 milecross country route. It’s extremelywalker friendly – the route, split intothree bite-sized sections, iswaymarked all the way. If legend isto be believed, you’ll be following infootsteps fit for a king when you getto Arthur’s Stone, a high and mightylandmark with far reaching views.

Bussy boots. Our ‘Walking by Bus’ green initiativegets you out and about without acar by promoting short walks linkedto bus routes. Gower in particular iswell served by this popular service.

And now for somethingcompletely different.Follow in the footsteps of RichardBurton. The three mile trail in AfanForest Park, named after the greatactor takes you from his homevillage of Pontrhydyfen to Cwmafan.

Welcome to

‘Waterfall Country’You’ll find it in the Vale of Neath,

a broad valley lined with woods

and waterfalls. Walk to the

Melincwrt Falls, hidden amongst

a dense canopy of trees. Or go

to Sgw d Gwladus, set in a dark,

mossy valley that appears

almost primeval.

It’s ‘Canal Country’ too.Inland waterways are the Vale ofNeath’s other classic water feature.Take to the towpath of the NeathCanal and walk to Aberdulais withits canal basin and unique skewbridge. There’s a Swansea CanalTrail, too, starting at Clydach andrunning up the Tawe Valley.

Make for the lakes. Why aren’t more people aware ofthe tranquil Lliw Valley reservoirs, shielded by woods north ofSwansea’s City Centre? For aneasy walk follow the three mile trailaround the lower lake. You mightwell have the place all to yourself.

If you go down to the woods…And if you know where to look,Afan Forest Park will revealglimpses of its industrial heritage.

Swansea is a city that’s big in heartand more than happy enough to admit

to being on a human scale.

Wales’ Waterfront City

Page 13: Swansea Bay Holiday Guide 2012

11 visitswanseabay.com

We’re not that small. There’s nothing parochial

about our bright, breezy city. The Swans are up

there in the Premier League. We have super sports

stadia and swimming pools that are the envy

of other, bigger cities.

Our multi-purpose LC, Wales’ number one attraction, defines what 21st century leisure centres should allbe about.

On second thoughts...

We’re home to Wales’ oldestmuseum. Which happens to bejust across the road from Wales’newest museum, the exciting, interactive National WaterfrontMuseum that puts you in the drivingseat.

We’re very green as well as sandy, with over 50 parks and gardens.Four Swansea beauty spots havewon the coveted Green Flag award, the gardening ‘Oscar’ – ClyneGardens, Singleton Botanic Gardens,Victoria Park and Brynmill Park.

We’re extremely proud ofcelebrated son Dylan Thomas. But he’s not the only one. There’salso Russell T Davies, reinventor ofDr Who. And Gavin and Stacey’sJoanna Page reckons Swansea ‘justfeels warm and safe and I knowI’m home’.

We’re a waterfront city with aproper prom. And it goes on… andon, for five miles. You can walk it,bike it or take a trip on the ‘little train’along the route of the world’s firstpassenger railway.

On the way play golf, pop into thepark or splash around in the lido. And end it all with a stroll along thePromenade.

Things you might not knowabout Swansea...

Page 14: Swansea Bay Holiday Guide 2012

Dylan Thomas didn’t say that. But it sums up nicely the way in whichMumbles tops off the city experience. Think of all the things you like aboutthe seaside. Then add a dash of urban sophistication and – voila!– there you have it.

Mumbles is salty and stylish. It has a pier and a headland. There are boats, bistros and a beach, art and craft galleries and boutiques, cafés andparlours serving lip-smacking Welsh Italian ice cream.

‘Swansea without Mumblesis like an ice cream without the flake’.

of a kindDylan Thomas and Richard Burton. Chalk and chalk.

13 visitswanseabay.com

Always a handsome stronghold, it’s looking especially goodthanks to a recent facelift, which has improved public accessand given it a dazzling 30ft/10m high glass bridge which opensup parts of the castle hidden away for centuries. There are yetmore reasons to visit – the commanding views across SwanseaBay from the battlements and the historic events andre-enactments held during the summer months.

And up above, there’s a well preservedmedieval castle that goes by the lovelyname of Oystermouth.

Or, if you prefer, cheese and

cheese. They shared so many

characteristics, good and bad:

a profound love of language both

written and spoken, charisma,

volatility and personalities

massively forged by their Welsh

roots.

Burton was a huge Thomas fan(and the greatest interpreter of thepoet’s masterwork, Under MilkWood). He was born just down theroad in the village of Pontrhydyfen.Thomas is indelibly linked withSwansea. Both now share apresence in the City thanks to therecent opening of the RichardBurton Centre at Swansea

University, the permanent home ofBurton’s diaries, photographs andother memorabilia kindly donated byhis widow, Sally.

Almost every nook and cranny

of Swansea has Thomas

connections. Cwmdonkin Park,

which inspired some of his most

famous work is just down the (very

steep) hill from his Uplands house,

preserved as a Thomas time

capsule and now open to visitors.

Another Thomas treasure trove is theDylan Thomas Centre, where a uniqueexhibition celebrates the poet’s lifeand work. Each autumn, it also holdsthe Dylan Thomas Festival.

Mighty MuseumsSwansea’s National WaterfrontMuseum is guaranteed to leave abig impression, covering 300years of innovation and industryall under one roof. The way ittells the story, through hands-onand high-tech exhibits, isinnovative in itself, engaging andentertaining visitors of all ages. Its neighbour, SwanseaMuseum, is completely different.Wales’ oldest – and possiblyquirkiest – museum isendearingly old school, anAladdin’s Cave of dinosaurbones, Egyptian mummies anda Welsh kitchen.

There are lots more where these came from...

1Day In the jungle, beside the seaside

16 visitswanseabay.com

Wander down by the Waterfrontthrough snazzy SA1 and acrossthe new Sailbridge.

Take a pic – then pack a picnic.Go shopping in SwanseaMarket for fresh Gower cocklesand other local goodies.

You’re almost in Mumbles.Stop off for an ice cream(it’s compulsory), stroll aroundthe shops and a walk acrossancient Oystermouth Castle’sstriking new glass bridge.

The Gower Peninsula is justaround the headland – but thatwill have to wait for another day.

Then catch the Bay Rider ‘littletrain’ or hire a bike and cyclealong the prom (no cars allowed)to Clyne Gardens, whereSwansea’s green fingers havebeen hard at work nurturingazaleas and rhododendrons, bluebell woods and bog gardens.

Go chameleon spotting atPlantasia, the city centre tropicalforest. If they prove elusive, makedo with monkeys or piranhas.

2Day woodsand water

Afan is where mountain bikerscome for their adrenaline rush asthey whizz down ‘The Wall’ ortackle the epic Skyline Trail.

This welcoming forest also servesup gentle trails, family cyclingroutes, horse riding and walking.

There’s fishing too, at thepicturesque Glyncorrwg Pondsor hop over to Lliw Valley forbreathtaking lakeside views. 17 visitswanseabay.com

For past times a little closer tohome round off the day with a visitto the Family History Centre atSwansea’s Civic Centre.

3Day making apast time of it

Time to head for the hills. And into the woods.Afan Forest Park is big, verygreen, very long and a very steepsided vale.

Then go valley hopping again tothe Vale of Neath; like the AfanForest Park, it’s a place wherethe influences of man and natureare in balance.

You’ll see it in the scenery and atGnoll Country Park, wherefancy cascades tumble throughlandscaped grounds.

You’ve already ticked offOystermouth Castle. But there are still quite a fewmore to go.

Take yourself off to Gower andOxwich Castle, which starredon the 16th century propertymarket as a ‘des res’ trophyhome with the latest must-havemock-military features.

En route to the next, stop byArthur’s Stone, for a 360degree view around Gower.

Wales Coast PathDiscover the shape of a nationWales’s newest attraction will be open in Spring 2012 Fancy an 870 mile stroll? The Wales Coast Path is your answer, stretching continuously from near Chester in the north to Chepstow in the south.

The Path is for everyone and gives you a chance to explore any part of coastal Wales, to meet the locals and enjoy the fresh air and scenery. Consider this your invitation to step out and enjoy our new national endeavour, even if you don’t walk the whole thing!

Work to create the Wales Coast Path is co-ordinated by the Countryside Council for Wales and delivered on the ground by local authorities. It is funded by the Welsh Government, the European Regional Development Fund and the coastal local authorities.
