It has led major campaigns and protests against the British National Party (BNP), the National Front (NF) and English Defence League. Following the 2014 European and English-council election results, all anti-fascists will have celebrated the news that the BNP lost their only European Parliamentary seat. This defeat shows that the majority of people rejected the BNP’s message of hate. However across Europe far-right and fascist parties made significant gains. There can be no room for complacency here in Britain. UKIP ‘s election victory is a very worrying development. Though not a fascist Swansea Pride 2014 party, UKIP creates a racist climate where nazi parties could grow. The rise of fascist and far-right 'populist' parties are a warning to us all - rights that have been won from past battles need to be defended. Pride takes place because it was fought for - but would, for example, a UKIP- controlled council try to ban it? Hundreds of thousands demonstrated recently against gay-marriage in France, partly thanks to the growth of the fascist Front National. Fascist and racist parties cut their teeth on anti-immigrant racism and Islamophobia. However filthy prejudiced ideas about LGBT people, women and others lurk just beneath the surface and come more to the fore as the right grow in confidence. In Swansea we have had an NF 'white-pride' event for the past two years - the NF would love to attack events like Pride, or target individual LGBT people, if they are allowed to grow. Unite Against Fascism is proud of the role it has played over the last decade in helping defeat the BNP and more recently the racist English Defence League. But we are clear our job is far from done. Over the coming months we will continue to ensure that fascist parties do not make any gains in British politics. We also believe that it is vital we campaign to stop the rise of racist and fascist parties across Europe and along with other campaigning groups we will be combating the rise of UKIP. The anti-fascist fight therefore demands unity - between gay and straight, black and white, Christian and Muslim - to combat the nazis threat.
