Introduction

Hello! Welcome to season 2018.

Enclosed in the following pages lies the Umpiring Manual for all SDJFUA umpires for the 2018 season. Or as we have come to know it, “The Handbook”. This manual has been designed to be an invaluable resource for umpires with all the information they may need to know at certain stages of the season stored in these pages! We hope, that by creating this document it will allow you (as umpires) an avenue to find answers without having to rely on word of mouth or asking a committee member. We hope that this will alleviate many of the double, treble, quadruple and even fifty up questions that we get across the season. If we can save some time and effort, this will make the season run much, much smoother!

So please, use this resource as your first port of call for any and all questions you may have.

Regards,

The Committee!

Training Overview

Page 7: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

Umpires (like all sports) conduct weekly training sessions to enhance physical fitness and skills. Training at this level is designed to be fun, while also instilling the necessary skills required to perform at a high level come game day. At SDJFUA we pride ourselves on the training content (from beginner to advance), structure and welcoming environment we provide.

Venues & Times

Pre-season:

Pre-season training will commence on the 5 th of February on a Monday & 7 th of February on the Wednesday.

Time: 6-7pm sharp. An hour is a short pre-season session; hence training will begin at 6pm sharp.

In-Season:

In-Season training will commence on the 21 st of March . At this point there will no longer be a Monday session. The actual season (where games occur) does not begin until weekend 27th to 29th April, However, we have decided to bring the group together earlier to build cohesion and deliver the same message to all individuals.

Venue:

Altone Park Oval

Pre-Season Training

The umpiring pre-season starts in early February. Pre-season is meant to be highly enjoyable as well as challenging you physically and mentally. Ultimately the aim is to have fun and prepare you for the rigours of the season.

There will be some significant changes to the 2018 pre-season, these will be outlined later.

Expectations – Importance of Attendance

Pre-Season is vitally important for preparing for the season and developing an understanding of rules and fellow umpires. As such, it is expected that umpires attend 1 session (either the Monday or Wednesday) during the pre-season period. There is an understanding that umpires may be unable to attend on certain nights due to other sport, school or family commitments, hence why we offer two days.

While we do understand that sometimes you just “cannot make it” it is highly encouraged that you make a genuine effort to attend. Ultimately, content at training cannot be replicated at home. If you cannot make training this is okay, during the pre-season period

Page 9: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

you are not expected to let anyone know, however if you feel the need to you can let the head coach know.

Attitude, Culture & Development

At SDJFUA we pride ourselves on our strong culture of development and positive attitude. Justin Langer the Western Warriors and Perth Scorchers Coach has a “No A** Holes” policy at the WACA, and we believe we follow in this mantra as well.

Umpires are required to give 100% effort and try all tasks. At SDJFUA we are a development organisation, and this starts with pre-season.

Pre-Season Layout & Transition into In-Season

Pre-season training will commence with a warm up, this will be followed, followed by strength and conditioning and then skills (and theory) before wrapping up with a cool down. A general structure is shown below;

Training Session Template:

6-6.10pm Warm Up

6.10-6.30 Strength & Conditioning

6.30-6.50 Skills/Theory

6.50-7.00 Cool Down & Wrap Up

After the 2017 season a post-season survey was completed in regard to pre-season. The consensus was positive however there were multiple comments that it had not been as hard (running wise) as previous seasons. Because of this during conditioning activities varying groups will be used to select how difficult the activity will be. The fitness coach (Jack Fahey-Gilmour) will designate what group you should be in; however, it is your choice from this point what you would like to do.

Last pre-season we introduced a partner system for new/less experienced umpires and established umpires. This will continue in 2018 to encourage expedited learning as well as getting to know all umpires. This practice will benefit senior umpires as well given that teaching someone a skill also develops and solidifies your own understanding of it.

The major change to pre-season will come in the structure. Monday & Wednesday sessions will run up until the 14th of March. From this point onwards only, the Wednesday session (beginning the 21st) will be run and will take on an in-season training structure and timing as well. There are many reasons for this, including;

Page 10: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

● Education of umpires is paramount in the lead up to the season, this format will allow for a consistent message across the whole group

● Cohesiveness will be increased with the group training as one

● Understanding and getting to know fellow umpires will be easier facilitated

● Division of resources (coaching & administration) will be reduced

In the lead in to the season from the 21 st of March onwards structured theory sessions will also be completed. These will be run in accordance with the Umpires Coaches handbook. Basic rules, interpretations will be covered as well as execution. This is suited for both new and experienced umpires and will ensure that all umpires are receiving the same message.

Pre-Season Central Conference Umpire Season Launch

As was the case in 2017, all Open field umpires will be required to attend the seminar to be held at Lathlain Park. The provisional date is the 11th of April. The session will run from 6-8.30pm and is compulsory. Food and drinks provided.

In-Season Training

Structure

In-season training will run similar to prior years; however theory will be conducted first before progressing through to skills. You will notice a change in training with the removal of the administration tables as our Wednesday focus will be all about training and being on the track. Other administrative tasks need to be sorted outside of training with the appropriate committee member.

In-Season training will be run as follows6-6.30pm Theory6.30-6.40pm Warm Up & Conditioning6.40-7.20pm Skills7.20-7.30pm Wrap Up & Communications

Training Groups

There will be three main groups that will be designated during the year. There will be a Modified group, Open field group and a Goals/Boundary group. Each group is described below;

Modified Field Group: Umpires who are currently umpiring or wishing to umpire in the modified age group. All new umpires will generally find their way into this group to begin with.

Page 11: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

Open Field Group: This is for umpires who are currently umpiring in the open field age groups Year 7-12. Umpires who are being considered for open field selection will also train in this group.

Goals/Boundary Group: This is for umpires who only want to (or predominantly) want to do boundary/goals. They will often train with the Open field group or Modified group depending on the activity planned. Numbers in this group may fluctuate heavily.

Umpires will be allocated to a group based on umpire and coaching staff input. It is possible to belong to both a field group and the goals/boundary group.

Theory Resources & Online Quizzes

All theory slides and video resources will be posted to the website for use by umpires. This will allow umpires to download and review by themselves. Further it will allow umpires who missed training a chance to catch up on the content that was completed in that week.

Theory resources can be found here: http://www.swansumpires.org.au/Downloads - under training content and useful resources.

In addition to the theory covered at training, there will be the opportunity to complete online quizzes that will be sent out each week through MOS. More information will be provided closer to the date.

Attendance

Training attendance during the in-season period is compulsory unless otherwise specified by the umpire manager and/or head coach. When it rains? Yes. If it hails? Yes. If it is 40 degrees? Yes.

It is imperative that umpires attend training during the season as topics need to be addressed from week to week. While we would like to avoid this, at a junior level it is unavoidable. Lack of training attendance leads to inconsistencies in messages or not even receiving them. In the 2018 season, lack of un-notified training attendance will result in umpiring appointments withheld or demoted on a stricter basis.

Umpires will be asked to record their attendance on a sheet of paper that will be made available on each given night. As training attendance forms a critical component to ensuring a smooth season, it also is a deciding factor in finals game appointments.

Coaching

Coaching Staff

Page 12: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

As at all sporting clubs, coaching is a critical component to establishing a strong culture, developing people and creating sustainable success. As per the SDJFUA ethos: , our coaches aim to enforce this. SDJFUA have a number of coaches who will be your first port of call at training and come game day.

Jack Fahey-Gilmour: Head Coach

Jack will oversee the entire training program and coaching panel. This includes; Being the 1st point of call for game day / game related incidents (yellow & red cards,

and other incidents) Selection of umpires for appointments & finals Match day coaching and managing Match Official System (MOS) Conducting umpire reviews and feedback Design and implementation of training (S&C, Theory, Skills) Answer any questions relating to AFL Laws of the Game, Year3-Year12 specific laws

and junior bylaws. Predominantly working and being responsible for the open field umpiring group Implementing mentor program Anything else on-field or training related

Lachlan Fahey-Gilmour: Assistant Coach

Lachlan is a current WAFL Panel umpire and will be assisting once again in 2018. He will be responsible for;

Working predominantly with the modified group and goal/boundary umpire group Assisting in the design and implementation of training regimes Running the 1st year umpire accreditation program Match day coaching and mentoring MOS feedback

Jack and Lachlan will be ably assisted by a number of senior umpires and mentors during the season. Umpires should still primarily direct their questions to Jack and Lachlan.

Mentor Program

At SDJFUA we have a comprehensive Mentoring program, which in 2018 will go to the next level. Mentors are experienced umpires who assist our Modified/junior umpires on game day and are critical to providing a safe learning environment.

Mentors are responsible for providing positive and constructive feedback on match day and through Match Official System or MOS. Mentors are remunerated $20 per game completed. Payment will be withheld if a review it is not completed.

The Mentor program is overseen by the Head Coach.

Page 13: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

In 2018, umpires who are willing to mentor our modified/junior umpires (and satisfy the requirements) will be required to attend a monthly meeting post-training as designated by the Head Coach. These meetings will run for ~30mins on the LAST Wednesday of each month, commencing on the 28 th of March . Meeting invites will be sent out by Jack Fahey-Gilmour a week in advance, however are also listed under ‘Important Dates’. The aim of these meetings will be to discuss individual umpires, trends across the modified age groups, mentor development, strategies to deal with parents/coaches and anything else that is cause for concern/applause.

To be considered for a mentor position, you must for fill the following criteria;1. Have umpired 50 or more open field (year 7-12) games2. Be able to communicate simply and efficiently with young/inexperienced umpires3. Strong communication and conflict resolution skills (e.g. be able to deal with angry

coaches/managers/parents)4. In-depth knowledge of the AFL laws as well as modified rules5. Be willing to complete a MOS on each umpire observed in a timely manner

(<48hours)6. Strive towards the SDJFUA ethos at all times7. Be available to mentor Friday and/or Sunday before and/or straight after games

Umpires who believe they satisfy this criteria need to email [email protected] and express their interest.

People who are in the mentor program will be added to the [email protected] email distribution group.

Feedback

In 2018 feedback to umpires will be provided in several ways; For Field umpires, predominantly through MOS

o Completed by MDC in MOS 24-48 hours post game At training from coaching staff and experienced umpires From officially appointed Match Day Coaches (MDC) Self-reflection – MOS Mid-Season Reviews – conducted by the head coach

o Mid-Season reviews will be held on a pre-allocated day (TBC).o Jack Fahey-Gilmour will post a time sheet of available times in which umpires

will be able to book in for a 10minute time slot to review their performances thus far in the season and set goals moving forward.

o It is up to the umpire’s discretion as to whether or not they would like to have a mid-season review.

Page 14: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

o More information regarding mid-season reviews will be made available closer to the date.

As umpires it is critical to remember that if you go unnoticed then you have done a good job, often limited feedback is a great sign!

Feedback will always be given in the form of a complement sandwich (ie. Positive, Constructive, Positive comments respectively). It is critical that umpires know exactly how they are going from coaching staff. Coaches will always be transparent and clear in their messages – “challenging but supportive”. If umpires are confused or strongly disagree with any comments made from mentors/MDC they are to inform the head coach and discussions will be taken further to erase any confusion or angst.

Appointments

Appointments will be selected by the head coach (& assistant coach) each week in consultation with the umpire manager. Appointments are allocated through Schedula according to umpire availability as well as the following criteria.

Umpires will be appointed games based on their ability as well as the following categories;1. Participation at training: do you attend training and perform well? Do you participate

and engage well with fellow umpires? Do you understand the laws and can execute the skills?

a. Measured through coaching staff interactions and observations2. Game day performance: how well do you umpire? Can you manage the game?

a. Measured through MOS & MDC3. Intangibles: can you cope under pressure? Do you give 100% effort to your actions?

Do you conduct yourself in a professional manner? Do you represent a SDJFUA umpire?

a. Measured through coaching staff interactions and observations

As can be seen, not always does the ‘best’ umpire get rewarded. This criteria maintained for finals selection as well.

If you believe you are umpiring below the level you think you should be doing, you are encouraged to make contact with the head coach to discuss. This will increase transparency and open a dialogue to ensure both parties are on the same wave length.

Finals Appointments

Final appointments can become tricky and competitive to appoint. During finals, preference is given to the umpires who satisfy the above criteria. If umpires are playing football this often takes precedence (no issue), however this may impact umpires ability to vie for their preferred umpiring appointment.

Page 15: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

Who will I be umpiring? Are the rules the same as the AFL?

The SDJFUA falls into the Central Conference. This encapsulates the Swan Districts, East Perth and Perth zones.

SDJFUA umpires modified games only in the Swan Districts zone, from Chittering, to Gidgegannup to Bassendean. Fair to say it is vast. Modified rules are for years 3-7 and is the first starting point for any new umpire doing field umpiring. In the Swan Districts zone each modified grade is governed by a flow chart (which will be available) and is the responsibility of the umpire to know and understand this prior to their games. The modified games are normally played on Sunday mornings and Friday nights, on modified ground sizes. In the Year 7 competition the rules are the same as Year 8's (open field).

SDJFUA umpires also umpire in the open field competition, Year 8-12s. The open field competition has teams from each of the three zones playing against each other. We endeavour to keep our SDJFUA umpires in our Swan Districts zone, but sometimes they have to go out of zone depending on the distribution of games each week. The open rules competition is not the AFL, there are a number of by-laws that supersede the AFL laws and can be found in the Junior Club Manual. These will be highlighted once the final version of the Manual has been supplied.

In 2017, SDJFUA umpired the Junior and Youth Girls competitions of a Friday night at various locations in the Swan Districts zone. This competition is set to expand! With double the number of teams entered this year. It has been proposed that these competitions will be run on a Friday and Monday night. Yes, a Monday night. Therefore opening up more opportunities to umpire. If you are available to umpire these competitions you must have your availability for Friday and Monday included in Schedula. The Junior Girls runs on a modified ground with rules similar to Yr3-4. Youth Girls runs also on a modified ground with rules similar to Year 6. However, it is likely we will see significant change to these laws in 2018. Hence these will be confirmed closer to the date.

Game DayExpectationsAs an umpire, let alone a SDJFUA umpire, it is your responsibility to provide a professional service to the game. It is important that all SDJFUA umpires act with respect and professionalism whenever they don the uniform, this includes prior to and post-game as well as during the week. At SDJFUA we pride ourselves on being a professional outfit, we hope to once again do this in 2018.

Procedures Aside from actually umpiring the game…there are a number of key responsibilities required of an umpire. These include;

Completing match day paperwork (including best and fairest voting for Year 8-12)

Page 16: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

o Match day paperwork process is yet to be finalised. When finalised relevant information will be uploaded here.

Completing incident reports in the case of a report (e.g. red cards, spectator report)o In 2018, we will be streamlining this process. Relevant paper work links will

be uploaded here in due course. Giving information at tribunal

o In 2018 we hope that in the event of a report, umpires will not have to attend tribunal but complete a detailed incident form (Link TBC) and thus not prevent extra travel and wasted training time on Wednesday nights.

More information surrounding match day and general procedures will be updated closer to the season.

Rules

As currently stands, the AFL laws for 2018 have remained unchanged.

We are currently waiting on the confirmation of the Junior Club Manual (Global by-laws) and the JCC's additional by-laws to be confirmed. Once this has occurred this section will be updated.

Once all laws are finalised, the bylaws, club manual and AFL law books will be uploaded to the ‘Downloads’ page of the SDJFUA website. It is expected that each umpire has these documents downloaded and stored on their phone at all times with hard copies of certain documents outline in the ‘Game Day Checklists’

A hard copy version of important pages of the junior bylaws and the AFL law book will be provided to all umpires once finalised.

Recruitment & Retention

Recruitment:

The role of recruitment is one that is everyone can play apart in. Maintaining our operational numbers is important to ensure we cover as many games as possible every week during the season. We at SDJFUA are faced by many competing values with the diverse age across out squad. We lose Umpires each year for a range of reasons and it important for the Management Team to understand why. It is one of our goals to develop Umpires up to the next level (Development squad, WAFL) therefore is pleasing when our Umpires get these opportunities. How do I contribute to recruitment?

● Talk with your mates, invite them down.● Talk to your mates at school, invite them down.● Talk with your brothers or sisters, invite them down.● Talk with Mum and Dad, invite them down.

Page 18: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

● Place flyers around your Gym, School, Cricket Club etc.…

Retention:

Once we have Umpires join our squad, time and money is invested in those Umpires. It is vital that we retain Umpires for the long term. One key retention strategy is that Umpires must enjoy what they do. It must be fun; the environment must be a team environment and we really want Umpires to look forward to coming back each week. Feedback to the Management Team is also important, tell us what you are thinking, tell us what’s good, tell us what’s not good, it’s about making the experience good for you.

Fundraising & Social Events

Just like every sporting club, we too must fundraise in order to see our activities and operations remain successful and to keep us able to provide the best training and umpiring we can. Your two fundraising committee members for 2018 Cassidy & Alexa are hard at work organising some great fundraisers that will also be fun for everyone involved. We do ask that as many people as possible participate whether it be at a sausage sizzle or quiz night or by selling chocolate boxes as all the money raised goes directly to the club and back into your umpiring. We also are open to sponsorship so if anyone has any family or friends whose business might be interested, please let us know. You can find our contact details in the committee contacts page. We are looking forward to an exciting and successful 2018 but this can only be achieved with your help.

AFL Experience & External Carnivals

Several additional umpiring opportunities will present themselves in 2018.

Page 19: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

These include AFL & AFLW Half Time Umpiring at Optus Stadium along with various football carnivals organised by the WAFC.

In previous seasons SDJFUA umpires have been involved in the Kirby Bentley Cup, Maali Carnival and State Championships creating lots of additional opportunities to umpire AFL. It's often at these umpiring appointments that talent scouts have noticed SDJFUA umpires for the first time and extended invitations to progress on the umpiring pathway at higher levels.

Administration (Becoming A SDJFUA Umpire)

Membership Fee

From the 2018 season onwards SDJFUA will be charging a membership fee to all active umpires. The fee may vary season to season depending on the clubs financial position but as a non for profit club its main purpose is to fill shortfall from previous year so that the club remains financial. The past two seasons combined have seen a shortfall of around $ 8000.00 so we need to stop this trend through the membership fee, sponsorship & fundraising.

Our SDJFUA membership fee is extremely competitive when compared with other umpiring groups as we understand membership fees are up to $ 200.00. Our focus is to keep membership fees at a minimum at SDJFUA. Jeff's (our manager's) vision is fee free for all umpires but not possible for 2018, so is something to work towards.

2018 New Umpires membership fee will be $ 50.00 and includes training shirt, match day umpiring bag, field umpire whistle, law book & cards. This fee recovers approximately 1/2 of the cost incurred by SDJFUA to provide these supplies.

2018 Returning members’ fee will be $ 50.00 per season.

Payment Method:

Preferred method of payment is through EFT into the SDJFUA bank account.BSB: 066001Account Number: 10453595With umpire surname as the deposit reference.

Alternative payments include cash or cheque in a named envelope to Antoinette at training. However, EFT is preferred.

Membership Payment Deadline:

18th of April. Appointments will be withheld if members are not financial.

The association has its own website that is used to display the association and hold critical information. The website (http://www.swansumpires.org.au/) is also the first port of call for any new umpire.

In order to be SDJFUA umpire you must join the association by following this link: http://www.swansumpires.org.au/Join-Swans-Umpires

From here you will be approved by a member of the committee (Umpire Manager/Secretary/Head Coach) and receive a follow-up email with instructions to follow. Members will only be approved if sighted at SDJFUA training.

Sporting Pulse

Sporting Pulse registration is the next port of call in signing up. This is very self-explanatory and just needs to be followed through. By registering on Sporting Pulse, you register to become part of the Central Conference (SDJFUA falls within this grouping). All umpires new and established must join on Sporting Pulse through the following link as all profiles have been wiped.

Schedula

Once created on Sporting Pulse, a Schedula account will be set up for you in 2-3 hours. You will receive an email to the same one you joined Sporting Pulse with. You need to follow the instructions in this email to register for Schedula. Applies to NEW and EXISTING umpires.

Schedula is the official system that we use to appoint umpires. In season 2018 there will be stricter ramifications and management of Schedula to ensure a smooth and accountable process.

Schedula allows an individual to enter their availability for each day of the season (Friday/Sunday/Monday). Umpires must enter all relevant information including Bank Details as this will be the bank your pays are nominated into on a fortnightly basis. Umpires need to enter their availability in order to be appointed games, the umpire manager and head coach cannot appoint umpires unless they show as available on Schedula, hence it is vital this is completed appropriately and on time.

Instructions on how to use Schedula can be found at the following link.

2018 Schedula Instructions

Guidelines on Schedula use are as follows;

Page 21: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

1. Availability must be entered on the Sunday night of each week.2. Appointments will be released on Monday night/Tuesday morning of each week.3. Umpires who are unavailable for a certain time frame (e.g. playing football) must

block out their game/event using specific availability for that certain day + 30mins travel time either side of their game/event.

4. Umpires who need to be contacted regarding incorrect availability will be fined $5 payable on Wednesday night to the treasurer.

a. Repeat offenders will be fined a 2nd time and subsequently be demoted (hopefully this is not the case).

5. Umpires who ask at training about changing their appointment on Wednesday night will be fined $5 unless it is for extreme circumstances that were not known prior to Sunday night.

6. Schedula is the responsibility of each umpire (not parent), therefore all penalties and blame will be directed to the umpire in question no matter the age.

7. As an appointment group (Jeff and Jack) we hope that these stricter measures mean that we will not spend 5+ hours doing the appointments, as we did on Mondays in season 2017. Rather, we hope that all umpires are able to get on board and be self-sufficient. In saying this, if you are struggling, please reach out to the umpire manager.

8. If you are going away e.g. school camp, exchange, family holiday, this needs to be shown through Schedula as well as an email notifying the umpire manager and head coach of your absence.

Match Official System (MOS)

MOS is used to provide feedback to umpires on game day performance. It is to be completed by match day coaches and mentors when observing umpires as well as self-completion when no MDC is available.

In order to sign up to MOS, you need to send [email protected] an email requesting access. All existing umpires (2017 and pre) will already be signed up, and hence do not have to email.

MOS is critical for determining finals appointments and maintaining a strong portal for self, peer and coach feedback. Hence, the guidelines for 2018 are as follows;1. Games when a MDC is officially appointed through Schedula does not require the

completion of a MOS.2. In games where a MDC is not officially appointed through Schedula, it is optional

(but highly encouraged) that a MOS review is completed for the highest grade of the weekend.

3. Self-reflection MOS reports are monitored by Coaches and Mentors (lead by Jack & Lachlan) with self-report feedback commented on.

Page 22: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

In season 2017, self-report MOS reviews were compulsory. In 2018, MOS will be optional, we hope that this encourages umpires to self-reflect in their own time without the pressure of coaching staff. Please keep in mind that self-reflection is an important tool and MOS is an excellent platform to track your progress through the season.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The following FAQ’s have been put together after many years of receiving the same question. It is our hope that you use this resource to answer any question that you may have in regards to anything basic, through to the complicated. It is our hope, that you turn to this FIRST before asking committee members. It is important to remember that there is only 1 umpire’s manager, 1 head coach, 1 treasurer etc... And in excess of 70 umpires (hopefully 100 by end of season), hence the need for a forum of expected responses.

Q: What is the best way to contact a committee member, particularly, Jeff or Jack?

A: Email is preferable, followed by text message, then phone call and finally at training. It is important the communication is completed in this way to avoid information overload on these individuals at training, especially considering our focus this year is to remove administration tasks from Wednesday night training. Most questions can be answered by reading the following FAQ. Please check these before asking your question.

Q: Who do I contact if I am running late to training or games?

A: If you are going to miss the start of the game you need to contact Jack Fahey-Gilmour (0447 777 470) as well as any fellow umpires who are at the ground. If you will make it in time for the start of the game, you only need to let an umpire at the ground know you are running late. For training, you need to let Jack Fahey-Gilmour (0447 777 470) know.

Q: Do I need to attend training if I am sick or injured?

A: If you are sick – stay home and get yourself better! If you an injured, you are still required to attend training. There will be something for you to do.

Q: What do I do if I cannot umpire at a certain time slot on the weekend due to footy, family commitments, birthdays etc.

A: Not a problem. All you do is make yourself unavailable on schedula by Sunday night the week before for the time slot you cannot umpire on the weekend and add 30mins on either side. For example, if I am playing football on Sunday at 10.30am, I make myself unavailable from 9am (arrive an hour before the game +30min travel time) until 12.30pm.

Q: What do I do if I cannot umpire AT ALL on the weekend due to footy, family commitments, birthdays etc.

A: Easy – block out the whole day on Schedula by Sunday evening the week before

Q: What time do I have to have my schedula availability in by?

A: Sunday Night

Page 27: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

Q: What happens if I have not updated my schedula correctly and I get appointed a game I cannot do or Jack/Jeff has to contact me regarding my availability?

A: $5 fine. You will also be demoted to a lower grade. For repeat offenders, a week removed from umpiring may ensure. This may seem harsh; however, appointments take 4-5 hours/week to complete and incorrect schedula availability causes chaos and hours of wasted time.

Q: When will I receive my appointment? Or know when I am umpiring?

A: In most instances you will receive your appointment Monday night/Tuesday morning. Schedula will send you an email to your designated email account. Sometimes un-foreseen circumstances occur, and appointments need to be altered late into the week but you will be contacted in this instance.

Q: How and when will I get paid?

A: Schedula will pay you to your designated bank account every fortnight.

Q: What happens if my pay does not add up to the games I completed?

A: Please EMAIL [email protected] with the exact details and he will do cross checks and query with conference payroll department.

Q: What do I do if I am going on holidays, school camp etc. and it stops me from attending training/games? Will this impact my finals aspirations?

A: Let Jack Fahey-Gilmour & Jeff Fahey-Gilmour know via email. There is the potential that this may impact your finals aspirations depending on the length of absence. Best to discuss with Jack.

Q: What do I do if I am unhappy with the grade I am umpiring or the feedback I am receiving?

A: Organise a conversation with Jack Fahey-Gilmour, whether this be over email, at training or over the phone. Any of these options are satisfactory. It is important that there is a dialogue and conversation regarding any issues in this area.

Q: When will I receive feedback on my performance?

A: At training from designated coaching staff and fellow umpires. On game day from match day coaches and senior umpires. If a mentor or MDC is appointed, then a MOS will be completed online.

Q: What do I do if I am ready to umpire mods or move up a grade?

Page 28: Swan Districts Junior Umpire Association (SDJFUA) · Web viewUmpires who are being considered for open field selection will ... is governed by a flow chart ... of recruitment is one

A: You need to email Jack Fahey-Gilmour regarding this matter. A conversation will then be held between the umpire, Jack & the coach for that group – modified or open field coach. Extra observation will occur if necessary from Jack. A frank assessment will be provided.

Q: What do I do if I have a red card in my game?

A: Contact Jack (0447 777 470) immediately post game. If it occurs before half time, send Jack a text at half time with preliminary details. An incident report will then need to be completed and sent to Jack before Monday morning. The incident forms can be found on the website under the download section.

Q: What do I do if I have a yellow card or spectator warning in my game?

A: Call Jack (0447 777 470) to discuss and inform.

Q: What do I need to bring to training?

A: Refer to training checklist

Q: What do I need to bring to games?

A: Refer to game checklist

Q: What if I play football/sport, can I still umpire?

A: Yes, you will just have to ensure your availability is scheduled correctly on schedula.

Q: Will I automatically start in field? Or umpire week 1?

A: No. You will be assessed by the coaching staff and appointments will be allocated from there. Preference will be given to umpires who have attended training. The best umpire will not always get the best appointment. New umpires will start on the boundary/goals before transitioning into the mods/open field if they are deemed cable and would like to.

Q: How will games/finals be allocated?

A: Games will be given to the best Swans umpires, this is not necessarily the best umpire. Assessment encompasses game performance, training performance and overall attitude. This will be assessed by the coaching staff, and ultimately head coach.
