Some say if you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life. If that’s true, I may just have the best job in the world. The past few months, my work allowed me to chill at Dallas Maverick Shawn Marion’s beautiful home and get a inside look on the life of an NBA star; celebrate with Ross Perot and his family at the opening gala for the new Perot Museum of Nature & Science; munch on the most amazing cheesesteak from Ruthie’s Rolling Cafe Food Truck (add blue cheese); Join Selena Gomez and Ryan Seacrest for the opening of Seacrest Studios here in Dallas at Children’s Hospital and walk about our beautiful new Klyde Warren Park in downtown Dallas! But my favorite days are spent sharing great moments with my 15 year old son, Tyler. It’s always great when he shares awesome experiences with me. Any day is awesome in Dallas enjoying all our city has to offer with family and friends.

Welcome to a new issue of SWAGG! Our goal is to bring you the best our city has to offer! We have a new publishing vision and we want to welcome our new editors, Beth Ann Kaminkow, CEO at TracyLocke and Shana Stein, attorney and yoga guru. They both have awesome visions and will be bringing their talent and creativeness to SWAGG and we are thrilled to welcome them.

Enjoy getting to know NBA star and style king Shawn Marion in this issue and make sure you check out the “Behind the Scenes” pics on our SCENE pages! I’m looking forward to attending one if Shawn’s parties at that amazing home!

Blow-Up Galleryis great art fora great cause -Samuel Bistrian

By: Scott Tucker

After two years of successful pop up gallery openings including The Vitamin Social at Kettle Art Gallery and Phantograms at Rising Gallery, local musician and artist Scott Tucker (THE ORANGE) has partnered with Samuel Bistrian of Roma Boots to open Blow-Up Gallery. Blow-Up Gallery is cool, sheik and utilitarian. Located at the newly finished Shops at Park Lane, Blow-Up Gallery caters to both high end clientele and seems more like something you may find in the Chelsea

district of London or New York. The idea behind the gallery is to feature what Tucker considers, “the best producing artists living in Dallas”. The Blow-Up artist roster reads like a local who’s who including rising stars Megan Van Groll, Alex Remington, Daniel Driensky and Melissa Tucker. Veteran artists Frank Campagna, Kevin McCartney, and Tucker’s father Scott Tucker Sr. round out the roster list. In the spirit of charity Blow-Up Gallery donates 10% of the gallery proceeds to The Roma Boots Foundation, a non- profit organization started by Sam Bistrian in 2010. The Roma Boots Foundation provides both education and colorful rain boots for globally impoverished children in a one for one program. Blow-Up Gallery’s December 8th soft opening Twilight of the Idols, was jam packed with over 300 art enthusiasts and collectors. Other members of Tucker’s band THE ORANGE were not shy to contribute as guitarist Kirk Livesay and Bassist Jason Jessup took over bar duty for the night. Several works of art were sold right off the walls as the soft opening was a success. Blow- Up Gallery is currently open by appointment. Scott Tucker and Samuel Bistrian anticipate Blow-Up Gallery being a beacon of rich cultural activity in 2013.

EAT: I caught up reccently with Brian Johnson, a personal trainer andnutritional consultant, who spent seven years serving in the medical training division of Cooper Aerobics before going out on his own. I asked him for four food rules:

1. Stick as close to nature as possible. Choose meats that are raised on that animal’s natural diet. By consuming foods in their natural state, they give us more nutrients, increasing health.

2. Eliminate consumption of man-made foods (high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated/trans fats, chemical additives, preservatives). They wreak havoc on the body’s biochemistry. Steer clear at all costs!

3. Health starts in the gut, so incorporate a quality probiotic and/or a nice daily helping of fermented foods, like kombucha or sauerkraut. Shoot for a small amount at every meal.

4. Don’t forget the 80/20 rule. Follow these guidelines 80% of the time, and enjoy yourself the other 20%. This allows you to become more adaptable, bettering your health along the way.

LIVE:Forget your new year’s resolutions and make new life ones. It isn’t about the year, it’s about the long haul. Change doesn’t happen overnight. It happens little by little, while you’re busy making plans. If you let it. This year resolve to be happy and healthy. Follow your heart. Follow your passion. Worry less. Love more. Step outside your comfort zone. Try new things. Give back to your community.

SWAGG is excited to welcome our new contributing editor, Beth Ann Kaminkow, the first female President and Chief Executive of TracyLocke (branding agency). During her two decades in the industry she has touched every aspect of marketing communications

across consumer packaged goods, retail, finance, restaurant and technology companies. She jet sets back and forth from New York City to Dallas and is one of the biggest cheerleaders of the Dallas transformation taking place! We

welcome her to SWAGG!

Dallas is definitely getting its groove on. Seemingly overnight a

spectacular metamorphosis is taking place. When visions become reality, it is a spark to ignite the possibility in all of us. The renderings held so much promise. The architects, builders, and laborers delivered!

Dallas has reframed the famous Joni Mitchell song: we have paved over a ‘parking lot’ and put up paradise (original lyrics: paved over paradise and put up a parking lot.) Nowhere is

the American dream more a possibility today than in Dallas. A city where ambition is inspired, where optimism meets opportunity, and where the living is good. And the best part, the cement is still wet!

Meaning: there is opportunity for all of us to shape what is ahead.

From the Arts District to the Klyde Warren Park; from the Perot Museum to the Arboretum -- there is something for everyone. Areas such as Deep Ellum, Bishop Arts, Uptown, Downtown, and Victory Park offer a kaleidoscope of restaurants, nightlife, arts, fashion, and style.

But, there is more to be done. We must continue to show-up. To invite others to experience it. And, find ways to put our personal imprint on the future.

If it has been months or even years since you acted like a tourist in your own town, now is the time. In ways unimaginable in other cities, a renaissance is occurring that is making Dallas one of the most vital, vibrant, and visionary places to live, work and play.

Our sports, our fashion, our museums, our restaurants, our hotels, our parks

(now!), are on par with the world’s top cities. Plus, we have our special ingredients that are inexplicably Dallas: our unique mixture of style, sexy, swagger, grace, grit and hospitality.

I recently heard that in Austin there is an expression,

To that we proudly say, come get your Dallas On!

ShawnMarion

Shawn Marion is the personification of a winning basketball player. During his career, he has averaged 16.3 points per game, 9.2 rebounds per game and is a four-time NBA All-Star. He ranks in the Top 100 in career scoring in the NBA, the top 30 in steals and recently became just the fifth player in NBA history with 16,000 points, 9,000 rebounds and 1,500 steals (joining such NBA legends as Hakeem Olajuwon, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley and Kevin Garnett). He is also just the fifth player ever to amass 1,500 steals

and 1,000 blocks (Olajuwon, Malone, Garnett, Julius Erving). He keeps very lofty company indeed – all are either already in the Hall of Fame or will be as soon as they are eligible.

Marion is the definition of a champion and a team player who does whatever is necessary for his team to succeed, whether it be guarding the opposition’s best player or running the break for an electrifying dunk. If there’s a hole to fill, Marion is the man to do it.

He is one of the most successful and unique players in the league today, and has earned a ton of money over is 14-year career, all of it well-deserved.

However, the t-shirt, slippers and Chicago Cubs sweats that he’s wearing when he answers the door upon our arrival for our interview and photo shoot don’t exactly scream “Multi-millionaire fashion icon.” “I’ve never had any problem with being who I am, doing my own stuff,” Marion confidently states later during our discussion. “I have no problem being me and not worrying what everyone may think about me.”

Being himself comes easily to Marion these days. A wonderful career in which he has done nothing but carry himself with class and grace both on and off the court have earned him a respect level among fans and peers that is among the highest in the NBA, and we are eager to sit down with the man that TNT’s Kenny Smith dubbed “The Matrix” many years ago for his seemingly inhuman athleticism.

It’s an unseasonably warm December Sunday afternoon in a fairly hidden area in North Dallas when we meet Marion at his home. It takes seconds to identify which of the houses in the cul-de-sac has to be his: the large modern-looking two-story with the boat and jet ski in the front – more on Marion’s affinity for his “toys” in a bit.

By: Scott Rozsa

Page 20: SWAGG Magazine Spring 2013

20 www.swaggmags.com

However, it’s not overrun with outlandish European sports cars – the canary Maserati that Marion had been photographed with in the past was sold to former teammate JJ Barea - or a garish gold-plated gate, but rather somewhat understated and classy. He’s a man who has learned to respect and remember where he came from, as well as appreciate what he has earned, while remaining humble, honest and held in high esteem.

Marion will be forever linked with the city of Dallas for helping bring the Dallas Mavericks their first NBA title back in 2011. “Bringing a championship to an organization like the Mavericks and a great city like Dallas was unbelievable. We had a half million people down there (during the parade) in the heat, it was like the city was alive.” Marion was like the heart beat of the Victory Celebration, leading the team in dances and feeling the most at home on the stage reveling with the fans. It was a lengthy journey for him and many of the other Mavs to reach the pinnacle of the basketball mountain. “It just shows how much we came together as a team, how much we believed in each other, supported each other and held each other accountable,” Marion gushes as he sits up straight when recounting his team’s memorable run. “It was a great TEAM championship. Everybody helped each other, and played off each other. You win as a team, you lose as individuals.”

With such an effervescent personality and a reputation for getting the most out of life, and now that he has been in our city for four years, we had to ask how Dallas suited Marion’s lifestyle. “Aw man, I’m so laid back now, so much more than even seven

or eight years ago. I just love being around good people, good friends, family and enjoying quality time. I’ve only been out once this season.”

Marion stresses that for him, the simple things in life bring him the most satisfaction now: friends, family, conversation, but one thing in particular shines above the others:

“You work hard to have nice things, but let me tell you this, your pride and

joy should be your house. I love my house, that’s why I don’t really need to go anywhere. I have people come over

and I may just disappear and go chill in my room.”

Marion’s crib is stylish, but never over-the-top. The entrance is all clean white marble, the walls are adorned with large, colorful works of modern art and there are a handful of sculptures (including a copy of a fascinating Picasso glass head that catches all of our attention). All of the rooms are similarly simple and tastefully decorated, from his well amplified and stocked movie room, to his “All-bases covered” game room – Marion is a huge fan of classic video games and has one sit-down, old school machine that is loaded with all of the vintage games of his youth - to his cozy bedroom. One of the constants running through the house is the “Matrix 31” logo that appears on furniture, bowls and coasters; with a nickname like that, why wouldn’t he flaunt it?

Page 21: SWAGG Magazine Spring 2013

21

And then here’s The Closet. It’s a massive walk-in closet with two entrances that would make any fashionista jealous. Rows of suits, jackets, t-shirts and sweaters stretch about fifteen feet high; a library-style ladder on a track is needed to reach the top rows.

“I got a lot of sweaters,” Marion observes. “Shoes are ridiculous!”

No kidding! There are racks and racks of sneakers and designer dress shoes that would seemingly make trying to choose what shoes to wear every day take hours. Every color. Every style. It’s all here. But ask Marion what really sets him apart, and you’ll get asurprising answer.

“I got lots of glasses. I started that! Man, listen, go back and do research. I

started that. The little geeky glasses thing. Trust me. I’ve been doing that for

over five years. I got a collection of glasses!”

In fact, Marion’s collection of eye wear is so extensive – step off Wade, LeBron and Westbrook - that he had just received a vintage storage case for his frames that had been shipped to him from China the daybefore we arrived that he had yet to relocate to his closet.

For Marion, fashion isn’t just about collecting expensive pieces of clothing, but it carries a far more important meaning. He is adamant that successful professional athletes have a responsibility and almost a duty to carry themselves a certain way in public. “Every time I walk out that door, I’m going to be judged by how I carry myself.”

“I used to be really sheltered and never go outside my box. It used to just be me and my boys, behind the ropes – we up in here, doin’ our own thing! It took me learning and opening my eyes to learn how to talk. People just want to know you, what it’s like to be a pro athlete and say hi. It takes athletes a while to grasp that. You never know who you may be talking to. Somebody may be your biggest fan and you’ll never know it cuz you’re sheltered. Or they may be giving you their number and could be helping you down the line and you may end up doing business with them or a future endorsement deal or something. You never know. How you dress and present yourself goes a long way.”

Any visit to Casa Marion isn’t complete without a quick roll call of what he’s rolling in these days.

“I got a Porsche, a Panamera. I love it, It’s my third Porsche and this by far the best one. I got a Cayenne. I still have a vintage Lincoln Continental, a Chevelle, a ‘71 Cutlass rag top. I put a Mercedes Benz top on the Lincoln. I’ve got 8 cars here now.”

Unlike some other athletes who may prefer to show off their rides out in front of the house, Marion is far more subtle. His fleet is stored comfortably in his garage via lifts, and when we poke our heads in there, we discover a ride he forgot to mention, a custom trike emblazoned with Mavericks and Matrix-31 logos. Shawn also has a passion for the water, and boat and jet skis round out his collection of toys.

When he does take one of these cars out for a spin, where in Dallas does he like to go?

“Oh man, I love to eat man. I like to cook, but I re-ally enjoy going out for a good meal.”

Any place in particular?

“I went to Ocean Prime last night. I love Nick & Sam’s...Ruth’s Chris is my favorite. A lot of times I don’t even get steak, I get the chicken or salmon.”

Lastly, we had to ask...

“Ya, I have a girlfriend. We’ve only been out once since the season started. Not to clubs though,” Marion stresses. He wraps things up by offering a little advice for you all regarding the night life: “I used to club so much early in my career. It’s bad when you go out ten, fifteen years later, and you’re seeing the same people in the clubs now that you saw way back then. And people don’t understand this, y’all don’t know the secret? The club makes y’all look older. It ages you faster. Just giving you all a little info on that.”

SWAGG Magazine recently received a letter from Leonardo Carson, a previous Dallas Cowboy who made some bad choices! He is currently serving time in at The Federal Correctional Institution in Seagoville for making some bad decisions that will affect his life forever. He hopes to inspire others to take the right path and not make the same mistakes he did! Here is his letter:

My name is Leonardo Tremayne Carson, I was born and raised in Mobile, AL and attended The University of Auburn. In 1999 my senior year I was drafted in the NFL by the San Diego Chargers. I was released in 2003 and went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys where I retired 3 years later due to injuries.

From there I went on to invest my time and money in my hobby of restoring cars where I began to meet many different types of people. Through the coarse of a couple of years the opportunity came to make a lot of money in the drug game. This was the biggest downfall in my life and would become the eye opener where God got my total attention.

Blinded by the lust for money, cars, and clothes I slowly lost what I had worked so hard for years to achieve. As I let go of the principles that got me to the top I lost the respect for others including the ones that helped me get there. I failed to see my position as a blessing from God.

The chase of maintaining the lifestyle of a pro athlete was the influence of some of my decisions. But God has other plans. Dealing drugs was not part of his plan. In summary my goal is to share my experiences and stress the importance of a God centered life in order to live with a purpose. I want to be a part of the solution not the problem.

Thank you and God Bless,

Leonardo Carson

The swanky luxury chain at NorthPark Center is closing its struggling store in Dallas in April to focus on better-performing locations in cities such as New York and Los Angeles.

“After careful consideration, Barney’s New York has exercised itscontractual right to terminate the lease for its Dallas location prior to

its expiration,” a spokesperson said.

Some people say the problem may have been that the store was opened in the hometown of much larger rival Neiman Marcus, which operates two prominent stores in Dallas.“They opened just a few hundred feet away from one of Neiman’s biggest, busiest stores,” said one retail source, referring to the Barneys location at Northpark Mall in Dallas. “They never stood a chance.”

The new Belk flagship store replaces Saks Fifth Ave, which

will close their location at Galleria Dallas on June 15, 2013, after operating in Dallas since 1982.

Belk the family owned and operated department store is supposed to bring modern southern style to more than 300 locations throughout the South and on belk.com.

“We are so pleased to bring the Belk Brand to Galleria Dallas,” said Tim Belk, chairman & CEO, and grandson of founder William Henry Belk. “We are proud to join the Galleria Dallas’ list of premium retailers, and we look forward to bringing top brands, the best in

service and a deep commitment to this community – all with our Modern. Southern. Style. Texas has been a very strong market for us, and we see great opportunities for growth in the state.”

“Our merchants made their first buying trip to the Dallas market last year,” said Belk President & Chief Merchandising Officer Kathryn Bufano. “We were impressed with the vibrancy of the city, and the modern Texas style we saw. At Belk we understand local and regional markets, and we know how to translate the trends to our individual markets.”

“The planned closing of our Dallas store is consistent with our strategy

of employing our resources in our most productive locations,”said Steve Sadove, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Saks, in a release.

The department store also recently closed its store in Austin. It still operates stores in Houston and San Antonio, as well as Saks Off 5th stores at Grapevine Mills, Shops and Park Lane and Grand Prairie Premium Outlets.

We are bummed Barney’s and Saks are closing. Do you think Belk will be a good addition to the Galleria? Or Not? Let us know your thoughts on Facebook.com/SwaggMagazine.

Union Park Gastro Pub has become the ultimate social spot in Downtown Dallas since its opening. Located across Main St. from Plush Nightclub, Union Park surprises you with its swanky atmosphere

that you would commonly find in Uptown or Victory Park. Union Park’s menu offers a wide variety of tastyoptions for you to try. For starters try their very unique lobster corn dogs with a Dijon mustard dip, or their mouthwatering fried mac n’ cheese balls with ajalapeno and cilantro ranch sauce, and you can’t go wrong with their good old fashioned buffalo wings that have been called “Best in Downtown”. Various entrees on their menu include the classic chicken

and waffles or a huge chicken fried steak. Now, an interesting find on the menu is the pork shanks. They also offer great hand-crafted burgers with six different patty options and various toppings. On Sundays customers get a special treat when Union Park serves up some of their seriously good Gumbo that even makes a true Cajun beg for more.

Now you can’t talk about a pub without talking about beer. Union Park offers a laundry list of beers with some being brewed right here in North Texas. Union Park also offers a great wine list and a variety ofspecialty cocktails that will wet your whistle.

Union Park is truly a great place to meet with friends, grab some great food, and a few drinks. Your night on the town should definitely begin here.
