GOVERNMENT

"Renewables are now the fastest growing energy source on the planet. And I am proud that Britain has played a leading role at the forefront of this green energy revolution."

David Cameron, speaking to energy ministers from 23 'leading economies' in London, 26th April 2012.

BIOENERGY STRATEGY• Biomass Strategy supports 50,000 jobs by 2020

• will produce 11% of UK energy by 2020 - across heat, transport & electricity

• four key principles to guide policy; biomass must:

1. offer genuine carbon savings to 2050 & beyond

2. be cost effective in meeting climate change & energy targets

3. take into account needs of wider bioeconomy

4. be able to respond to risks such as food security & biodiversity

Page 17: SW CAN meeting 1 May 2012

HEAT STRATEGY: KEY DATA

• heating: 46% of UK energy demand & 40% of emissions

• natural gas accounts for 70% of energy used for heat

• 80% of all housing energy demand is heating & HW

• only 15% of housing energy demand for lighting & appliances

• about 80% of housing heating & HW from gas boilers

• 4 million homes (1 in 6) not heated by mains gas

Page 18: SW CAN meeting 1 May 2012

HEAT STRATEGY SOLUTIONS

• opportunity to develop heat networks & CHP

• time to revisit ESCO's?

• increased thermal efficiency through better insulation

• increased efficiency of heating delivery systems

• improved management of heat use

Page 19: SW CAN meeting 1 May 2012
Page 20: SW CAN meeting 1 May 2012

NATIONAL HEAT MAP

• designed to help developers & planners identify priority areas for low carbon heat projects

• heat densities in kWh/m2 per year

• for residential, commercial and industrial sectors

• location of CHP and power station plant shown (potential sources of heat)

• local authority & regional boundaries
