I have been asked by our International Bureau to inform you on aTV program called 11 1Aonulnent" made in 1968 .

As you may understand it is rather difficult to remember in detailwhat technical manipulations that %las made in this program, firstbecause it was several years ago and second that we made a number cprogrammes using this kind of technique during 67-68.The only t:ritten information obtainable is a small book called MON1MGNT and the mgazine Industria June -68 (cover and sides 56-60).Unforunately I don't knc .l the whereabouts of the artists involved,ut I remember that paintings and posters wens made and that there

an exihibition.

Technically we worked in two lines : geometric distortion on thescanning raster by feeding different rjaveforms to the scanning coilvideodistortion by using various filters in the noneolnposit video-signal . (This technique was used succesfully in colour in a programcalled "Space in the brain" also made in -68).

Datakraften anvands idag i de mest ovantade samman-hang, och har t.ex . lett till nya och intressanta relationermellan konst och teknologi . Under det nyliga TM-semina-riet (med temat ))Bilderv>) visades en del prov pa konst sourutforts med hjalp av datorer .

Dels visades ett antal grafiska blad i urval av konstnarernaBror Wikstrom och Sven Hoglund, delar av en svensk-fransk vandringsutstallning kallad »Datom och Konstna-

rem) (den premiarvisades pa Centre Culturel Suedois i Parisoch har sedan tumerat i Frankrike och Sverige) . Huvud-delen bestar av grafik, malningar och fotomontage . Darfinns ocksa en skulptur i rostfritt stal (Ikaros 10-S) somutforts av konstnarerna Kammere-Luka och Kempf i Bel-fort-gruppen med hjalp av en CDC-dator . Tredimensionel-la objekt kan fran ett dataprogram framstallas direkt medhjalp av en numeriskt styrd maskin . Skapandeprocessen,fran ide till fardigt verk, blir pa sd satt helt automatiserad .

Deis visades under TM-seminariet ocksa tva datahologramframstallda av Bror Wikstrom och Sven H6glund, fram-stallda medelst dataprogrammerat skissmaterial hos Elek-tronmusikstudion (EMS) i Stockholm och tillverkade i enspecialbyggd optisk laserprinter hos Multiplex Corp., 454Shotwell St., San Fransisco, California 94110 . Systemet,s.k . multiplexhologram, har utvecklats av Lloyd Crossoch ger ett r6rligt hologram med 120 eller 360 graderstittvinkel . Sadana tillverkas nu pa industriell/kommersiellbasis (ett 120 graders hologram kostar ca 150 dollar attframstalla) .

Multiplex optiskaprinter som medlaserljus omvand-Jarde 1.080 film-rutorna till spalt-hologram pd engenomskinlig cyl-indrisk plastfilm.

Sd hdr gdr det till att sfilmavett multiplex-hologram .

Objektet placeras pd en roterandeplattform 11 varv pd 4S sekunderl

Wikstrom/H6glund arbetar pa att forsoka fomya hologra-fins anvandning inom det fria bildskapandet, dar en avbegransningarna varit att frigora sig fran det strikt foto-grafiska avbildandet (35 mm filmkamera och sv/v-filmanvandes vid registreringen) . N "exposes" the present In electronic pictures during the jazz festival

- We want to expose, not call off'.So the artists Ture Sjolander and 8ror Wikstrom say, of current interest as theyare for the coming jazz festival within the Festival of Stockholm. Some timeduring the three days of the jazz festival (Sept 16-18) the two pictureexperimenters' new film is shown on TV. It is ready made for TV with theapparatus of the TV and with the basic function of the TV before one's sight.

Some year ago Sj6londer-Wikstrom brought about a sensation by

exposing pictures on ad-palings In Stockholm . If you had something todisplay you shouldn't fence It in, neither In the museums nor among theprivate collectors, but expose it where people are to be found, theythought. So consequently they have chosen the biggest medium ofcommunication, TV, for their latest exhibition.

SJ$Ionder-Wkstrom are fully conscious of the topicalness of today,another reason for choosing TV. What else can be more actual than to

demonstrate the formal possibilities of TV, and what else can be more

actual than to mirror the present while you are demonstrating these formal

possibilities?

"Scanner" re-Interprets

"Time" is the name of the exhibition, which is based upon variousactualities that Sjolander-Wikstrom have come across during the spring, forInstance "Gemini" and foetal-pictures. The main part is taken up by the verymuch to the fore avant-garde jazz-musician Don Cherry and his quintet atthe Golden Circle.

The pictures are run through a specially built "scanner", an apparatusthat in the ordinary cases Is producing 'real' pictures, but which in thissensitized state is "re-interpreting" what the camera has seen, and thus iscreating new pictures . The technicians and the artists have decided whatthe apparatus looks like, and the apparatus has decided what the pictureslook like .

The present is reflected

Consequently the couple Sj6londer-Wikstrom is demonstrating aphenomenon that is very much up to date just now, the electronic machine-

picture, The Korean Nam June Poik is for the moment sitting at the radio andis working with similar filings. He will show his result at the festival of Fylkingen"Visions of the present" . But this will take place one week after SJ6landerWikstrOms' demonstration on TV. (Sic! The translator's comm.)

Thank you very much for your letter that I received some three weeks ago.Since then I hove done some research, more particularly in my drawers andelsewhere in more or less forgotten hiding-places. To my great pleasure, which Ihope also will be yours, I actually found some material which I am puttingtogether just now: newspaper articles, pictures from my installation at GalleryMaxim 27/1 1966 - I had prepared the installation during the last three months 1965.(I enclose a translation of the review in Svenska Dagbladet written by Ulf Hbrd ofSegerstod) .

At that time Ture SJBlander came to the gallery and we started acooperation, video-experiments, after my own concepts and intentions . More orless a development of the installation . I can give you further information about thiscollaboration, which eventually emerged into the electronical experiment IM.The result appeared in the Swedish television - 15 minutes in Nils Petter Sundgrensfilm review . If you are interested, l con dispatch one tape of this event (VHS).

Furthermore I have kept a colour-experiment, a five-minute moveableinformal painting (electronic painting) which was performed in 1969. The paintingwas mode ready by using on electronic scanner.

Maybe it also could be of some interest for you to know that I worked upelectronic holograms in 360 degrees by using colour synthesizer. At the same timeI made holograms in the holograms, two holograms into one. This was 1977 . 1keep a tape of these electronic experiments as well .

This moterial Is available. Let me Just add that 1 later, 1979 1 think, made asynthetic hologram at the electronic studio EMS, by using their big computer forelectronic music . The motive was a deformed spiral that was repeated so far asto give the spectator an impression of a planet vaguely moving, like a yam-bailthat unwinds itself and goes together, expansion and implosion.

transmission, the artist struck In.In the above exchange of words, which is just to some extent fictitious,

the artist is the same, while his discussion partner alternates . The talks are

taking place at Gallery Maxim, where you consequently for the moment

can get an as unusual as Instructive lesson In moving on very thin ice as what

"art" is concerned.The exhibitor, Bror Wikstr6m, has shown before that he is able to take the

consequences of an artistical initial position fully into consideration, and here

he does so properly. The exhibition Is beautifully arranged in almost a

treacherous way, It Is kept in silver and fresh-looking blue . The canvases"

are photographies taken in a photo slot machine but artfully printed in

screen, to some part in silver colour, which among other things has

bestowed upon them the special effect of the daguerreotype to be

permuted from the positive to the negative as the spectator moves. This

visual act of transformation is the key to WikstrOm's method .

Suddenly the visitor is standing In front of a laughing mirror. His grinning,

grotesque mirror-self Is caught by a TV-camera and transmitted to a number

of TV-screens In the window. The spectator is creating his own picture and

through the TV he is giving himself his spontaneous reaction of this picture. But

this is just part of one by practical economic reasons mutilated concept

concerning Wikstrbm's object in view, his purpose. The central object of the

exhibition is namely a modulated model of a mirror-room, where a number

of figures by the use of TV-cameras are multiplied and transmitted to a 'wall"

full of IV-screens, which together - if the project is realized - would give a sort

of "TV-mural painting", a constantly changing transformation, advanced

technique in the service of picture making.Here we are confronted with the "painting" which rightfully not can be

named a painting, the "canvas" with the faces which is a flapping flag, the

portraits that disappear In front of your eyes, the "photography" which is ascreen-game, the "composition" which disintegrates itself, the "artist" whobecomes identical with the spectator and who is working with a photo slotmachine or a TV-camera. Indeed, Bror Wikstr6m is putting a laughing-mirrorjust In front of our own safe faces, he is imperceptibly muddling away ourlabels for painting, photography, architecture, still-life picture, film. The wordsmust stick in the throat for everyone that is trying to verbalize his experiencesof all this by using our, all the way to the insole, worn-out and implacablyobsolete oestheticol terminology.
