Welcome to SveaSvea is a mining community with its own airport, staff canteen, accommodation, port, recreational building, power plant, workshops and a recycling station, just to mention some of the facilities. The wheels in a com munity like Svea do not go round by themselves – everyone has to contribute to ensure that the machinery functions as smoothly and as well as  possible.

In this brochure you will find information about the most important rules that apply here, how to get to and from Svea, canteen opening times, important telephone numbers, recreational activities, and other useful tips concerning the Svea community.

As the name Svea indicates, mining at the innermost end of the Van Mijen fjord was started by Swedes, and

in 1917 the Swedish company AB Spetsbergens Svenska Kolfält began mining coal in Svea. Surveys of the Braganza field began as early as 1910, and showed major coal reserves in the area.

In 1921, the Swedish State became a shareholder of the company, which changed its name to Svenska Stenaktiebolaget Spetsbergen. Following a fire, mining operations were closed down in 1925. In 1934 the Svea mine was purchased by the Norwegian company Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani AS for NOK 1 million with the Norwegian State as guarantor.

Store Norske has continued mining operations in Svea ever since – at irregular intervals and with varying results. During certain periods there has only been a guard force present. By the time the Svea Vest mine was depleted in 2000, however, we were ready to start mining in Svea Nord. This huge coalfield turned loss to profit in its first year of regular operations in 2002. From being a statesubsidised enterprise, Store Norske was now earning money from its coalmining operations.

Mining at Svea Nord is now the cornerstone of Store Norske’s business, and it is in Svea that most of the company’s approximately 350 employees work. If we include our partners LNSS and ISS, over 200 people normally work in Svea at any one time, as well as personnel from other firms periodically engaged in various projects in Svea.

TravelTo SveaThe airport bus (‘Flybussen’) from Longyearbyen departs from Funken (Spitsbergen Hotel) 35 minutes prior to takeoff. Those living in Nybyen should ring the airport bus themselves in plenty of time before departure on the days they are flying to Svea. The airport bus telephone number is 482 76 181.

The bus drives down from Funken and out onto the main road, takes the first turning to the right and into Hilmar Rekstens vei, and stops on request at roads 222, 224, 226, 228, 230 and 232. The bus then takes the road past the Radisson Blu hotel (driving up to the hotel if requested), turns left onto the main road and stops outside the entrance to the Lompensenteret building. It then proceeds onto the main road again, stops on request at Elvesletta Nord and road 238 (by the University Centre), and takes a left turn in the direction of the airport, past ISS and Store Norske’s offices. It then proceeds directly to the airport.

People with their own transport are required to be in the airport terminal at Lufttransport half an hour before the aircraft is due to depart.

From SveaBe sure to arrive at the airport terminal no later than the flight departure from Longyearbyen.

If you are engaged in shift work, your flight will be booked automatically as long as you are on a regular shift list. In the event of changes, your immediate superior will do the booking. Other personnel in Svea must book flights for themselves. The ISS booking service prefers bookings to be done by email, but you can also tele phone them.

Checking-in and baggageAll baggage must be checked in and weighed. Passengers should not expect to take with them more than eight kilograms of baggage on the same aircraft. It is not permitted to take dangerous goods such as car batteries, distress flares, propane gas canisters, etc. in your baggage. Ask the airport staff if you are in doubt. Firearms must not be loaded and must be delivered to the airport staff before departure. The bolt must be detached from the firearm.

Anyone under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substance will be refused permission to board the aircraft.

Travel using own snow scooterIf you wish to drive to and from Svea using your own snow scooter, we ask you to notify the Control Room (‘Dagstiger’) on your departure and arrival. We urge everyone travelling by snow scooter to remember to take with them the necessary safety equipment and not to travel alone. The Control Room telephone number is 79 02 54 00.

Remember to notify the ISS booking service (preferably by texting 400 10 032) so that they can register your arrival/departure.

Use the marked tracks into and out of Svea. Take care not to make undue noise, as some shift workers may be sleeping.
