SVE Active Singles ClubThe Active Singles Club was formed in

1996 to provide a place where the people who were without a companion could meet once a week for cards, games, conversation, and some fellowship that would make a difference in their lives.

Wanda Katzman met with a few people in her home and they decided there was a real

need for the kind of club that would fi ll these requirements, so the Active Singles Club was born with Wanda as the fi rst president.

Besides games nights, where a variety of cards and games are played, they make three or four visits to restaurants and other points of interest each month, with transportation being provided by members for a small

fee for the drivers. Member birthdays are always celebrated at the first monthly meeting, and get well cards are sent to those who are sick.

New members are always welcome. If you think you would enjoy this club, come give it a try at one of their get-togethers every Wednesday night at 6 PM.

NEW MEMORIAL POSTINGS

As of August 1, 2014 we have created a memorial board in the courtyard, just east of the SVE Library. This bulletin board will be dedicated to death notices of our SVE friends. If the families provide, we will post obituary notices, pictures and notices of memorial services. Due to space limitations, please condense obituary notices.

CHAPEL NOTES Richard Koerselman, SVE Chapel Pastor

Most of us can see. When driving, we keep our eyes focused far ahead so we can stay in our lane and avoid an accident. We see our eye doctor to get stronger lens so we can read better. Today one of the greatest medical “miracles” is cataract surgery. Almost overnight, we regain our sight. We all treasure our ability to see everything this world offers.

But a few people have more than physical sight. They have vision, a special ability or maybe we should call it a gift, to see something that is not out there. This story about Walt Disney, and comments from his wife, will better illustrate.

Disney World is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the planet. All of the theme parks in Florida under the Disney banner, rank among the top ten theme parks in all of the world. Over 50 million people each year walk through the turnstiles at Walt Disney World. This entertainment mecca sits on forty-three square miles, some of the most prime property in the entire state of Florida. It’s twice the size of Manhattan Island. It took seven years to plan and four and one-half years to build.

On October 1, 1971, Disney World had its grand opening. As they were having the dedication ceremony, someone turned to Mrs. Walt Disney and said, “Isn’t it a shame that Walt didn’t live to see this?” Mrs. Disney replied, “He did see it, that’s why it’s here.” Walt Disney Had The Gift of Vision. He saw what other people didn’t. And he had the fortitude and courage to see that his vision would become a reality.

Proverbs, a Biblical book full of what today we might call soundbites, has this profound verse in 29:18 in the old King James Version:

“Where there is no vision the people perish.”I think we can safely say, all successful churches,

religious organizations, and yes include all growing, secular businesses have someone or some group who has the gift of

vision in their leadership. Someone has to be out front, able to see an obstacles before they come or to seize opportunities before someone else does. One defi nition of vision is very concisely put: “Vision is foresight with insight based on hindsight.”

But vision, if it is to last, cannot only be rooted in us. We too easily succumb to tunnel vision, where we see only a distortion of the future. We need a dose of Abraham’s vision, who combined his gift of vision with an unwavering trust in God. When God called him, old man Abraham got his family together to travel to a new land, he had not seen, but he trusted God who saw it for him. Jesus demonstrated the gift of vision and trust in his father in heaven when he talked about his own death and burial: For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fi sh, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matt. 12:40. Jesus had the foresight to see his upcoming 3 day burial, the insight to know that it was only for 3 days before God would raise him from the dead, and the hindsight to know that just as God delivered Jonah from the belly of the fi sh, so God would deliver him from the grave to new life.

That kind of vision of the resurrection gave Jesus the courage to go to the cross. That kind of vision can help us pilot our way through the sometimes rough waters of life.

BOCCE BALLIt’s almost Fall and Open Bocce begins September 1,

2014. You still have time to make the 6:30 p.m. start. A few beads of sweat and a sore muscle or two may follow, but it will be good to see all the familiar faces.

On a more serious note: On behalf of the membership of the Bocce Ball Club of Sunland Village East, I wish to extend sincerest sympathy to the family of Ray Castro, particularly his wife Judy. Ray passed away August 4, 2014. Ray had been one of the pillars of the social group and had outdone himself when it came to volunteering to provide necessary services and time. He maintained the courts, grilled the burgers and approached all he contacted with a kind heart and good nature over the years. His wit and occasional joke will be missed by all.

EARLY MORNING BOBBERS

The Early Morning Bobbers have had a great summer. We have met for breakfast the fi rst week of every month. We had a luncheon for Christmas in July. We look forward for the winter visitors returning to join in the fun.

The Early Morning Bobbers would like to extend an invitation to join us Monday thru Friday at the south pool at 7:50 am for free water exercise. Everyone is invited for low impact aerobics. We have a monthly breakfast at Fat Willy’s restaurant. Any questions call Ruth, our fearless leader, 986-2862 or Karen, 703-2669.

FITNESS CLUBThe new Octane Recumbent bike has arrived. With so

many residents using the Octane, another has been paid for with resident donations. It is great to see the demand for this piece of equipment, not used just for exercise, but for rehab after knees or hips have been replaced. There are videos available for loan to show your rehab facility what we have available, and they can recommend what you can use after you have completed your physical therapy.

With all the upgrades done this past summer, we will be ready when our winter residents return. The fi tness center had its preventative maintenance check up in August, under our warranty. The wind sculpture area has been landscaped to enhance the entrance; refl ective window fi lm was applied to all the windows and doors; roller shutters have been installed on all the windows; additional stretch bands and wall brackets are in place; and an additional mirror has been added to the fl oor exercise area. These were all paid for by resident’s donations.

There is one additional piece of exercise equipment we would like to purchase. If you are in a position to help out, please make your check payable to “the Fitness Club” and mail or deliver it to the SVE HOA offi ce at 2145 S. Farnsworth Drive, Mesa, AZ 85209. All contributions will be greatly appreciated and will be honored on a future plaque. Thanks for your continued support of our great facility.

SVE SOFTBALL CLUBThe SVE Softball Club will hold their pre-fall

organizational and scheduling managers meeting on October 8th in the Saguaro Room at 3:30 pm. Although the meeting is primarily for team managers, all residents interested in participating in softball activities are invited to attend.

Gordon Smith. 380-0878.

Tennis TalkDiana Roskuski

During the hot summer months, most of the play is during the cooler morning and evening hours. Come up to the courts and start a conversation with one of our friendly players. There are usually several summer groups, and the coordinators always welcome new players. Open “round robin” play is on Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 7-8:30 a.m. on Court 1.

As Fall approaches, SVE Tennis Club members are tuning up their play for League matches, which begin on Monday, November 3rd. Since teams will be set in October, members will be asked to respond to an email in mid-September with their estimated arrival date in Mesa and current playing status (healthy or on “injured reserve”). Free instruction resumes in the Fall.

If you are new in the Village and would like to play next season in League, contact Roger Betts 480-319-9036 or [email protected]

From active.com web site, I’d like to paraphrase some mental toughness tips by Paul Gold. He says “you don’t just wake up one day mentally tough! It is something that needs to be learned and honed regularly. Place yourself in pressure situations on a regular basis. You need to know what it’s like to be in a tight match and lose as well as win. You need to have come back when you were well behind. You also need to lose when you were well ahead.

These experiences will make you stronger and give you an edge over less experienced players. Seek out opportunities to challenge yourself mentally, to learn about yourself and your coping mechanisms. You can incorporate pressure into your practice; i.e., play a set where you as a team only have one serve on service games or start each game 30-0 down, etc.”

2015 SUNLAND VILLAGE EAST TELEPHONE DIRECTORY

The deadline for additions and changes to the 2015 SVE Directory is September 30, 2014. Please stop by the HOA offi ce and complete a Directory Information form prior to this date. This deadline will not be extended.

For many years, GV Publications published our directory at no cost to the association. We received a commission from advertising. However, this company is no longer able to accommodate us.

We have signed a contract with Ironwood, a publishing company based in Tempe to publish our 2015 SVE directory – our 30th edition! We are excited to work with this company.

In an effort to save money we will be downsizing the directory. Many of the “general information” pages will be removed. Copies of these pages will be available in the display racks in the association offi ce for those residents who would like them. Additionally, we will no longer list the residents “occupation’ in the directory; the rest of your information will remain the same.

We will strive to provide residents the 2015 directory within the fi rst few months of the new year.

DOGS ‘R US

B J ‘s Stor as told by Jan and Bill DavisHis registered name is Mr. Bo Jangles, but we’ve always

called him BJ. When our beloved Shih Tzu died suddenly, we spent several weeks grieving. We were lost without him. We began to search the Internet for both rescue dogs and breeders. We found a breeder in N. Phoenix who had two pups, three weeks old. We immediately went to her home to make our choice, not knowing that all Shih Tzus have black fur when born. We brought BJ home at 6 weeks old. He was welcomed at the Carriage Manor pet area with a huge party...about 30 people and 17 dogs!

This time WE were going to be in charge. What a joke! From the start he trained us to his preferences. He is now 12 ½ years old and still running the show. When he wants something, he will fi x an unyielding stare on us until we fi gure out what his little heart desires.

Probably the hardest part about caring for him is his lack of interest in food. He has been eating “people food” most of his life and would rather not eat at all if dog food is his choice. The only treats he likes are Snaps and Pupperoni. The rest he treats with great disdain. He dislikes dog beds and sleeps wherever he wants.

Dogs do not interest him. He hates the habit of “butt sniffi ng” and has never done that himself. He is truly one-of-a-kind. He can be exasperating but is always such a loveable little rascal!”

The Arizona Humane Society has three Thrift Stores, one in Tempe and two in Phoenix. All purchases are tax-free, and 100% of the proceeds benefi t the homeless animals of AHS. They will pick up donations of new or gently-used clothes, furniture, or other household items daily during business hours (minimum 2 bags/boxes of clothes/items). To arrange a pick up, call 480-290-0587 or email [email protected] Every purchase or donation helps provide food, shelter and medical attention for the pets.

RED HATSWow, it’s September already. For those of us who are

winter residents, we hope you had a very nice summer and will soon be joining us again. Time does fl y! For those of us who endured the summer heat here in SVE, we say, bravo, we did it again. The days are getting shorter, kids are back in school, vacations are over and the activity calendars are starting to fi ll up with many great things to do.

We Dazzling Desert Dolls Red Hat ladies will be dusting off our red hats, hunting up our tea cups and will meet again on September 24th for our monthly tea to greet and visit with our friends and neighbors. We meet the fourth Wednesday of the month in the Mesa Verde Room at 9:30 a.m. Please bring your tea cup and tea bag. Cookies will be furnished. Guests are welcome and for further information, contact Ruth Weston, 480-247-9928.

SUNLAND STITCHERSFreda Klein

We have been to lunch at Red Robin for a change of pace after all the quilting this month.

The kits we have laid out for our construction are moving smoothly to completion and will be layered later.

We, and the entire community, were saddened by the passing of Ben Comer, husband of quilter Sue Comer. Eight of us attended the memorial service that was very impressive and well attended.

Bev Hasslinger has inspired several quilters with an easy table runner from scraps and a center focal point. Finding all the materials in our stash will build our inventory for the craft show. Belva Bull visited with us last month and it was nice to catch up with her. Adrienne Lander brought in a bright purple scrap quilt that she found in her stash.

Joyce Notch and husband brought in a beautiful quilt top that needed space to layer. Joanne Martinek and Flo Young helped them to get the backing laid out and secured to the tables, added the batting and then placed the top over that. Lastly, they pinned the layers in readiness for hand quilting by Joyce.

Very quiet here, we keep hoping for rain but not much comes this way. We are lucky though that we have avoided any damage from monsoon storms, so far.

Helen is back from visit to family in Kansas and she is ready to teach again. Those children are lucky to have her.

SUNSATIONALS TAP DANCE CLUB

Glenda GearhartSeptember is here and the Sunsationals are back at

work trying to remember all those tap steps that we have forgotten over the summer. Our teacher, Stephani, will have to work very hard with us (as usual) on tap routines that we perform for our 2015 Dance Revue “Sunsationals Celebrating 25 Years of Dance”. The costumes are almost done for our publicity pictures. Another great job by our costume committee!

Our New Member Meeting will be on October 29th and fall classes will start on November 4, 2014. If any of you are interested in learning to Tap Dance please call Alicia Hall, 354-7151, and she will give you all the information. Have a Special September and KEEP SMILING!

Treasurer’s Report – Ed Zarr On the Statement of Operations, the total

revenue year to date is $763,190.56 which is above budget by $120,709.12. The capital contribution for May was $10,500.00 which is above budget for the year by $29,500.00. The total Year to date revenue from Capital Contribution is $53, 250 which remarkably is only $3,750 away from the annual amount projected for the 2014 budget.

In May, retail sales revenue was $254.00; commission revenue is $1,171.11; other miscellaneous revenue is $273.13. All of these income categories are above budget. The Bingo Revenue is at $12,043.00 which is also above budget. Administrative, payroll, pool, scheduled maintenance, activities and utilities expenses are under budget for the month of May. The Year to date payroll expenses is under budget by $41,530.02 and utilities expenses are under budget by $4,555.75. Bingo expenses include winning payouts, supplies and donations. The year to date net income after expenses is a positive $83,628.44 for Operations; this fi gure does include the Bingo expenses, and the monthly reserve allocation. We

anticipate receiving our completed annual audit in the near future. On the Reserve & Capital Fund Statement, there was the monthly budgeted reserve allocation of $10, 210.00 and a Capital Contribution of $10,500.00. The bank accounts and investments are reconciled. As for expenses, to date $45,000 has been spent on the Mesa Verde Parking Lot construction. In addition in May, we spent $24, 263.72 on the Key Card/Camera Security System. There is a year to date negative net income of $403.48 for the reserve/capital statement. As of May 31, 2014, for the operations, there is a balance in the bank accounts and investments of approximately $954,000. In addition, the reserve/capital balance in the bank accounts is $768,001.94.

Security Report – John HewittOpen garage doors, 106---no more narrative.

It does no good. Security saw several rabbits, skunks, packs of foxes. Did escorts for singles and bingo. Several nights, fans, lights left on/back door left unlocked at south fi tness center. Lights on, door unlocked at new massage room, auditorium door unlocked. Five golf carts driving with no lights (give a little input on this). Still lots of RV’s motor homes and trailers. One night about 2:15 a.m., there was a drive by shooting by pellet gun of rear window of the parked security car in offi ce parking lot. Our video surveillance caught some of it, but not for the street though. Many walkers and joggers wearing dark clothes during evening hours. Two security cameras were stolen at the Palo Verde Building around 1:00 a.m. one evening. The incident was reported to Mesa Police. Please keep your garage doors closed and homes secure. Architectural Report – Jack Grove

During the month of May, 9 homes and 5 condos changed ownership. 15 ACC requests were approved, 2 violations letters were sent out.

Manager’s Report – Lisa TitmasA BIG thank you to Bobbie Hughes, Sharon

Schwarz, Linda Gerken, Colleen Karnick, Lee Sorenson, Marlene Wood, and Betty Wrigley. These ladies comprised a decorating team for SVE for the past 8 years. A simple “Thank You” hardly seems enough. They deserve recognition for their work, so why not take the time to thank each of these ladies for their contribution to SVE.

The Mesa Verde Parking Lot is now open. There are 3 trees currently located on the west side of the fi tness building that need to be relocated to the area between the golf cart parking area and the bocce ball courts.

Padding for the metal door handles that are directly affected by the summer sun will be installed on the handles soon.

Both the maintenance supervisor Ted Ferrell

and I are doing a walk-through of all common area facilities. We have started in the Mesa Verde Room. We’re making a list of items both inside and out that need to be repaired, touched up or replaced.

Over 400 fi tness codes have been downloaded. The generic code will be updated on a monthly basis as will additional homeowner codes. An alternative to getting a code is to use a key card to get into the pool area and enter through the fi tness building door on the North side of the pool. No swimsuits or wet clothing are allowed in the fi tness facilities.

Maintenance rented a lift and cleaned the inside of the tennis court lights. An attempt was made to use the lift to clean the shuffl eboard lights as well. However, the lift didn’t fi t into the shuffl eboard gate. A ladder will be used instead.

North spa jets are currently being worked on. The jet located on the east side of the spa and was spraying up and out of the spa, but is now repaired. The chemicals are now balanced and the stain that was causing much concern is gone. As a result of the maintenance staffs due diligence, at this time there is no plan to tear the bowl out of the spa and do major remodeling. This saves the association $10,000 which was budgeted for 2014.

The north offi ce complex roof project has been put on hold until the Fall. With last years’ auditorium roof surprise there was great concern to rush out and repair all the roofs. After the contractors put a bid in on the roof at the north complex our current maintenance supervisor Ted Ferrell and past supervisor Mike LaGrange got up in the attics and inspected the roofs and structure. They determined that while there was some shifting in the tiles and air vents, the vents could easily be moved and resealed. The major problem is over the breezeway outside the bathrooms. Over the summer this area will be repaired. We hope after this repair that the entire roof doesn’t need to be replaced, and will potentially save the association over $90,000 budgeted for 2014. We will however readdress the roof in its entirety after the monsoon season and if necessary send the roof project out to bid again. Contractor’s bids are only good for 60-90 days.

The ceramics kiln room is being repainted and tiled. The cost of this project was allocated in the 2014 budget.

As mentioned in the past, all clubs, groups and activities who wish to request money from the association for 2015 projects, should get the requests in before October of this year. Your requests will be given serious review and

consideration.Land Acquisition Committee members:

Wayne Berg, Bob Zimmerman, Roy Sager and Lisa Titmas

President’s Report – Linda CerfAt the special meeting on May 14th it was agreed

that the fi tness club had 4-5 weeks to collect all of the required funds to install roller shutters on the south fi tness center. Also at this meeting it was determined that the fi tness committee was no longer required and was disbanded.

On May 22nd another special meeting was held with the announcement of the possible acquisition of 2 acres of land located in the RV Storage Lot. Manager Lisa Titmas was given authority to form a committee to research and pull together all of the needed documentation. This is a great opportunity for SVE as we are currently land locked. This will open many future recreation options.

– John Hewitt briefed the project is now complete. In November 2013 the projected 2014 budget for the parking lot was $68,000. In 2014, it was determined that concrete should be used instead of asphalt and the fi nal amount approved by the Board of Directors for the Mesa Verde Parking Lot project in March 2014 was $90,834.00. Ed Zarr motioned for the Board of Directors to approve an additional $30,000 be repurposed on paper (from SVE Capital Contribution Fund to the Capital Project Fund) to cover the complete cost of the bid. SUNLAND VILLAGE EAST ASSOCIATION SVE BOARD OF DIRECTOR’SSPECIAL MEETINGJune 17, 2014, 1:00 p.m.Saguaro RoomMeeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m.Board Members Present: Linda Cerf, Arden Freeman,

John Hewitt, Jack Grove, Bill Randall, Ed Zarr and Manager Lisa Titmas; Excused - Richard Peterson

Vice President Cerf called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m.Vice President Cerf stated the meeting was to clarify a

motion that was made at the Board of Director’s Meeting on June 12, 2014. On June 12, 2014, the board made a motion to approve the repurposing of $30,000 from the SVE Capital Contribution Fund to the Capital Project Fund. The SVE auditor has stated that while it’s common practice in HOAs and other businesses to repurpose money from one capital account to another, the Association cannot do that as

our documents clearly outline what the Capital Contribution Fund can be used for. With that clarifi cation, I’d like a member of the board to make a motion to amend the motion as approved on June 12, 2014.

Arden Freeman motioned for the SVE Board of Directors amend the motion made on June 12, 2014 concerning transfer of funds for payment of the Mesa Verde Parking Lot project to read as follows: “A motion was made for the SVE Board of Directors to approve $30,000 to be repurposed on paper from SVE Operating Accounts to the Capital Project Fund to cover the complete cost of the Mesa Verde Parking Lot bid.”

John Hewitt seconded. Yeas - Linda Cerf, Bill Randall, Jack Grove, John Hewitt, Ed Zarr, and Arden Freeman. No Nays. Passed

Further clarifi cation was made by SVE Accountant Denise Wilson – this is not a paper transfer, but a monetary transfer

from operating to Capital [Project Fund] and will show on the reserve statement to pay the excess cost.

Vice President Cerf asked for another motion to amend the previous motion to take out the phrase “repurposed on paper” to repurpose [transfer] money from the operating fund to the Capital Project Fund. Arden Freeman motioned to amend the motion restating the motion to read as follows: A motion was made for the SVE Board of Directors to approve $30,000 to be repurposed [transferred] from SVE Operating Accounts to the Capital Project Fund to cover the complete cost of the Mesa Verde Parking Lot bid. John Hewitt seconded. Yeas - Linda Cerf, Bill Randall, Jack Grove, John Hewitt, Ed Zarr, and Arden Freeman. No Nays. Passed
