Part I: Overview

We came together at the end of 2014 after we made some assessments about our recycling processes. We found out that we generated more recycables than waste and began to formulate a plan. We were very new at this initiative so we reached out to our sister sites and any other service providers that we had relationships with to gather more information about recycling. We visited any sites we thought had a successful recycling program and attended a few sustainability conferences hoping we can reapply or bring a new idea back to our site. A simple idea about changing our recycling processes turned into a major initiative that have benefited our site, community, and the residents of Hudson County. In a little over one calendar year, the JC Sustainability Team was formed, a mission and vision statement was created, we had reduced our waste to landfill by 47%, and we have supported 8 charities/non-profit organizations with gently used clothing using our sustainability initiative as a segway to reduce, reuse, and recycle .

Part II: Accomplishments

Previous to the formation of the team, the site only had 2 waste streams: bottles and cans, and garbage. Once we identified all waste streams on site, then we explore different ways and options to handle them. We have accomplished the following: waste to landfill year to date for the last quarter was zero outlined on the chart. We took control of the waste services and reduced cost by managing our scheduling pickups removing the automatic pickups. This resulted in a reduction of our waste services cost YTD by 68%. We created teams for different concerns using our LSS (Lean Six Sigma) processes for our recycling initiatives and began to resolve our problems together. One was our restoration of our burner. We restored a burner in our Fleet operations and began to burn our used oil generated from inspections to reduce our natural gas cost and assist with our heating in the winter months. The comradery of our team efforts was 100% togetherness but at the beginning of 2014 it was a silo environment. We began to seek out recycling companies asking for their assistance and knowledge about recycling. We made a partnership with some of the most powerful recycling companies in America such as Sims Metal Inc. and HCIA Environment Services. We have recycled our very large forklift batteries, carrier wood compress boards, white wood broken pallets, office paper, plastics and corrugated recycables. We added new equipment such as an additional baler for our plastics and a Jersey crusher. At one point we only baled corrugated recyclables, but today we bale plastics and corrugated.

Part II: Accomplishments Con’t

Our Jersey crusher shreds our outdated juice and damaged product. It shreds the plastic and drains the juice at the same time then separates the plastic from the juice. We have learned from Waste Management and a few others how they manage their waste streams and how their recyclables are processed.

We partnered with a company based in Arizona called Steel City lumber and promised that they can have our carrier boards as long as they pick them up. Steel City lumber sent a flat truck with a tarp to pick up this very heavy load of 720 boards and its dimension of 48 X 52 used to store our pallets in our automated ware house. We recycled the compress wood carrier boards and reduced any cost associated with getting rid of them. The Jersey City Sustainability Team not only prides itself in making Hudson County a cleaner place to live, but also a better place to live. The team work with many charities and non profit organizations such as ACBC (Aluminum Cans for Burn Children) and have made donations using the aluminum cans collected on site. We collected 110 used cell phones for our veterans, and 70 used eye glasses for those less fortunate and donated them to Piscataway Wellness Clinic. We also received an award for partnering with Hudson County Transportation Management Association to help reduce the number of vehicles on the road. Since the program inception in the fall of 2014, the site has saved over 62M miles of driving equating to approximately 3, 650 gallons of gas and over 71M pounds of carbon dioxide emission reduction.

Using our internal resources PepsiCo Recycle Rally we reached out to Horace Mann Elementary School in Bayonne NJ and partnered with their Cleaner/Greener Day in June 2015. We bought trivia games, paper tossing games keeping the theme of recycling and educating the children on the importance of recycling. Finally as part of our 2015 EAW (employee appreciation week), the Sustainability Team introduced its newest charitable initiative called the 3Cs program. The 3Cs stands for Coats, Clothes, and Aluminum cans. The cans were donated to our ACBC charity, and the gently used coats and clothing were donated to Women Rising and the Salvation Army. The site also got involved with the Halloween costumes for Jersey Cares who supports children in shelters and who are less fortunate. Our future initiative is to provide a location on site to operate all recycling and waste stream processes called OSS (One Stop Shop). We are always seeking ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
