ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This publication represents a selection of the output of the IDB Private Sector Infrastructure Sustainability Awards, or the Infrastructure 360° Awards, developed by the Inter-American Development Bank in collaboration with Harvard University through the Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure. The Infrastructure 360° Awards seek to identify, assess and reward sustainable infrastructure investments made by the private sector and public private partnerships in the IDB borrowing member countries. The awards recognize outstanding sustainability practices in infrastructure investments in the region with emphasis on climate and environment, as well as leading practices in social impact, governance and innovation.
The main objective of the Infrastructure 360° Awards is to help identify, raise awareness and promote ways in which sustainable approaches by the private sector and public private partnerships in the IDB borrowing member countries can be used to plan, design, construct and operate infrastructure projects. The Infrastructure 360° Awards are the only infrastructure sustainability awards in the Americas. The first group of awardees was announced at the IDB’s Annual Meeting in Sauípe, Brazil, March 28, 2014.
Numerous people contributed to this work. We would like to express our deep gratitude to all the people we worked with at the Inter-American Development Bank, and in particular to the IDB President Alberto Moreno, Hans Schulz, Jean-Marc Aboussouan, and Ana-Maria Vidaurre-Roche for their vision, leadership and support in making this project a reality; Mohsen Mostafavi, Dean of the Graduate School of Design, Inaki Abalos, Chair of the Department of Architecture, and Patricia Roberts, Executive Dean of the GSD, for their support on making this research project a success at the GSD; Paul and Joan Zofnass for their vision and continuous support of the Zofnass program; Spiro Pollalis, director of the Zofnass program, for useful advice; the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure and its President and CEO, Bill Bertera, for support and guidance on the Envision rating system; CGLA Infrastructure and in particular Norman Anderson, Patricia Pietravalle and Jose Gras for their commitment in promoting the Awards and all their efforts through the process; the Infrastructure 360° expert panelists: Alberto Alemán, Marcela Huertas, Marty Janowitz, Georgina Kessel, Rajendra Pachauri, Marcos Siqueira, Simon Smithson, Mark Tercek, Jerry Touval; all the participants in the Infrastructure 360° project submissions and in particular the sponsoring companies of the twelve finalists: Besalco S.A., Consorcio La Chira S.A., Corporación América, EDP Energías do Brasil, EGE Haina, Gauss Energía, GyM Ferrovías S.A., Isolux Corsán, Quitport S.A., ICA, Rutas de Lima, SolarPack Corporación Tecnológica S.L.; to the sponsoring companies of the pilot case studies: AERIS and Palmatir S.A.; Cristina Contreras and Hatzav Yoffe for their commitment and hard work on the Envision assessments and case study preparations of the twelve finalists; and finally all the Harvard researchers who worked on the Infrastructure 360 projects and all the people who their work, commitment and passion made this publication a reality.

Foreword Prefacio
As an architect, I’m passionate about buildings – but in terms of sustainability, buildings are only part of the picture. You cannot look at buildings in isolation from infrastructure. This is the glue, if you like, which binds together the individual buildings – it’s about public space, it’s about systems of power, of servicing, of connections.
There are many challenges ahead. In a world which is expanding at 7% per year, with finite resources, a significant proportion of the world’s population needs infrastructure to raise its quality of life. For example, one billion people don’t have access to clean water, one-third of the world’s population does not have sanitation, one-quarter doesn’t have energy in the form of electricity. So the imperative is to raise the consumption of power in those communities so that, in turn, their standard of living rises and the

In our own work, we have tried to pioneer sustainability, in terms of communities, connections, bridges, and initiatives like the zero-carbon, zero-waste community in Masdar. We also try to draw awareness to the fact that a bridge, for example, on an epic scale can be something of beauty, it can work with the landscape – it’s not only providing shortcuts and preserving the landscape, is can also be a thing of beauty in itself.

Infrastructure is wide in its interpretation. Arguably, it includes the gateways to our cities, whether those of the past, the ports and riverways, or today’s ocean terminals or airports. There is the potential to conceive these buildings not only as gateways but also as celebrations, and as exercises in sustainability. In other words, a very large airport is infinitely more sustainable – although it is very large, it is essentially compact, because it replaces the many separate terminals.
So I would like to congratulate those who have initiated and promoted the IDB’s Infrastructure 360° Awards, which recognize infrastructure and sustainability – and I’d like to congratulate the winners for their efforts, and for their creativity.
