150 years

Approaches to sustainable development differ from industry to industry and from region to region. Together with our customers, BASF is responding to these sustainability drivers with its products and solutions.

We see three major areas in which innovations based on our chemistry will play a key role:

We create chemistry for a sustainable future

Resources, environment and climate

Dramatically rising energy demand is one of the world’s most pressing challenges. In addition, access to clean water and efficient use of resources are becoming increasingly important.

Food and nutrition

A growing world population obviously needs correspondingly more food. And it will be necessary to enhance nutrition quality.

Quality of life

Population growth and globalization present further challenges. Aspirations differ greatly from region to region and among different social groups, but there is a common ambition: people want to improve their individual quality of life.

150 years Food fortification

The human body cannot produce vitamin A by itself, so it has to be taken up via food. Unfortunately, many people in developing countries cannot regularly afford a balanced diet.

BASF’s Food Fortification Team has developed stable and cost-effective forms of vitamin A for affordable staple foods that malnourished populations depend on. This improves health, has a positive impact on education and productivity, and reduces the health costs spent within malnourished populations.

BASF products are formulated with encapsulation and antioxidants that keep the vitamin A stable over longer storage periods.

We have developed “mini laboratory” kits that allow fortified food producers and authorities to easily check the vitamin A content of foods.

BASF is engaged in public-private partnership to reduce vitamin A deficiency in over 30 developing nations.

28

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 140 to 250 million children under five are suffering from vitamin A deficiency worldwide. A lack of this vitamin can cause blindness. BASF is responding to this malnutrition problem and improving public health and quality of life through food fortification.

150 years Biodiversity Farms

Protection of biodiversity is one aspect that can improve the sustainability of farms. At the Biodiversity Farms, BASF partners with growers to show how modern farming can work symbiotically and sustainably with biodiversity.

Biodiversity is the foundation for numerous ecosystem services that are essential for human wellbeing.

Biodiversity also contributes to agriculture in key ways. Likewise, agriculture has created many new habitats and has developed varieties and strains of species that also contribute to biological diversity.

In contrast, some farming practices have the potential to remove or reduce varieties of life form. The challenge for modern farming is to foster biodiversity while maximizing the output of food for growing populations at affordable costs.

BASF is working in 10 commercial farms across six countries to explore and develop efficient farming programs that are in harmony with biodiversity.

150 years Oil and gas production

Since 2012 Wintershall has implemented a worldwide No Flaring Policy and ceased flaring during all routine operations, thus saving around 2 million tons of CO2 every year. This voluntary commitment far exceeds statutory requirements and is unique in the industry.

Water is often injected into crude oil reservoirs to improve recovery. If this water is thickened with BASF’s Schizophyllan, it can displace more oil, increasing the recovery factor from a reservoir by up to 10%.

We take comprehensive measures to restore natural habitats in areas where we have constructed plants or pipelines, aiming to leave no trace once work has been completed

By 2020, we want to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from the transport of natural gas by 10%.

42

BASF is the only major chemical company with its own oil and gas operations. We work constantly to minimize the environmental impact of this business and to use resources with optimum efficiency.

150 years Wind energy

In rotor blades: Baxxodur® is used to produce highly resilient, fiber-reinforced blades. It helps reduce cycle time by 30%, hence saving energy during production. Structural foams like Kerdyn® inside the rotor blades improve stability and durability. We also offer RELEST® Wind coating systems to protect the blades.

In towers and foundations: BASF concretes and admixtures provide special grouts with the requisite strength for the connection between the tower and base to support turbines that can weather any storm. The larger turbines become, the more crucial this long-lasting connection is.

In gearboxes: Our hydraulic fluids (ProEco®) and gear lubricants (Emgard®) shield against wear and pitting, and consist of 50% renewable raw materials. They are more economical because they last longer than traditional petroleum-based products.

For repairs: All of BASF’s contributions aid in ensuring the long and effective life of wind turbines, reducing the need for maintenance and shutdowns. When repairs to coatings are needed, our all-in-one RELEST® Wind RepKit makes the job easier, quicker and cheaper to achieve onsite, even when turbines are located at sea.

Wind turbines have to run efficiently and safely under harsh conditions for lengthy periods of time, withstanding the sun, rain, hail, snow, and of course, wind. BASF products are used from the base to blades of turbines to help achieve this.

150 years Solar energy

BASF heat storage systems use sodium nitrate to effectively store solar energy and allow it to be used when needed – so power supplies do not run short when there is no sunlight.

Oppanol® is used in special sealant formulations to protect the active components of solar panels, helping them to last longer.

BASF’s Basotect® is a flexible foam made from melamine resin. It offers long-term temperature stability and low thermal conductivity. As it contains no mineral fiber it is easy to handle.

BASF’s plastic Ultramid® is used in mounting systems for solar installations.

Our portfolio of heat and light stabilizers and UV filters make sure that the plastics used to house solar installations are able to stand up to long outdoor exposure.

44

Solar energy products need to work better and be available more cheaply in order to compete with traditional energy sources. BASF is helping to make this happen with innovations that are applied in homes, offices and power plants.
