Appropriate Technologies

• Define the following terms; using the internet to find 3 good descriptions for each (cite each website you use)• Sustainable development• Appropriate technology• Triple bottom line sustainability

Sustainable Development

• “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” UN - http://www.un.org/esa/sustdev/

Appropriate Technologies• That is designed with special consideration to the

environmental, cultural, social and economic aspects of the community it is intended for

• Typically requires fewer resources

• Is easier to maintain• Has a lower overall cost

• Less of an impact on the

environment

Triple Bottom Line Technology

• This idea proposes that an organisation's license to operate in society comes not just from satisfying stakeholders through improved profits (the economic bottom line), but by improving its environmental and social performance also

• As such, it encompasses environmental responsibility, social awareness and economic profitability

Examples of Appropriate Technology

• Hybrid Vehicles• The hybrid vehicle typically achieves

greater fuel economy than conventional internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs), such that fewer air pollution emissions are generated per kilometre travelled.

• In addition noise emissions are reduced, particularly at idling and low operating speeds

Examples of Appropriate Technology

• Wind-up torches• Based on the innovative idea

from British inventor, Trevor Baylis. ‘The Clockwork Radio’ 1994

• When you crank the handle, you run a small generator which charges an internal battery or capacitor. The battery or capacitor then provides power for your device.

Examples of Appropriate Technology

• Solar cooking• Ovens that heat food

using only sunlight• Since they use no fuel and

they cost nothing to run• humanitarian

organizations are promoting their use worldwide to help slow deforestation caused by the need for firewood used to cook

Solar Cooker Practical Task• Working in groups of 5/6 student

(combination of graphics and food students). You are going to research design, and make a solar cooker, and finally test and evaluate its success at boiling water and cooking a savoury dish

• You will be given a basic set of materials to start with, which you can adapt and develop

Page 10: Sustainable Development Appropriate Technologies

Solar Cooker Practical Task

• You are to allocate roles within the group and delegate tasks. Recording, research, ideas, decisions, etc.

• Use video and photography to record your work and create a visual diary of making, with notes and annotation (video, PowerPoint, sketchbook)
