These are all DRAFTS that need to be discussed and defined again during the partner meeting

1. Back ground• To much emissions and oil consumption.

• Lisbon and Goteborg agenda’s.

• Oil addiction, need to explore alternatives.

• Conservative stakeholders in Sea transport.

• Prejudices about sailing solutions.

• Hybrid sailing entrepreneurs with ready to market solutions.

• Individual hybrid sailing initiatives, enough critical mass? Many

statements about feasibility but are they valid?

• Fragmented knowledge and expertise about hybrid sailing amongst

public and private players.

2. Aims and objectives“Joined North Sea Region-Australian development and operation

of competitive sustainable hybrid sailing concepts by clustering,

exploring and building new complementary strategic public-

private alliances, R&D and promotion”.

Objectives:

1. Accessible research results for investors and operators, benchmarking hybrid

sailing concepts in relation to different contexts. (e.g. costal- or ocean going).

2. Hybrid sailing concepts are accessible; promoted and introduced, to the relevant

stakeholders, they are aware of Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.

Shop windows for investors.

3. Hybrid sailing concepts are improved in business- and technical perspective due to

SAIL networking and development.

4. First steps are made to harmonise and implement cross-border fiscal incentives to

incentivise low carbon shipping.

5. Clustering and building public-private networks amongst hybrid sailing leading to

new business alliances. Organised capacity building about hybrid sailing concepts.

3: Work packages

• Work package 1, inventory and benchmark:• Inventory and benchmark of hybrid sailing concepts, what are their

characteristics in relation to different contexts? Sail Supply Chain

Mapping tool. (like power cluster) http://mapping.power-cluster.net/

• Work package 2, business cases:• Development of different competitive business cases for hybrid sailing

concepts with relevant stakeholders. Including market research,

stakeholder analysis and marketing strategies. E.g. Fair trade marks.

• Work package 3, incentives low carbon shipping: • Developing, harmonising and implementing a cohesive cross-border fiscal

incentives to incentivise low carbon shipping. How to meet the EEDI

Energy Efficiency Design Index from www.imo.org with hybrid sailing.

3: Work packages

• Work package 4, private-public alliances:• Clustering and building public-private networks, business alliances

(Europe-Australia) for hybrid sailing. Impact: Building and operating at

least one hybrid sailing ship.

• From contact to contract. B to B speed date events, like power cluster.

their hinterlands.

• Work package 5, mainstreaming, dissemination:• Conferences, excursions, tools for transnational exchange. Set up of

expert centre for hybrid sailing concepts exchanging expertise.

• Lobbying to relevant stakeholders.

http://www.fh-kiel-gmbh.de German: R&DCenterUniversity of Applied Science Kiel. We are the subsidiary of the FH Kiel University of Applied Sciences Kiel. At the University we have an institute for shipping with 4 Professors. In fact esp. in the area of sailing drivers for bulker we have carried out a lot of activities (see example enclosed).

We can attend esp. in WP1 and WP2. We have several industrial partners which also might join the project.

Please inform yourself at following homepages:www.yru-kiel.de www.schiffbau.fh-kiel.de www.fh-kiel-gmbh.de

www.saillog.de : German: Plans for ships, concepts. Their main interests are in square-rigged sails, marketing and market conditions and fiscal backgrounds. Electro-powered vessels and stay-sail riggings are not our interests. A project for operation with a patented technology for large wind ships (square-riggers) designed for bulk cargo trade. The ships will also be fitted with solar-energy equipment, besides their automated sail-rigging. The Loading capacity is between20.000 to 70.000 tons. The ships are comparable with speed and costs to modern bulk carriers. Operation area: world wide.We are retired shipping people (a master mariner and a financial manager) with vast worldwide experience in the operation of bulk vessels and financial management of shipping companies. Furthermore, motivated by the ever increasing bunker costs and recent environmental concerns also in shipping, we have worked on the problem of a more sustainable vessel operation. Contrary to cars, train and planes a vessel can simply -set sail!

Sub partner German. (mr.Volker Matthias) www.hzg.deWith respect to SAIL, we think we could do the following things:

-Estimate the emissions that would be prevented if a certain number and type of ships would use one or the other sailing technique

-Calculate the improvements in air quality which result from that (concentration maps of SO2, NO2, particles in the atmosphere)

-Review the wind fields in the North Sea region, today and in a future climate, with respect to wind speeds that are necessary to efficiently use sailing

techniques.
