Sustainability Management Plan 2016 – Updated March 2016 Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach

1.0 Analysis Tourism is one of the world's largest industries. Amongst the seven Emirates of the UAE, Dubai is the second largest and most politically stable. The UAE’s main focus remains on developments, rather than on interfering in the political issues of the region. The UAE, therefore, will continue to benefit from the regional political unrest. More than 5.5 million tourists visited Dubai in the first half of 2013, representing an 11.1% year-on-year increase, indicating that DTCM’s vision of 20 million visitors in 2020 will be achieved. In addition to this capacity and growth, the tourism industry faces greater challenges. Potential impacts include harm to the environment, society and local economies of tourist destinations around the world, and awareness and actions about these concerns are on the rise within the tourism industry. The Sustainable Tourism Criteria are to help the tourism industry define its stance on sustainable tourism and take a leading address in customer concerns about sustainable tourism practices. Through this initiative, businesses that are taking steps to sustainability will be recognised for their efforts. Those that are interested in sustainability can use the criteria and their sources provided on how to implement such sustainable practices. Sustainable tourism is of growing interest to travellers and increasingly becoming a distinguishing factor that travellers use when researching and booking a trip. International organisations and businesses continue to lead the movement to support the industry and government in adopting and implementing sustainable tourism principles and best management practices. The following definition provided by J. Swarbrooke (1999) is one that accentuates the needs of the industry and the sustainable use of its resources: “Sustainable tourism is tourism that is economically viable, but does not destroy the resources on which the future of tourism will depend, notably the physical environment and the social fabric of the host community.” Green Globe Partnership Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is one of the largest hotel groups to commit to Green Globe certification for all its properties worldwide. With the new partnership, we underpin our ambition to set an example for the industry. The strategy is part of a company-wide programme to establish a common and global approach to environmental, social and employee sustainability. Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts aims to set a new benchmark for sustainability, by committing to a certification partnership with the internationally acclaimed Green Globe.

Our aim at Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach is to maintain our compliance with the Green Globe indicators.

Sustainability Management Plan 2016 – Updated March 2016 Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach

About Green Globe The origin of Green Globe can be traced back to the United Nations Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992, where 182 heads of state from around the world endorsed the Agenda 21 principles of sustainable development. Two years later, the Green Globe membership was established. The Green Globe brand represents the best in sustainable practice within the travel and tourism sector, and provides certification, training and marketing services in 83 countries. For more information, visit www.greenglobe.com. 2.0 Sustainability Criteria A. B. Hotel’s Key Strategic Objectives for the Next Year 1. Environmental Sustainability

By nature, the hospitality industry is a large consumer of resources. Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach aims to reduce and optimise its consumption through certain energy efficient measures, such as LED lighting, water savers, and a well-controlled waste management and chemical use.

• Apply environmental awareness to its purchasing practices. The focus is to reduce the company's carbon emissions by favouring local products and suppliers requiring minimum transportation. In parallel, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts w i l l combine waste management and purchasing practices, by selecting suppliers that offer reduced packaging options.

The use of environment-friendly, biodegradable alternatives also helps create safer environments for Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts employees, guests and the local communities.

• Measure, target and monitor progress as part of a monthly reporting at the hotel level.

• Control and reduce energy consumption through daily monitoring and by improving technical and behavioural awareness.

5.0 Procedures This procedure establishes the guidelines by which the programme for the protection of the environment in which we operate shall be carried through two levels. A. Hotel level B. Employee level

A. Hotel Level

Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach will take the following approach: • Form an employee "Voice Committee" to discuss about the sustainability programme on a

monthly basis. • Use only environmentally sound guest supplies and amenities. • Consider purchasing only from certified suppliers, if the process is comparable /acceptable. • Set development cooperation with “green and environment-friendly” local farms and inform

guests about it. • Use wherever possible only organically grown vegetables and fruits in the hotel kitchen and

support suppliers/farmers who organically grow vegetables and fruits. • Use recycled papers, tissues, toilet papers and printed materials, wherever available at

competitive prices. • At each opportunity, consider using retrofit, environmentally sound and energy-saving devices,

subject to appropriate ROI. • Prefer using renewable energy, whenever applicable and available. • Enlist guest support for environment-friendly activities through PR actions. • Participate in community projects and drive environmental awareness by sharing the

knowledge and experience, as well as volunteer in awareness campaigns for different sectors of community, such as schools and colleges.

Sustainability Management Plan 2016 – Updated March 2016 Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach

B. Employee Level

We have 292 employees working in the property, 56 of which are part of management whilst 236 are non-management. • Encourage employees to influence community decisions towards an environment-friendly

approach. • Spread information about the necessity for separated garbage collection. • Encourage employees to also adopt an environment-friendly approach at home. 6.0 Environment Plans & Actions A. Ensure Environmentally Responsible Management Environmental protection is the responsibility of hotel management. When business management is environmentally aware, this will motivate the entire hotel employees and their associated business partners, customers and suppliers in return, creating a new way to think and act in a more environmentally responsible manner. This process requires the time, conviction and commitment of managers and leaders at all levels of management. Actions • Inform and involve employees about all the measures we implement and all aspects of

environmental protection. • Provide employees with further training in environmental matters, encouraging them to

participate more significantly and be more sensitive towards environmental protection goals. • Include our customers and guests in our environmental protection measures, since they are

our conscience, involving them if needed and when possible to develop the environmental concept within our business, as well as examining and implementing their ideas and suggestions.

B. Achieve measurable results Environmentally aware business management is not just a question of fashion and frugality, but rather a prerequisite to future business growth. Over the next few years, we want to achieve tangible successes in the following areas: Actions • Conserving energy through our saving plans to reuse, reduce and control with the help of our

business partners from Avireal ME for hotel optimisers; • Reducing energy consumption by replacing all halogen bulbs with LED bulbs in guest

corridors, guest rooms and public areas, to reduce power consumption; • Installing water-saving aerators in guest rooms and public toilets, as well as built-in water-

saving shower heads in all guest rooms.

Sustainability Management Plan 2016 – Updated March 2016 Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach

C. Providing reliable information By providing concise and reliable information to our guests, suppliers and the general public, we intend to report on our environmental initiatives whenever these are worth mentioning, because they are over and above the usually expected measures. Actions • Regular updates for our website and internal and external collaterals • Regular updates for local newspapers and magazines

7.0 Waste Management Plan The hotel industry generates various types and large quantities of waste daily that require adequate management. This year, our hotel generated a total of 45,187 kg of recycled wastes and 1,291,924 kg of organic and other general wastes. However, the amount of generated wastes in 2013, 2014 and 2015 combined is high, due to hotel renovations and projects; so our target for this year is to reduce total wastes generated by 1%, by focusing on the following steps. Solid wastes Hazardous and non-hazardous solid wastes are normally generated during construction and operational phases. Non-hazardous waste materials normally include paper and cardboard items, glass, aluminium products, plastic items, organic wastes, building materials and furniture, and used oils and fats. On the other hand, hazardous wastes may include batteries, florescent tube light, solvents, paints, antifouling agents and some packaging wastes. Several principles of waste reduction in hotel facilities shall be considered as part of a formal waste management plan, which includes but not limited to the following: • Buying in bulk quantities whenever possible; • Using refillable, bulk dispensers (e.g. toiletries) rather than individually packaged products; • Working with suppliers to limit use of and establish recycling for product packaging; • Avoiding use of polystyrene foam in all operations; • Providing in-room recycling procedures and appropriate receptacles located in each floor back

of house; • Using glasses or durable plastics instead of disposable plastic items (e.g. straws, cups); and • Disposing waste materials only after all waste prevention and recycling strategies have been

explored and maximised.

The waste management plan includes the role of each and every staff member of the hotel in carrying out the prescribed recycling practices in their work area, wherever possible.

Sustainability Management Plan 2016 – Updated March 2016 Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach

7. a. Garbage category • Dry waste (paper, plastic and aluminium) • Wet garbage • Glass garbage • Waste oil (kitchen and engineering) • Metal garbage • Wood garbage • Hazardous waste

Sustainability Management Plan 2016 – Updated March 2016 Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach

Offices and administration: • Recycling of papers

• Printing on both sides of a paper Engineering and technical services: • Controlling and measuring emissions and effluents out from the property. • Measuring carbon footprints. • Recycling and disposing hazardous wastes, as per DM norms • Cleaning grease traps twice a month, as per DM norms 7. c. Details on the waste removal companies: • General waste and recycling: as per our AMC contract agreement with Dulsco Waste

Management Service, all the general and recycled wastes are measured and recorded by them.

• Grease trap cleaning: as per our AMC contract agreement with Eco Environmental Services, grease traps will be cleaned twice a month.

7. d. Interesting Facts about Recycling • Recycling one ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of

water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 2 barrels of oil and 4,100 kilowatt-hours of electricity — enough energy to power the average American home for five months.

• Recycling paper instead of making it from new materials generates 74% less air pollution and uses 50% less water.

• Producing recycled paper requires about 60% of the energy used to make paper from virgin wood pulp.

• Recycling aluminium saves 95% of the energy needed to produce new aluminium from raw materials. Energy saved from recycling one ton of aluminium is equal to the amount of electricity an average home uses over 10 years.

• Recycling aluminium can save enough energy to run a 100-watt bulb for 20 hours, a computer for three hours or a TV for two hours.

8.0 Major Projects Completed & KPIs per departments Waste Separation All hotel wastes are separated as follows: 1. Aluminium, metals and cans 2. Plastics, candles, corks, crown corks and such 3. Glasses, broken china and drinking glasses 4. Papers and cardboards 5. Food, fat/oil and organic wastes

Sustainability Management Plan 2016 – Updated March 2016 Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach

Electrical Savings – to ensure 2% savings from power consumption 1. All the technical equipment are maintained regularly and inspections documented through the

Dynawin System (in progress). 2. Energy consumption is calculated in relation to turnover and number of guests, daily for our

operation and monthly through the online optimiser. 3. Energy consumption is recorded and analysed daily by the engineering department. 4. A precise monitoring system has been installed. 5. An automatic switch on/off air-conditioning system is in place, following a time schedule and

controlled through BMS (Building Management System). 6. Low-energy lamps and LED bulbs are fitted in all suitable places, according to the energy-

saving plan (three phases) by the engineering department. 7. Motion sensors are installed in all public area toilets and back of the house corridors.

Water Conservation – to achieve savings from water consumption 1. Water consumption is recorded daily by the engineering department. 2. All water taps are fitted with flow regulators. 3. Bathrooms feature built-in shower heads, with water savers proposed to our owners. 4. Water-saving aerators are installed in all guest room toilets to reduce consumption.

Housekeeping & Stewarding – to maintain waste diversion rate above 2.0 1. Johnson Diversey Company will supply ECO cleaning materials. 2. Employees are trained by Johnson Diversey Company to optimise usage of materials. 3. A hygiene concept will be set up in the entire hotel. 4. All the cleaning chemicals in use have environmental certificates. 5. All the chemicals are kept locked in a separate room. 6. Chemical dispensers will be installed by Johnson Diversey to reduce water consumption 7. All product descriptions are available for all the cleaning materials used (MSDS). 8. Johnson Diversey will collect used soap and old linen from the guest rooms. 9. Cleaning of the outdoor area will use the walk-behind scrubbing machine, instead of water-

pressured machines, to reduce manpower and water consumption. 10. Biodegradable garbage bags will be used to collect the garbage. Hotel Rooms 1. All hotel rooms are fitted with temperature thermostats to control the room temperature

individually. 2. Rooms for non-smokers are available; however, the majority of rooms are for non-smokers. 3. The energy-saving main switch (card operated) turns off the lights in the guest rooms. 4. Energy-saving lamps and light bulbs are in place.

Sustainability Management Plan 2016 – Updated March 2016 Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach

Food & Beverages Management The Food and Beverages Manager is responsible in carrying out environment-friendly operations in his area of accountability. He encourages the staff to participate in activities and trainings to protect people and the environment on the following areas: - Food Hygiene and Safety Levels 1, 2 and 3 - Food Waste Management

9.0 Landscape • Regular maintenance and test for the main irrigation system will ensure healthy landscaping

and proper watering schedule. • Adjust sprinklers for proper coverage to optimise space and avoid runoffs on paved surfaces. • Install a drip irrigation system that uses low volume irrigation. • Adjust sprinkler times and durations according to season; watering during night hours is more

practical, since there is little evaporation. • Landscape using drought-resistant plants and native plants. • Group plants with similar water requirements together on the same irrigation line, and

separate plants with different water requirements on separate irrigation lines. • Landscaped trees and plants are selected to tolerate the climate, soil and water availability. • Use organic fertilisers and soil amendments. • Fertilisers are applied once a month or as required. Natural grass was replaced with artificial grass, as natural grass could not survive due to little sunlight and unfavourable weather conditions. Using artificial grass will also help us reduce water consumption and maintenance costs. During pool renovations, we stored all the plants and trees until we finished the project. We then planted them back, except for a few palm trees that we shifted and replanted at our staff accommodation. Precautionary Statements (MSDS): • If spilled on eyes or skin, immediately flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, whilst

removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothes before reusing. If victim ingests the material but remains conscious and alert, give two to four capfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid.

• Company policy prohibits use of invasive alien species in gardens, landscapes and other

areas of operation. Company only utilises products that are certified by the Dubai municipality and government. Also used by the company are certified seeds and other products that are non-hazardous to the environment.

10. Environment Committee A. It is very important for our hotel to have a dedicated sustainability team, headed by the general manager. This committee establishes an environmental, social and employee concept, and will make sure that all the departments will implement and follow this concept through a regular monthly sustainability meeting. Also, action plans are updated to meet the targets. B. The environmental team is also led by a Sustainability Officer, designated by the general manager. In our case, the Sustainability Officer is our Director of Engineering, whose role will be regularly backed and empowered by the GM to complete the list of tasks, also to make sure that all other committee members are updating regularly their areas of concerns (at the shared folder), and all actions are supported with documents or photos.
