Sustainability in practice

We understand the importance of protecting Alberta’s natural landscapes and diverse species, and strive to balance the effect of our operations on the environment. Our commitment to the protection of our project areas and the environment is an important consideration in the route and site identification process for new transmission facilities. The environment remains a priority during construction and operation of the facilities.

Project specific protection plansDuring each stage of the project process, AltaLink develops an Environmental Protection Plan specific to each project. Our environmental protection planning is an important part of our Environmental Management System, which has been developed under the ISO 14001 guidelines. This system allows us to monitor whether our environmental goals are being attained and identify areas for improvement.

PRELIMINARY PLANNING We evaluate the project area and identify important or sensitive environmental features, including areas to avoid such as native prairie, wetlands and critical bird habitats and areas requiring mitigations measures.

We then determine potential mitigation measures. Depending on the project and area, some mitigation measures may include relocating a structure location or using a different structure foundation.

DURING CONSTRUCTION We monitor our project areas throughout construction, when necessary we will:

• place restrictions on the timing of construction activities

• transplant important plants or vegetation to more appropriate areas

• schedule construction to occur outside of wildlife seasonally sensitive time periods

DEFINITION:

ISO 14001 guidelinesA set of criteria that maps out a framework a company or organization can follow to set up an effective environmental management system. It can be used by any organization regardless of its activity or sector to provide assurance to company management and employees as well as external stakeholders that environmental impact is being measured and improved.

• work under frozen or dry conditions or using matting to protect sensitive natural areas and habitats

• use weed control measures to help prevent the spread of dangerous weeds like clubroot

AFTER CONSTRUCTIONAfter new transmission facilities are built we may implement additional protection measures.

• As part of our Avian Protection Plan we may install GreenjacketTM covers on some substations to provide a barrier between wildlife and electrical equipment. We may also install bird diverters on transmission lines that are in high-risk locations for bird collisions.

• We monitor our facilities and if there is a bird nest in a dangerous location, we will relocate it to a safer place by installing a nest platform nearby.

• In the caribou zone, and as part of our caribou protection plan, we place tree screens at various key locations along the right-of-way. By placing tree screens along the right-of-way, we can help minimize impacts on caribou by predators (wolves).

Regulatory requirementsWe also include in the Environmental Protection Plan how we will meet our regulatory requirements. Some of the federal and provincial environmental regulations we comply with include:

• Alberta Water Act – supports and promotes the conservation and management of water resources in the province

• Alberta Wildlife Act – oversees the management of wildlife and conservation of species at risk

• Migratory Birds Convention Act – regulations that protect migratory birds, their eggs and their nests from hunting, trafficking and commercialization.
