SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDED ACTIVITIES AND ACTION ITEMS

The year began with a Sustainability Advisory Committee (SAC) Open Meeting in September of 2013. Members of the committee reported to the campus community the activities of the previous year and sought input for future projects. The Committee also asked for employees that would be interested in strengthening sustainability efforts on campus to volunteer to become part of the SAC. Pennsylvania Environmental Resource Consortium (PERC) Campus Sustainability Champions

In September of 2013, Bryttani Craigle ’14, Sustainability Advisory Committee data intern, and Michelle Krall M’11, associate director of alumni and parent engagement and former Sustainability Advisory Committee member, were recognized as Campus Sustainability Champions by the Pennsylvania Environmental Resource Consortium (PERC) along with other representatives from colleges and universities around the state. Craigle and Krall were nominated to represent the sustainability initiatives happening at Lebanon Valley College. “Serving as a member of the Sustainability Advisory Committee has helped me to understand how vital sustainability is to everything,” Craigle said. “It also has given me the opportunity to make my contribution to promoting sustainability at LVC.”

Because of their accomplishments, Craigle and Krall were invited to the PERC conference “Leading the Change” on October 29 at the Penn State campus in State College. Caigle attended the conference. The following is a list of recommendations from the 2012-2013 Sustainability Task Force Annual Report to shape the committee’s 2013–2014 agenda. Following each item is a listing of activities and initiatives that correspond to the recommendation.

RecommendedAgendaItem:SolarProjectImplement test solar project.

Outcomes:• As part of the College’s 2013–14 budgeting process, the Sustainability Advisory Committee,

in partnership with Facilities Services, requested funds for a small solar installation on campus to test the feasibility of alternative energy systems.

o The project was funded at $25,000. o Research on a solar-electric project to be located on the Mund College Center was

completed. o After reviewing the proposal, it was determined that the College should explore the

possibility of a larger solar project, potentially using existing rooftops that would have a greater impact on the College’s sustainability efforts.

RecommendedAgendaItem:StudentInvolvement&EarthWeekActivitiesIncrease student involvement and education in sustainability; build up Earth Day activities/programs.

Outcomes:Again this year, Rebecca Urban volunteered to lead an Earth Day subgroup of the SAC. She was assisted in these efforts by Michelle Krall and many other volunteers. This year’s activities occurred throughout the month of April and were not limited to just Earth Day. This was the most robust, varied, and extensive set of Earth Day-related activities since its inception, and were well received and very successful. Some of the Earth Days activities coincided with Dutchman Day and participation in Earth Days activities were encouraged and used as incentives for rewards for students who attended sessions. This year’s activities also included:

• Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery Exhibition: Stacy Levy: Collaborations with Nature. This exhibition was organized by Barbara McNaulty and the Gallery staff and volunteers.

• Film Screenings o “Green Fire” o “Triple Divide” of “Carbon Nation”

• Oratorical Contest: “What do you see as the most pressing environmental sustainability issue(s) today? Why? What are the best ways to address this issue, in your view?”

o Results of the Contest § First place: Matthew Dwyer ‘14 § Second place: Amelia Capuano ’14 § Third place: John Englebert ’14 § Fourth place: Marie Gorman ’17

• Lectures – four outside speakers provided lectures on various topics ranging from organic farming to fracking to environmental art.

• Attendance o Oratorical contest: 13 o Stacy Levy Lecture: 86 o Fracking in America Lecture: 95 o Sustainable Lunch Hour: 40 people visited the wheel o LEED Recognition: 45 o Eco-art at Valley Fest: 20 children o Organics lecture: 70

Mund College Center LEED Certification As part of the Earth Days activities, we celebrated the Silver LEED certification for the Mund College Center and completed a tree planting on Arbor Day.

RecommendedAgendaItem:SustainabilityInitiativesResearch peer and aspirational institutions regarding sustainability initiatives and staffing. After completing research on our peer and aspirational institutions, expand the research to other institutions with the region and institutions that are considered leaders in sustainability in higher education.

Outcomes:Carbon Footprint Inventory for 2012–13 Fiscal Year Throughout the year, the College’s Carbon Footprint was completed based on documentation developed the previous summer. Item of note: the College reduced its Carbon Footprint by almost 50%. One hundred percent of the College’s purchased electricity was from wind powered green energy.

A brief summary of the 2012–2013 Carbon Footprint Inventory is available in Appendix A. The Carbon Footprint Inventory for previous years is available on the Sustainability Advisory Committee website: http://www.lvc.edu/sustainability. Research Data interns researched six peer institutions and documented initiatives and staffing. (Please see Appendix E.) While some research was completed, we would like to update and expand the research in future years. Unfortunately, the committee was not able to consider the information in a timely fashion in order to make recommendations for future research or initiatives. The ongoing collection and review of sustainability initiatives in higher education will be critical to the success of sustainability at LVC. Initiatives The College has partnered with the Pennsylvania Municipal League to submit a grant request to the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development (DCED) to create the Regional Institute of Municipal and Corporate Sustainability (RIMCS). In September of 2014, the DCED awarded $250,000 to the Municipal League and the College for the creation of the RIMCS. Members of the SAC acted as advisors to the task group lead by Greg Buckley that developed the grant request for the (RIMCS). Dining Services

Once again this year, Metz Culinary Management took a lead role in continuing existing programs and implementing new sustainable dining initiatives. Additional information about Many of Metz’s sustainability efforts can be found on their website: http://metzculinary.com/why-metz/sustainability/ (See Appendix E for Metz’s “Sustainability Position Statement.”) Bill Allman, General Manager and Director of Sustainability for Metz Culinary Management provided the following summary of activities at LVC:

Our crowning achievement has been our Food Waste initiative. We have created a Rewards Program called TASTE-Taking Action for a Sustainable Tomorrow Everywhere. Students earn rewards for eating their entire meal, keeping good food out of landfills. In addition, they get rewards for sustainable choices such as eating vegetarian meals and sampling new food items rather than taking a large

Page 7: Sustainability Advisory Committee Annual Report 2013–2014s3.amazonaws.com/lvc-www/files/resources/13-14-sac-summary.pdf · The College regularly participates in the Sightlines Facilities

6

portion and food ending up in landfills. Student involvement resulted in a decrease in plate cost of 9.4 cents a plate for 416,653 meals compared to 2012-2013. This resulted in a total reduction in food costs of $39,165 and approximately 25,430 fewer pounds of food waste in our landfills. The pilot program has been so successful at LVC that Metz has developed the program and instituted it at Misericordia University and Maryville College this fall and plan on implementing it at Florida A & M University in spring 2015.

In addition to continuing several initiatives from last year, several new initiatives were introduced to the campus this year:

Facilities-related Initiatives

Composting The committee investigated the possibility of creating a composting facility here at the College. Several members of the committee met with Carl Hursh to learn about composting and the associated potential costs. After reviewing the information presented and the projected costs of equipment, it appears the College could implement a composting program for less than $20,000 (See Appendix F). The SAC recommends continued exploration of composting as a viable way for the College to recycle food and yard waste.

Facilities Metrics In 2013, the College developed metrics for the College to use in measuring sustainability. The initial metrics are: 1. Electricity usage 2. Natural gas usage 3. BTU/square foot/year The College regularly participates in the Sightlines Facilities Benchmarking and Analysis Survey. Based on the Sightlines benchmarks of institutions and the College’s history, the College’s benchmark is <90,000 BTU/square foot/year

Recycling

• In April of 2013 the College installed a cardboard baler at the Mund College Center. We have collected over 20 tons of cardboard per year since the baler was installed. We were able to recognize revenue at $100/ton in 2013-2014. To date, the sale of the cardboard has more than covered the leasing costs of the baler and additional cost savings have been realized from fewer recycling container pulls and less cardboard in the trash stream.

Page 8: Sustainability Advisory Committee Annual Report 2013–2014s3.amazonaws.com/lvc-www/files/resources/13-14-sac-summary.pdf · The College regularly participates in the Sightlines Facilities

7

Other Initiatives • Electronics Recycling, coordinated by Information Technology, was completed several times

throughout the year. More than 4,000 pounds of equipment was collected and recycled. • Computer giveaway program – in order to give new life to 4+ year-old computers,

Information Technology coordinated their annual giveaway of computers to nonprofit organizations and College employees. More than 150 computers were repurposed through this program.

• Carbon Neutrality - Will Delavan researched the possibility of the College becoming Carbon Neutral through the purchase of carbon credits. This initiative requires additional research to determine if the College has the financial resources to make it a reality.

RecommendedAgendaItem:SustainabilityPlanning

Develop a plan for assessing sustainability activities on campus. Develop a form for gathering information about sustainability initiatives across campus.

Outcomes:

Unfortunately, the committee was not able to address this initiative this year. We hope to carry it forward to 2014-2015.
