SUSSEX UNITED METHODIST CHURCH October 2018 Many of us have heard the quote from 2 Timothy 6:10, "Love of money is the root of all evil." We ask, "If this is true, then why do churches have to spend so much time talking about money?" Because we seem to raise the subject more than once in a given year. Well, the short answer is that we, the church, don't have to talk about money in the 2 Timothy sense, but we do need to talk about economics. 2 Timothy 6 refers to greed. And most good economists will tell you, "It doesn't pay to be too greedy." The greedy may seem to prosper for a while, but, in the end, God's economy catches up with them, usually sooner than later. In God's economy, talk about money definitely has a place. When the Israelites entered the Promised Land, it was important that there was a set system for sustaining the Jewish religion: the tithe (the top tenth of the first fruits of whatever harvest). When the earthly economy of Jerusalem and all Israel were devastated by the Roman legions in 70 AD, the survival of the first church there depended upon the generosity of the newly formed gentile congregations of the Apostle Paul. Without the help of business-people like Lydia (Acts 16) the early church would have failed. Several scholars believe now that Mary Magdalene was not a romantic interest but in fact a financial supporter of Jesus and the Twelve. On the other hand, the greed of people like Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5) threatened the survival of the early church, just as greed can threaten our church today. And a healthy earthly economy enables we the people of the church to support our congregation more generously. When Bill Clinton famously said, "It's the economy dummy!" he was uttering prophetic words. As they said in the early days of the US space program, "No bucks! No Buck Rogers!" If United Methodists want to transform the world (our mission statement) we need to be more savvy economically. God's economy is an economy of abundance (Matt 13 and 25) not scarcity, but it is an economy. The word economy comes from the Greek words for house (oikos) and rules (nomos). God's economy is about house rules. The number one house rule is "love one another." (John 15) But the word used for love there is "agape." It's a special kind of love that takes responsibility for a neighbor and lays down its life for a friend. When our economics are ruled by those sentiments, we can enjoy an abundance. When our economics are ruled by greed, evil is not far behind, and our end is near. So it is important to talk about how we either love our money or love with our money, an economics of grace or an economics of greed. It can mean the reward prepared for us from the beginning of time or the experience of the outer darkness where there is great wailing and gnashing of teeth. It's ours to choose. SUSSEX UNITED

METHODIST CHURCH

October 2018

Many of us have heard the quote from 2 Timothy 6:10, "Love of money is the root of all evil." We ask,

"If this is true, then why do churches have to spend so much time talking about money?" Because we seem to

raise the subject more than once in a given year. Well, the short answer is that we, the church, don't have to talk

about money in the 2 Timothy sense, but we do need to talk about economics. 2 Timothy 6 refers to greed. And

most good economists will tell you, "It doesn't pay to be too greedy." The greedy may seem to prosper for a

while, but, in the end, God's economy catches up with them, usually sooner than later. In God's economy, talk

about money definitely has a place.

When the Israelites entered the Promised Land, it was important that there was a set system for

sustaining the Jewish religion: the tithe (the top tenth of the first fruits of whatever harvest). When the earthly

economy of Jerusalem and all Israel were devastated by the Roman legions in 70 AD, the survival of the first

church there depended upon the generosity of the newly formed gentile congregations of the Apostle Paul.

Without the help of business-people like Lydia (Acts 16) the early church would have failed. Several scholars

believe now that Mary Magdalene was not a romantic interest but in fact a financial supporter of Jesus and the

Twelve. On the other hand, the greed of people like Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5) threatened the survival of

the early church, just as greed can threaten our church today. And a healthy earthly economy enables we the

people of the church to support our congregation more generously. When Bill Clinton famously said, "It's the

economy dummy!" he was uttering prophetic words. As they said in the early days of the US space program,

"No bucks! No Buck Rogers!" If United Methodists want to transform the world (our mission statement) we

need to be more savvy economically. God's economy is an economy of abundance (Matt 13 and 25) not

scarcity, but it is an economy.

The word economy comes from the Greek words for house (oikos) and rules (nomos). God's economy is

about house rules. The number one house rule is "love one another." (John 15) But the word used for love there

is "agape." It's a special kind of love that takes responsibility for a neighbor and lays down its life for a friend.

When our economics are ruled by those sentiments, we can enjoy an abundance. When our economics are ruled

by greed, evil is not far behind, and our end is near. So it is important to talk about how we either love our

money or love with our money, an economics of grace or an economics of greed. It can mean the reward

prepared for us from the beginning of time or the experience of the outer darkness where there is great wailing

and gnashing of teeth. It's ours to choose.

Operation Backpack Thank you so much for collecting school supplies and donating them to Operation Backpack. It was a great success. Your generosity provided much needed supplies to 190 children so far in the Sussex area. This will help them get the school year off to a great start. We will also continue to distribute school supplies throughout the school year as needed. We couldn't have done this without you!

Items currently needed at the Pantry include canned vegetables (peas, corn), canned fruit (mixed, peaches, pineapple, Mandarin oranges), applesauce, canned beans (refried, kidney, chili, baked), jelly/jam, macaroni & cheese, canned pasta (ravioli, spaghetti, etc.), pasta (spaghetti, bow tie), pasta sides, potato sides, stuffing, cereal, and oatmeal,

SUMC’s next volunteer day at the Pantry is Saturday, October 6 from 9:00 am to Noon. To be sure the Food Pantry is well staffed, each church within the Cooperating Churches of Sussex (CCOS) is assigned one day a month to provide three additional people to assist their volunteers. SUMC provides our team on the first Saturday of each month from 9:00 am to noon. If you would like to volunteer please contact Annita Moore or sign up on the clipboard.

Opportunities for SUMC Nurture, Outreach and Witness (NOW)

Crafts for a Cause We are a fun and friendly group who meet at the church twice a month on Wednesday evening to make prayer shawls, lapghans, and prayer squares. Please join us! If you cannot join us, please consider taking one of the easy patterns in the folder on the shelf outside the office and making something at home. You can also help by donating yarn. This month’s meetings are Wednesdays October 3, 17 and 31 at 6:30 pm in the Adult Room.

Prayer Shawls are available for you to take at any time. The display is set up outside the church office.

Prayer Squares are small knit or crocheted squares (about 18”- 20” square) to offer to those parents whose babies do not survive the birthing process.

Lap Robes are for persons confined to wheelchairs that are often chilly and appreciate a hand crafted blanket to keep their legs and laps warm. Blankets may be knit or crocheted. Size should be from 25” x 36” to 30” x 40”.

Kingdom Workers If you need help with a project around the house that you are unable to tackle yourself (cleaning gutters, washing windows, small painting projects), contact Pat Keller, Roberta, or Pastor Jim. Your needs will be assessed and a crew will be established to assist you whenever possible. If you are willing to assist when there is a need, let us know to add your name to the list.

Naomi’s Cupboard This ministry of caring for those recovering from illness or surgery is still active. If you need help as you recover, please contact Verda, the church office or Pastor Jim and meals and other help needed will be arranged. If you are willing to provide meals, please let us know to add your name to the list.

Are you an Online Banker? Do you pay any of your bills online through your bank? Did you know that you could set up Sussex United Methodist Church as a payee and a check could come weekly, bi-weekly or monthly - at no additional cost to you?

What benefit would there be to doing this? One of the most important would be convenience. Sometimes it is a scramble to get out of the house and you remember you forgot to write your offering check.

Perhaps you have other commitments on Sunday morning but still wish to support the well-being of your church.

Whatever the reason, consider looking into this option. The church needs your financial support. And if you can't make it on Sunday, you are still doing what you can financially.

Winter Snow Removal We are looking for volunteers to adopt the driveway of a senior or adult with a disability for the winter season. Each time there is a snowfall, the volunteer will shovel their assigned driveway and walkway. This is a great opportunity for a group who can either serve together or take turns.

Holiday Giving Program We need your help to make the Holiday Giving Program a success again this year! In recent years, our grant funding for the Holiday Giving Program has declined. This means the self-sufficiency packages we give to 400-500 seniors and adults with disabilities living on a fixed income contain fewer gifts. Items we are collecting are: $10 Walgreens Gift Cards, $10 Pick ‘n Save Gift Cards, $10 Walmart Gift Cards, $5 McDonald’s Gift Cards, books of forever stamps, and thin puzzle books. To learn more about this program, please view our 2018 Holiday Giving Tool Kit. All items are due December 10, 2018. Thank you for helping make the holidays brighter for people in Waukesha County who may not otherwise receive a gift.

Santa Run Volunteers are needed for the 10th Annual Waukesha 5K Santa Run & Walk Fundraiser benefitting Eras Senior Network. The event occurs the morning of Sunday, December 2, 2018. Opportunities include helping registrants as they register, handing out

refreshments or t-shirts, or along the route as a route guide. Route Guides hold signs, cheer on runners, and help ensure the participants find their way along the route.

Volunteer from Home Call clients to talk with them or just make sure they are doing okay.

Urgent Ongoing Need for Volunteer Drivers We are in need of more drivers to help transport seniors and adults with disabilities to their healthcare appointments and the grocery store. Worried about making a commitment every week? Only drive when you have the time! This opportunity is very flexible and can be scheduled week to week. Areas of need include Waukesha, Menomonee Falls, New Berlin, Oconomowoc, and Brookfield.

Sussex and Hartland Meal Drivers Deliver meals to homebound seniors in Sussex and Hartland weekdays between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Mileage reimbursement provided. Must be at least 18 years of age, show proof of car insurance, and have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.

Volunteers age 18 years and older are welcome to participate in all programs as volunteers of ERAs Senior Network. Volunteers age 55 years and older are encouraged to become RSVP members. Special youth volunteer opportunities are also available. 6

PRAYER FAMILIES

The purpose of the prayer families is to share our concern and support at times other than during a crisis. Ways to do that are to include the person or family in your prayers during the week. You may wish to let them know that they are in your thoughts by sending a note, talking to them at church or a telephone call. The names are chosen at random, but sometimes seem by design, in that it has come at a particularly appropriate time for them.
