Long before retail outlets came to dominate the land-scape along Blue Mound Road in Waukesha County, it hada eclectic history that can hardly be matched by the present.

Historian Stephen Hauser gave a glimpse of that history which includes appearances by Les Paul and Al Capone during a presentation at the Pauline Haass Public LibraryOct. 21. Hauser is author of Following the Trail a bookwhich chronicled the history of the road. Hauser previouslygave a presentation at the library on the early history of theroad, and gave a brief summary of how Blue Mound Roadwas created.

According to Hauser, Blue Mound Road precededWisconsin becoming a state. The road was constructed as amilitary highway in 1839 and extended from Milwaukee tojust west of Madison in a community called Blue Mounds.Hauser said the road was supposed to have been done ear-lier, but funding was held up and the roads original route tothe Mississippi River was shortened because funding ran out.By the time the road was completed, the military no longerneeded the road.

In the 20th Century, Blue Mound Road was paved withconcrete in 1913, the first highway in the state to be paved.Hauser said Blue Mound Road was a busy road, which iswhy it was the first paved. However, the road was repavedin 1918 to minimize cracking.

The road was also the location of the first drive-in restau-rant in the state near Goerkes Corners Beekmans, whichserved ribs.

Paul, at the insistence of his mother toget a job, talked his way into a job atBeekmans as guitar and harmonica play-er. After the first week, owner NonaBeekman said no one could hear Paul.

In other words, it didnt work, but theyoung man was not so easily dissuaded,Hauser said.

Paul responded by going home andtearing apart a radio and went back thefollowing week, hotwiring his guitar intothe public address system at the restau-rant.

He was going to do one of twothings: He was either going to electrocutehimself or he was going to invent the elec-tric guitar. Well fortunately, he did the lat-ter, Hauser said.

After Beekmans, Paul played severalspeakeasies along the road during prohi-bition.

Another Blue Mound Road eatery thatgained prominence a few years later: TheGolden Guernsey Milk Jug. Hauserexplained the dairy was a co-op that wasa very popular milk producer inWaukesha County. Hauser said the busi-ness was called the Milk Jug because of a400-foot high stainless steel milk jug at the

site. The business opened in 1936 andwas operated until 1957.Hauser explained the restaurant was

created by the company to generate pub-licity, and the restaurant housed a circulardairy barn where dairy cattle were kept.Customers at the business could see cowsbeing milked while eating lunch.

City folk thought it was pretty remark-able, Hauser said.

Hauser noted that after he includedinformation on the Milk Jug in his book, hereceived a letter from a woman thankinghim for including the reference, as thewoman had been telling her daughterabout the restaurant for years. Thanks toHausers book, the woman could now

The Germantown girls cross countryteam just missed qualifying for the state

meet as a team Oct. 25, though two mem-bers of the team did get individual bids.Germantown finished third at Tendick

Park Homestead sectional with 82 points,nine points behind Homestead. The toptwo teams advance to the state meet.Alyssa Goesch finished 10th with a time of20:48 and was followed by BriannaKlopfer in 12th with a time of 20:52.Goesch and Klopfer earned individualbids to the state meet.

On any given day anything can hap-pen, and unfortunately today wasnt ourday, Germantown girls cross countryCoach Nancy Pietrowiak said afterward.

Goesch will making her second trip asan individual qualifier to the state meetwhile Klopfer qualified this year after miss-ing out by five seconds last year.

Its really good to see that she finishedstrong and made it, Pietrowiak said ofKlopfer.

Behind them were teammates JenniferLindgren in 18th (21:21), Molly Baus in19th (21:22), and Calli Lemke in 23rd(21:40). Also running for Germantownwere Lucy Delain in 31st (22:03) andKayla Hower in 42nd (22:36).

Nothing rattled Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. inhis first game of the 2014 postseason. TheGermantown senior quarterback rebound-ed from an interception on the Warhawksfirst possession, completing 16-of-24 passesfor 291 yards and three touchdowns andcarrying his team to a 37-18 win at homeover Brookfield Central, Oct. 24, in the firstround of the Division 2 playoffs.

The Lancers (5-5) took advantage of themiscue by Germantown (9-1) and scoredfirst on a 22-yard field goal by senior BucNellen for a 3-0 lead with 7 minutes 42 sec-onds left in the first quarter.

The Warhawks got a big break from

their special teams unit when Central juniorquarterback and punt returner DominicLabellarte dropped the ball, which wasrecovered by Germantown junior AaronPokorny. The Warhawks scored four playslater on a 15-yard run by senior runningback Joe Lemerond with 4:08 left in thequarter and led 7-3. They got anothertouchdown on a 39-yard pass fromLawhorn to senior receiver Steve Doran with1:17 left and led after one, 14-3.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told I have no bone leftunder my dentures. I keep getting sharp stinging painwhen I bite down and my dentures pop out when I

open my mouth even with denture adhesive. What aremy options and how much does this cost?Dear Jan, I am sorry you are having problems with

your dentures. Teeth maintain bone. When teeth areremoved you can lose 40% of the remaining bone thefirst year after tooth loss. This bone loss will continueevery year until implants are placed to stop bone loss.This means you can lose height of bone and width ofbone continuously. When you wear dentures thedentures may appear tight but over time as the boneresorbs the dentures get looser and looser. That is whydentures should be relined or remade every 3-5 yearsto try and maintain a better fit between the dentureacrylic and the bone.

Dentures can move up to 1/2 an inch during anormal chewing cycle. That movement coupled withbone loss can quickly lead to exposure of nerves thatcan cause pain from denture pressure.

Solutions to nerve pain involve stabilizing yourdentures or moving into "fixed" teeth again. This isdone by placing implants or mini-implants into the

jaws to support your dentures. How many implants

you receive is often dependant upon your budget. Ihave written many articles on Upgradeable Dentistrywhich is a concept that allows patients to placeimplants before bone loss occurs. They can thencontinue to add implants over time as their budgetsallow until they have enough support to have apermanent bridge or "fixed teeth." Placing implants assoon as teeth are lost helps prevent more costly bonegrafts later on. There are ways of making Snap-On-Dentures with a few implants so that the implants canhave attachments that the denture clips to. Thisprevents slipping of the teeth and eliminates the needfor denture adhesive which can be quite annoying toclean out each day. If enough implants can be affordedthen a bar can be made to snap the denture on to andthis allows the implants to be splinted and increasestheir strength.

The Menomonee Falls boys soccerteam qualified for the state tournament Oct.25 with a sectional final win over Hamiltonthat was decided in a shootout.

Making history is always sweet andespecially at this point. We werent expect-ed to even come close to this, it just makes

it sweet to prove everybody wrong,Menomonee Falls midfielder Alex Eastmansaid afterward. This is an amazing feeling,unlike anything else.

This is what weve worked for allyear, Menomonee Falls defender JoeBurgoyne added. The season is just abuildup to this moment.

The teams ended regulation in a score-less tie. Kay Olapo put Menomonee Fallson the board in the first overtime by head-ing a cross from Sam Thomann at the 100thminute.

But Hamilton scored the equalizer atthe 116th minute as Ben Krolczyk finishedoff a scramble from a corner kick.

It took all the momentum with thatgoal, Burgoyne said of Hamiltons equaliz-er.

With the score tied 1-1 at the end ofovertime, a shootout settled the matter, witheach team getting five opportunities. Bothteams missed their first chances, butMenomonee Falls converted their next four,with the fourth shootout goal coming fromBrandon Dantone. Menomonee Falls goal-keeper Will Genthe then stoppedHamiltons final attempt to secure the win.

Menomonee Falls advanced to aDivision I state semifinal against BeloitMemorial at 7 p.m. Oct. 31. The state tour-nament will be held at the Uihlein SoccerPark in Milwaukee.

Afterward, Menomonee Falls CoachScott Stein said while Menomonee Fallsplayed good teams in the postseason, theywerent playing teams they always cameacross in past playoffs. He noted that

Menomonee Falls wasnt ranked at the star tof the year and Menomonee Falls wasbeat by a ton of teams in a summerleague.

I think it worked to our advantagementally, Stein said, noting thatMenomonee Falls didnt play any

Brookfield squad in the postseason.However, the teams they did play werevery good, as Stein noted that SheboyganNorth was undefeated at the timeMenomonee Falls played them in the sec-tional semifinal. Also, regional opponentNeenah had only a few early season loss-es.

It was a testament to our guys, they justseemed to battle, Stein said.

He noted that three of MenomoneeFalls losses came to Marquette, BrookfieldEast and Cedarburg, who all qualified forthe state tournament.

I think it grew game by game, Steinsaid of the season. We came out with con-fidence.

Stein said his team is a loose andpractices arent as intense in the past.

Theyre gamers. I think each gamethey showed up, Stein said.

Stein added that he was proud to seealumni at the game.

Eastman also recalled the history of theprogram, as there were several former play-ers in attendance at the game. Burgoynealso thanked Stein and other coaches fortheir support.

Its amazing how much they can

believe in us. They got us this far just bybelieving in us, Burgoyne said.

Hamilton Coach Steve Provan notedthat Menomonee Falls and Hamilton is amajor rivalry for the schools.

It was a tough match and my guysplayed really well, left it all on the field. Ithink the second half we controlled a lot ofthe game, we just werent able to get thegoal, Provan said.

When asked to look back at the season,Provan noted this is his third year coachingHamilton.

Each year weve taken a step forwardand our goal first and foremost this yearwas to win the regional championship,Provan said. We went a step further andthen to be able to beat Arrowhead in thesectional semifinal. What this team accom-

plished here and what these guys accom-plished is something that hasnt beenaccomplished at Hamilton High School in along time.

Provan added that making it to the sec-tional final is another steppingstone for theprogram.

practical, mechanical and electrical aptitude; must be able to read andinterpret both electrical and mechanical drawings; must be fullycomputer literal with Microsoft environment; excellent written and

verbal communication skills; ability to work independently in a matureand professional manner; two year technical degree, certificate orequivalent experience desired. All candidates must be willing to workany available shift; as well as overtime. Corrugated background and/orboiler license is a plus, but not required. Only TEAM THINKINGindividuals should apply.
