    TheSusquehannaSymphonyOrchestrawasfoundedin1978bySheldonBairandisacommunityorchestraofprofessionalandamateurvolunteermusicians.TheSusquehannaSymphony’shomeisinHarfordCounty,Maryland,nearthemouthoftheSusquehannaRiver.TheOrchestraperformsasubscriptionseriesofconcertseveryyear inaddition tooutdoorandchambermusicconcerts.TheOrchestrahasperformedoperaandballet,aswellasstandardorchestralrepertoire,andisknownforitspremieresofnewworksandperformancesofunusualrepertoire.TheOrchestraperformedinSt.Patrick’sCathedral,NewYorkCityforover3,000peopleinNovember2007,andatCarnegieHallfor2,500peopleinOctober2009.

    Thisyearmarksthe35thSeasonoftheSusquehannaSymphonyOrchestra.Suchlongevitywouldnotbepossiblewithoutyoursupport.Wethankyouforattending this evening’s concert, and look forward tomanymore years ofmakingmusic!

    Music DirectorSheldon Bair is the Founder and Music Director of the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra(Maryland),acommunityorchestraofover90members.HeholdsaBachelor’sdegree fromElizabethtown College (Pennsylvania) wherehe studied conducting with Otis Kitchen andcomposition with James McVoy and DarrellDouglas, and aMaster’s degree from TowsonUniversity (Maryland). In addition, his post-graduatestudiesincludeclassesatWestminsterChoirCollegeinPrinceton,NewJersey.SheldonBairhasstudiedconductingwithWitoldRowickiinVienna,andMarcMostovoy,WilliamHudson,andLeonidGrin.

    Bair teachesorchestrafor theHarfordCountyPublicSchools (Maryland), isadjunct faculty for Harford Community College, is on the conducting stafffor the ElizabethtownCollegeMusic Camp, and is often invited to conductandadjudicateyouthorchestrasandsoloists. InNovember2000,BairwasbestowedthePaderewskiAward forContributionstoSocietyandCultureatthePolishEmbassyinWashington,DC.Inthefallof2007,Bairwastheguestconductor for theFlowerMoundSymphonyOrchestra inDallas, Texas,andinFebruary2011heconducted theOklahomaYouthOrchestra inNorman,Oklahoma.Inthefallof2007,93membersoftheSusquehannaSymphonyappearedatSt.Patrick’sCathedralinNewYorkCity,performingaprogramofPolishmusicwithseveralchoirsinfrontofanappreciative,standing-room-onlyaudience.Inthefallof2009,100membersoftheSusquehannaSymphonyperformedonthemainstageatCarnegieHallforthesamePolishimpresario,performingaprogramofPolishworksunderthreedifferentconductors.

    Putting Harford County on the MapInOctober2011,Bairwasinvitedtospeakatthe6thAnnualMalcolmArnoldFestival inNorthampton,U.K.The invitationcamemore thanayearbeforeandwasduetothefactthathehadconductedtheU.S.premiereofArnold’s9th(andlast)SymphonyinBelAirinMarch2000.Onthe90thanniversaryofArnold’sbirth,Bairwasgiventhehonorof layingawreathatthebustofSirMalcolmArnoldinthelobbyoftheNorthamptonConcertHallwherethefestivalwasbeingheld.AlsoduringBair’s triphemetwithTonyMasters,aretiredhighschoolbanddirectorwhohadbroughthisschoolbandtoBelAiron twooccasions; andmetwithEnglish conductorAndrewPennywhohadconducted the Naxos label’s CD set of all nine Arnold symphonies. TheremaybesomepossiblefuturecollaborationwiththeSSOandthelocalyouthorchestrasfromEngland.MaestroBair’stravelsconnecttheSSOtopointsallovertheworldandareoneofthereasonswhythisall-volunteercommunityorchestraisofsuchanamazingvaluetoHarfordCounty.

    About the ComposerRonald Royer isamulti-talentedmusicianwho isactiveas a composer, conductor, and educator. Born in LosAngelesintoafamilyofprofessionalmusicians,hebeganhis careerasa cellist, performingwith suchensemblesas the Pacific Symphony, Utah Symphony, and TorontoSymphony,aswellasworking in themotionpictureandtelevisionindustryinLosAngelesduringthe1980s.

    Asacomposer,hisconcertmusichasbeenperformedbyover50orchestraswithperformancesinCanada,China,CzechRepublic,Finland,Greece,andtheUSA.Mr.Royerhasworkedinfilmandtheaterandthisincludes(withco-composerKevinLau)thescorefortheCanadianchildren’smovie,Gooby,starringRobbieColtraneandEugeneLevy.

    Our Guest PerformerKaye Royer wasborn inCanadaandhasperformed inorchestrasandchamberensemblesthroughoutCanada,the United States, England, and Italy, and as a soloistin concertos by composers such asMozart,Weber, R.Strauss, Beethoven, Finzi, Dubois, Telemann, and herhusband, composer Ronald Royer. Last season, Kayewasa soloistwith theNiagaraSymphonyandSinfoniaTorontoandthisyearshewillperformconcertoswiththeBrantfordSymphonyandtheScarboroughPhilharmonic.She currently holds the position of principal clarinet

    with the Toronto Sinfonietta, Brantford Symphony, Canadian Sinfonietta,ScarboroughPhilharmonic,andtheStratfordSymphonyOrchestra.Shealsoperforms regularly with Niagara Symphony and Sinfonia Toronto, and hasworkedwithorchestrassuchastheKitchener-WaterlooSymphony,HamiltonPhilharmonic, Orchestra London, Talisker Players, Sinfonia Mississauga,and the Orchestra at Niagara Fallsview Casino.     SometimesknownasNight on Bare Mountain,thepieceisbasedonaRussianlegendthattellsofawitches’SabbathtakingplaceonSt.John’sNight(June23–24)ontheLysaHora(amountainwithatopdevoidoftrees)nearKiev.ThetonepoemwascompletedbyMussorgskyin1867butwasneverperformed.After his death, his friend and former roommate, Rimsky-Korsakov did notknowthattheirteacherMilyBalakirev,whohadseverelycriticizedthework,hadthecompletedscore.Rimsky-KorsakovandhispupilAlexanderGlazonov“completed”manyofMussorgsky’smanuscripts, includingNight on “Bare” Mountain andunfinishedworksand createdperformingeditions to enablethemtoentertherepertoire.Indoingso,hemade“corrections”whichmeansthathepreservedthethematicstructure,butoccasionallyaddedoromittedbarsandchangedharmonicstructures.Rimsky-Korsakov’seditionpremieredin 1886 and has become a concert favorite. Another version heard in theDisneyFilmFantasiawasarrangedbyLeopoldStokowski,butisrarelyheardtoday.Mussorgsky’soriginalorchestrationwasnotperformeduntilthe20thcenturyinEnglandineither1932or1933.

    The composer writes, “Echoes, A Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra wascomposedtoexplorevariousmeaningsandwaysan‘echo’canbeincorporatedintoasoloist-versus-orchestrastructure.This threemovementworkutilizesmusical ideas that can be echoed by different combinations of the soloistandvariousinstrumentsoftheorchestra,orsometimes, justbythesoloist.

    Program Notes (Cont’d)Echoes exploits the clarinet’s wide range of expressive possibilities andtechnicalversatility,includingtheinstrument’shugedynamicrange.Fortheorchestration, Echoesusesseveralspatialandantiphonaleffects,onstageaswellastheplacingofmusiciansintheauditoriumandbackstage.Echoes was commissioned by the Brantford Symphony [Canada] to commemoratethe 30th anniversary of clarinetist Kaye Royer playing with the orchestra.Thecomposerwrites,‘Igreatlyappreciatedtheopportunitytocomposethisconcertoformywife.Sheisawonderfulprofessionalplayer,andwealwaysenjoy working together. The music was written in a neo-romantic style torepresentthecontinuedromanceofourmarriage.’ThefirstperformancewasonApril18,2010withKayeRoyerplayingclarinet,PhillipSaraburaconductingandthecomposerplayinginthecellosection.Thiscompositionwassupportedbyamusic-commissioninggrantfromtheOntarioArtsCouncil.”

    TheCavatina fromquartetNo.13was thefifthofsixmovements,with theentire work in its original form lasting almost 50minutes. Beethoven wasin poor health during these years and thework progressed slowly.QuartetNo.13waswrittenduringaperiodwhenBeethovenwasfeelingbetter,ifnotcompletely freeofhis illnessesand, for themostpart, isa “brighter”workthanmostoftheotherearlierquartets.BroadcasterandwriterDavidBartelwrites, “TheCavatinawith itsoperatic title isapreghiera (anaria inwhichthecharacterpleadsfordivineassistance).Onthemanuscript,overoneofthepassages,Beethovenscribbled‘anguished.’Thebasisofthemovementis only a three-part song, but its external simplicity can hardly mask themovement’sintricatelyorganizedharmonyandtortured,sob-brokenmelody….AsBeethovenconsideredtheCavatinaoneofhisgreatestachievements,sohistoryhasagreed.”Thecomposerneverwitnessedthefirstperformanceofthequartet,havingdiedalmostamonthbeforeitoccurred.

    John Henken, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association writes, “In1896,Dvořákwroteagroupof four tonepoems inspiredbyballads fromacollectionofCzechfolktalesinversebyKarelJaromirErben.Thesewerethelastorchestralpieceshewroteotherthanonemoretonepoemthefollowingyear.MostoftheballadsareinthedarkmoodoftheBrothersGrimmattheirgrimmest,andThe Noonday Witch[ashetitledit],thesecondoftheDvořák’sset,isnoexception.

    Prelude to “Die Meistersinger”Richard Wagner (1813–1883)

    Written and composed by Wagner, Die Meistersinger is the only comedyamonghismatureworks. It isalsohisonlyoperacenteredonahistoricallywell-definedtimeandplaceratherthanamythicalorlegendarysetting.ItistheonlymatureWagneroperatobebasedonanentirelyoriginalstorydevisedbyWagnerhimselfanditistheonlyoneofWagner’smatureoperasinwhichtherearenosupernaturalormagicalpowersorevents.

    Thestory takesplace inNurembergduring themiddleof the16thcenturyandrevolvesaroundthereal-lifeguildofMeistersinger(MasterSingers),anassociationofamateurpoetsandmusicians,mostly from themiddleclassand often master craftsmen in their main professions. The mastersingersdevelopedacraftsmanlikeapproachtomusic-making,withanintricatesystemofrulesforcomposingandperformingsongs.

    Program Notes (Cont’d)After completing a scenario, Wagner began writing the libretto (the story)in 1862, and followed this by composing the overture (Prelude). This waspublically performed in Leipzig in November of 1862, conducted by thecomposer.Manycomposersdidnotwriteoverturestotheiroperasuntilafterthefullproductionwascompleted.WorkonAct1wasbeguninthespringof1863,buttheoperainitsentiretywasnotfinisheduntilOctober1867.Thepremierewasgiven inMunichonJune21,1868andwasatriumph,beinghailedasoneofWagner’smostsuccessfulworks.
