AN INSIDER GUIDE TO THE FASHION CAPITAL

With a speciality in new and emerging jewellery and accessory design, Rena Sala is an independent PR and brand consultant in London. Her emphasis is on British-based talent, most of whom make their pieces by hand, giving it a luxury edge that can’t be replicated.

Prior to setting up her own firm Rena worked in luxury marketing and PR. Her experience in the fashion world spreads far and wide and was born from an involvement in it from an early age. “My grandmother owned a chain of bridal shops in Canada in the 80s where my great grandmother and my mother both worked. I am not sure if this is what instilled a fascination in me, but growing up I always knew I wanted to work in fashion”.

Now an established member of the fashion world, Rena counts herself lucky to be able to visit Paris regularly for Fashion Week. She calls the city “poetic, luminous and romantic” and can list countless places that always draw her back during a visit. She gave us the low down on her top spots over her morning essential, a cup of coffee, at La Cuisine.

Jessie Harris is a British-born jewellery designer and maker who works from a studio in East London, close to the home she shares with her husband. Since founding her own label, Jessie Harris London, in 2012, her designs have gained an ardent following and often make their way onto the editorial pages of fashion magazines.

“I specialise in clean, innovative shapes, producing minimal sculptures for the body. I like to keep my work light-hearted and playful, aiming to surprise and delight”. She cites travel as a key part of her design process, so always carries her little HAY sketchbook, which has seen the first look at many of her fascinatingly ‘retro-futuristic’ designs. In fact, her view on Paris – “elegant, nostalgic and surprising… a city that always feels familiar but breath-taking at the same time” - is one that resonates throughout her work, where you can see the merging of shapes and motifs that have familiarity from times gone by, and unexpected nods to the future.

Susannah Garrod’s beautiful hand-drawn illustrations have become a rarity in today’s digital world; with a keen focus on fashion and luxury lifestyle, her work is a luxury in its own right.

After studying History of Art at university, and subsequently pursuing a career in magazine publishing, Susannah felt a strong pull to be a participant in the creative world, rather than a voyeur. By putting pen to paper, she has been able to combine the things she most loves: art, painting and fashion. It is probably this true passion behind her work that has led her to successfully build a client-base across many different international luxury fashion brands.

While based in north Wales with her husband and two daughters, Susannah’s career takes her on lots of travels to see city-based clients. She says of Paris “The romanticism here always strikes me. It seems wherever you are in the city, you are under the watchful gaze of one of the most recognisable landmarks in the world and you cannot help but be transported into an old movie scene or picture-perfect postcard moment”.

Australian-born fashion editor and blogger, Luke Ross, is a keen traveller often looking at the world through the lens of his camera – the one item he rarely travels without. But even when he’s not lining up his next great photo opportunity, his deep-rooted love of fashion means he sees things with a sartorial filter. It is this recognition of the aesthetic in the everyday that has gained him such a following on his blog, The Fashion Samaritan.

“Fashion is very important to me. It is the reason I get out of bed, the pure joy I get out of creating an image can’t be compared to anything else”. It is the visual approach to the world that keeps him coming back to the French capital time and time again – if not for a fashion shoot, just for his own pleasure. “Paris to me is literally the most beautiful city in the world. Everywhere you turn there is something breath-taking. It conjures up amazement, wonder and mystery. As a city that has witnessed so much change, it sparks a lot of questions and a thirst for knowledge”.

Over a drink at the Long Bar, Luke gave us his edit of the best places to experience the true essence of Parisian beauty.
