As social change practitioners, we take an active role in shaping the future of our societies and our planet. This short course will dive into questions at the heart of this effort - questions about our world-view, our ways of understanding the world. We’ll explore the profound but little-known “participatory science” of J.W. Goethe, the poet and scientist that some consider a father of post-modern and quantum thought.

This event will be offered by Jeff Barnum. Jeff Barnum is a co-founder of Reos Partners and an artist, teacher, process designer, and facilitator.

Price: Contribute according to ability Time: December 9, 2009 from 1:30pm to 4:30pm Host: Jeff Barnum Location: Room 204, Nørre Alle 7, København N

Climate change epitomizes, in the extreme, everything we know about tough social challenges: how they arise, why we get stuck, and what it takes to make progress. It demonstrates the extreme fullness of our world and the global interdependence this produces. It exemplifies extreme dynamic, social and generative com-plexity: cause and effect interlinked and separated by decades and continents; deeply differing perspectives and priorities among the world-wide actors involved; and a situation that no one has ever faced before.

All participants will recive at free copy of “Love and Power”

Price: Free Time: December 9, 2009 from 5pm to 7pmHost: Adam Kahane Location: LiteraturHaus, Møllegade 7, 2200 København N

Book Launch by Adam Kahane: Power and Love: A Theory and Practice of Social Change

This workshop proposes that dealing with climate change through negotiation between governments is seriously inadequate. We, the citizens of the world, need to take responsibility by first understanding what is behind climate change--including the global financial system and the global monetary system, which lead to unbridled competition and consumption. Education and coordinated action through citizens’s panels in dialogue with groups of experts are proposed, through a blueprint for change that can be applied locally and regionally. Multi-media presentation, using slides, film clips and other media.

Price: 10 Euro Time: December 10, 2009 from 9am to 12:30pmHosts: Leo Burke and Carolyn Lee Location: Room 204, Nørre Alle 7, København N

SURVIVAL ACADEMY PROGRAMME COPENHAGEN 8-17 DECEMBER

Today’s climate change situation is characterized by enormous complexity. Relying on past experience to figure out what to do is no longer sufficient. If we always do what we’ve always done, we’ll always get what we always got. So, if we want to address this complex challenge, then we have to learn a different approach. This approach has to be not piece-meal but systemic; not relying exclusively on authorities and experts, but includ-ing all key stakeholders.

This one day course introduces the approach and capacities of the Change Lab.

Price: 100 Euro Host: Adam Kahane, Jeff Barnum and Mille Bojer, Reos Partners Time: Dec 10, from 9am - 5pm Location: Room 305, Nørre Allé 7, 2200 København N

The Change Lab: Coping with the complexity of Climate Change

To stand up against climate change we as humans need to change as well. The green revolution is not a tea party – hard decisions need to be made. But people react differently when confronted with the demand of change. Do you feel powerl

ess against the guys who don’t give a damn about climate change? Or tired of all these new ways of doing good and have ended up not believing in any of them? This session explores the different roles coming up when we are confronted with change. And it helps you understand what lies in the resistance of change.

Build a visual language for designing, hosting and documenting meaningful community dialogues around the present climate challenges.

When faced with tremendous change in the world it is an important skill to be able to maintain ones own balance, when many things outside of oneself might be going out of balance. The discipline of peace gives 8 pratices to finding this sense of inner peace in our daily lives.

It carries an approach to realizing the First Peace in oneself based on ancient Maya and pre Maya wisdom and the understanding that we cannot create a peaceful world without creating a culture of peace within our-selves.

Discipline of Peace - increasing our resilience through cultivating inner peace

What if we had applied today’s thinking to where we were some twenty years ago? What might the visions and imagined futures have been? What might the plans have looked like? And, how does that compare with what actually happened in the world and in the business community?

This workshop engages the participants in co-creating a map of the last thirty years. It reminds us how we have changed our minds and assumptions before. It creates respect for the unknown and appreciation for how we can attain successful outcomes. It serves as a preparation for our next business moves.

This Open Space happens in the middle of the Survival Academy. The many sessions leading up to it will most likely spark many ideas for collaboration and innovation, that can then be developed and deepened at the Open Space. The Open Space is the place to bring those questions or activities that you want to work on with others.

The central question is “what am I passionate about and willing to take responsibility for in addressing climate change?”

What is at the core of the climate crisis we are facing? It seems it is a sense separation and disconnection from nature, thinking we are not part of the larger ecosystem of nature.

We will explore some of the ancient wisdom teachings helping us connect with nature, experience nature first hand and look at how this kind of work can actively influence the way we approach environmental challenges. You will get an understanding of the importance of connecting to nature and see the possibilities it creates to take better decisions.

Brazil is a country deeply affected by climate change and which already has innovative stories of community adaptation to share. In this session, the hosts will share pictures and stories of Brazilian actions on adaptation and establish a dialogue among participants from different cultures about the challenges of climate change, the possibilities for community adaptation, and strategies for action. The larger intention is to start building a knowledge and learning community of “adaptation agents” to share information about local adaptation ac-tions and methods of increasing resilience and reducing vulnerability.

Climate change and social inequality are issues concerning all of us. In addressing these issues and building alternatives, we need the contribution of every sector: governments, non-profits, individuals and companies.

This session intends to share openly the strategies, practices, accomplishments and mistakes of a major finan-cial institution integrating sustainability in its core business. In the last 9 years, the financial group Santander in Brazil has considered the individual as the centre of its business model, invested in employee education, engaged its suppliers, changed some of its core processes and built a strong brand founded on sustainability.
