Surry County Wine TrailSurry County Wine Trail
Yadkin Valley Grape VarietalsIn the Blue Ridge foothills of North Carolina, Surry County sits at an ideal elevation and latitude for growing European vinifera grapes. Roughly three-fourths are classic vinifera varietals for dry and semi-sweet wines, setting the Yadkin Valley apart from other wine regions in the South. However, fans of sweeter wines will fi nd ample options as well.

Birthplace of Yadkin Valley AVASurry County is the birthplace of the Yadkin Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA).
In the early 2000s, brothers Charlie and Ed Shelton of Shelton Vineyards undertook the lengthy process of getting federal government designation of Yadkin Valley as North Carolina’s fi rst AVA. That set the stage for growth in the valley, particularly in Surry County.
The Surry County Wine Trail features 16 wineries, of which 14 are located in the county. Two are just outside the county and align closely with their Surry counterparts.
