Agroup of 1941 graduates of MountAiry High School enjoyed another

class reunion. It was their 69th reunionsince walking down the aisle to accepttheir diplomas on the stage of the oldRockford Street School. (This is now thestage of the Andy Griffith Playhouse.)

About 15 of the classmates still gettogether for monthly luncheons and recallhow things were back in their days atschool. They also keep abreast of happen-ings around town.

Central View Missionary BaptistChurch recognized Gilmer Steven BranchSr. on Nov. 7 for his service as a VietnamCombat veteran. Steve served in theUnited States Army, 4th Infantry 29thArtillery, from November 1965 untilAugust 1967. Most of his time was spentin Vietnam. He trained at Fort Lewis,Wash. From there he went to Howitzer,MEDCAP team, he assisted medics inpicking up the injured. Steve was present-ed with a plaque of appreciation by Pastor,Rev. Travis Chipman. Central View deeplyappreciates the veterans for their dedica-tion and service to their country, theirpatriotism, love of country and willingnessto serve and sacrifice. VOLUNTEERSGreater Mount Airy Area Habitat for Humanity held its

annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at First PresbyterianChurch of Mount Airy on Nov. 13. This was an opportunity toreflect on this past year and look forward to more opportunitiesto provide hope to families in Surry County in the form of sim-ple, decent, affordable homes.

The volunteers of the year were announced and presented aplaque. Rob Sinton and Richard Miller were announced as the2010 Build Volunteers of the Year. Mario Barros received the2010 ReStore Volunteer of the Year Award. LifeSpan wasnamed the ReStore Volunteer Group of the Year. The top 12build volunteers for this year, based on recorded hours, werehonored with a t-shirt and given the name “A Few Good Men.”A special gift was given to Paul Eich, chair of the board ofdirectors, for the many hours of volunteer work he has given tothe affiliate this year.

Several prospective Habitat homeowners gave testimonialsof what Habitat means to them and thanked the volunteers whohelped their dream of homeownership come true.

Smithcousinreunion

The first Smith cousin reunion washeld Sept. 25 at the Unity ChurchFellowship Hall in Ararat, Va. Honoredguest was Wilburn Smith, the only livingchild of the late Emma and Ellis Smith.The other honored guest Louise Smithwife of the late Preston Smith was unableto attend.

Other guests were the Rev. BufordJessup and Dorothy George.

Good food and fellowship was enjoyedby all. Twenty-five cousins and somespouses were present. We hope morecousins will attend the next reunion. Fourof the first cousins were unable to attend.

Wilburn Smith also celebrated his 85th birthday on Sept. 25 with his wife Lucy Clement Smith, his son David and wife Teresa and his daughter Janis and her hus-band Ed, all of Salem, Va. Mildred August Niece also pictured.

Those attending were members of the late Mamie Smith Dalton family, the late Maggie Smith family, the late Preston Smithfamily, and the late Pearl Smith Gentry family. The late Henry H. Smith and the late Joe Smith had no children.

Adult Home residentsvisit Myrtle BeachSeveral residents of the Cana, Va., Adult Home Assisted Living Facilityrecently enjoyed a vacation to Myrtle Beach, S.C., with a stay at theGrand Atlantic Resort. The assistant administrator, Christine Worrell,decided that it would be nice for the residents of the facility to go ona trip together. While at the beach, the residents enjoyed numerousactivities. They went to the Ripley’s Aquarium, located at Broadwayat the Beach. Here they viewed fish portrayed in their natural habi-tats, rode through the underwater tunnel and some even got to touchhorseshoe crabs and stingrays at interactive exhibits. One morningeveryone strolled along the Springmaid Pier, located in south MyrtleBeach, where they delighted in watching the fishermen reel in theircatch. Several of the men on the trip said they want to go back withtheir tackle and try their hands at fishing. Afternoons were spentswimming and lounging by the pools at the resort and walking alongthe ocean looking for shells and other artifacts. While on the trip, res-idents were treated to seafood and country buffets and had a farewellbreakfast at IHOP. This trip was special because many of those whowent had never been to the beach before and those who had, saidthat it had been many years since their last trip. In fact, a couple ofresidents said they had never been further away than Mount Airy andwere amazed at the size of the buildings as they went throughWinston-Salem and also at the beach. All who went said they had awonderful time and are planning on returning next year.

GALAX, Va. — Walk down the halls ofGladeville Elementary School and likely,the sounds of Neil Sadaka's “CalendarGirl” or The Beatles’ “Come Together” orRay Charles' “Hit the Road” will be flow-ing out of the classrooms. That's becauseGVES has begun to incorporate music intotheir everyday classroom learning.

“The kids just love all of the music thatI play in class,” said Joyce Anders, firstgrade teacher. “We have a song for gettingin groups, for getting our phonics books,

for cleaning up our room — a song for vir-tually everything. Using music in theclassroom, allows the kids to get up andmove around and the songs tell them whatto do. For example, when I play 'Don'tTalk Back' by The Coasters, they know tostart cleaning up the room.”

“My favorite is 'The Lion SleepsTonight,' which we use for our readingsection. I actually have a little lion puppetnamed 'Leo' who comes out when I playthe song and the kids settle down on the

carpet and Leo helps us learn our reading,”said Anders.

“I had attended an Association forSupervision and Curriculum Developmentconference two years ago and learned ofRon Nash, who wrote the book ‘TheActive Classroom,’” said Principal MaryJane Carico. “The purpose of his book is tohelp energize students and teachers in theprocess of learning. Nash’s philosophy isthat learning should be active, contempla-tive, dynamic, purposeful, spontaneous

and safe, among other things.”“Upon return from the conference, we

ordered ‘The Active Classroom’ for all ofthe teachers at school and started pilotingthe program in 2009. We had Ron Nashcome and speak at an in-service event thisyear and have started to incorporate musicinto our classrooms,” said Carico.

“The classroom and the program tookoff from that point. The faculty continuesto grow and utilize music in the classroom.

I have seen a lot ofexcited children getting involved in theirclassrooms and using music is a very pos-itive way for us to instruct our students.”

Walk into Mrs. Lineberry's third gradeclassroom and 'Laudate Dominum', per-formed by St. Cecelia's Symphony, signals

that it is thinking time. “The kids knowthat when I am playing ‘thinking’ music,that they are not to be talking or be withtheir partners doing group work. They areto be doing their work and thinking. Itreally relaxes them,” said Lineberry.

Additionally, each morning, Lineberryplays The Beatles’ ‘Come Together’ andthis signals her students to automaticallyget out their ‘Come Together’ checklist,which includes beginning of the day taskssuch as getting homework out of their

folders, putting book bags and lunch boxesin cubbies, having pencils sharpened andgreeting at least two other classmates with‘Good Morning.’ At the end of each day,students in Mrs. Lineberry's class knowthat when Ray Charles’ ‘Hit the Road’starts playing, it is time to get out their ‘Hitthe Road’ checklist, which includes:homework is in folders ready to go home,desks are cleared, all trash is picked up andthrown away and various other end-of-the-day tasks have been completed.

Another first grade teacher, Ms.Lintecum, plays a lot of songs from Greg& Steve, including ‘I Can’t Sit Still’ tohelp get the “willies out.”

“Music has opened the students up somuch. They get more out of school andtheir personalities shine through when themusic plays and they start to sing or dance.This is a way to incorporate many differ-ent children with many different learningstyles and help them to really feel a part ofthe classroom,” said Lintecum.
