sTUDENT DEVELOPMENT & VOLUNTEERING oFFICERInês Boski Student Development & Volunteering Manifesto 9 III 2011

Development.Definitely a sparking word which evokes motion, action. If I get elected, this is precisely theidea I want to use and work on in my time as a Student Development and Volunteering Officerat Royal Holloway University of London.

Royal Holloway provides many different opportunities apart from the academic ones. They range from spaces available for people’s use to projects in which people can participate. This last part is an important feature of what the student experience can be for an individualbut also how it can benefit others.

In recent years SURHUL has been improving much on the grounds of volunteering andstudent activities. Expanding these projects, working on new ones, stimulating and promotingstudent ideas for projects and participation is a challenging task which I am prepared toundertake and develop.

In the past I’ve been a volunteer myself. I have worked as a volunteer in Brazil for 6months as a social worker in a foster home for teenager drug addicts and as an accountant inan Institute for Diabetic Children. Both jobs gave me much inspiration for futureimplementation of constructive action particularly when I started studying at Royal Holloway.

Being an international student from the EU, I’m also interested in integrating studentsfrom all over the world in the projects offered by Royal Holloway and the Students’ Union, whether in on going ones or new ones. This would require contact with those students to seewhat would their primary interests be and possibly apply them in practice.

In order to better engage with the student body as to what volunteering is, I wouldconsider better and more dynamic advertisement of the volunteering projects, activities andplans going on. In this process I would also like to promote the idea of volunteering activitiesbeing a good, enjoyable, socially beneficial experience one can get and not (only) a side jobone can get to promote itself on his curriculum vitae.

Finally, I truly believe in people’s power to change and shape the world to try andmake it a better place for all people with due respect to the natural environment. This idealapplies at a global as well as at a local level. Royal Holloway is yet to expand itself as such aplace.
