2009Surgical Education Week

Surgical Education Week 20092

Surgical Education Week (April 28-May 2, 2008), the joint enterprise of APDS, ASE and ARCS, heads west this spring, convening in Salt Lake City (historically, the site of the 1988 APDS Meeting, as well as the 1986 ASE Meeting) at the Grand America Hotel. For a second successive year, the Association of Program Directors in Vascular Surgery (APDVS) will also participate with us. With a new year, and a new administration and Congress come fresh looks at old issues as well as new challenges for Medicare GME funding and resolves for broad health care reform. Certainly, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report has stunned many and shaken concepts central to the residency model of educating young surgeons.

The ASE program starts first this year, beginning on Tuesday afternoon, with the annual “What’s New in Surgical Education” lecture being presented this year by Linnea Hauge, PhD, followed by a session that will include eight papers, and concluding with a session on “Using Simulation in Medical Student Education.” Wednesday’s program includes an ASE paper session, as well as six mini-oral presentations, to be followed by a panel session entitled “Does the Creative Outlet Impact on the Surgeon as Educator?” Dr. Barry Mann will then give the ASE Presidential Address. This will be followed by an ASE Business Luncheon. The afternoon will be devoted to 10 different ASE workshops, including the current status and the future of surgical simulation, coaching toward excellence in professionalism and effective communication and improving patient safety by empowering students and residents.

On Tuesday, April 28, APDS will again offer an optional program component which most new program directors find to be one of the more indispensable elements of Surgical Education Week — the APDS Program Directors Workshop. This program will start Tuesday at noon and continue through all day Wednesday. It brings together all the key materials (in a sizeable take-home work-book), as well as practical experience, advice and insights, and is equally appropriate for new program directors as well as being a refresher course for those with many years of experience.

The morning of the joint program day on Thursday will be headlined by Ara Tekian, PhD, from the University of Illinois-Chicago who will deliver the annual J. Roland Folse lecture entitled “Enhancing Patient Safety Through the Use of Simulation,” along with two sessions comprising nine papers. The luncheon period will feature the ASE “Thinking Out of the Box” session. On Thursday afternoon APDS and ASE are very pleased to welcome Dr. Thomas Nasca, the Executive Director of the ACGME, for a special key-note address. The joint day will conclude with a panel looking at the IOM report on resident duty hours followed by an additional six papers.

On Friday morning, the APDS program will start with a panel, including Dr. Tom Fogarty, examining the ethical interactions with industry in surgical education and research. The APDS Presidential Address by Dr. George Fuhrman is entitled “Baseball’s Lessons for Surgical Education,” and the morning session will conclude with a paper session and a report on the SCORE (surgical curricu-lum) project from Dr. Richard Bell, the Assistant Executive Director of the American Board of Surgery. Friday afternoon will offer attendees their choice among two rounds of eight concurrent APDS workshops followed by a paper session and an APDS panel looking at the Caribbean and Osteopathic Medical Schools and their students. The Saturday morning session will consist of updates from the RRC and ABS, a joint APDS/APDVS Panel session that will provide a range of perspectives on the question, “How Much Non-General Surgery Does the General Surgery Resident Need?” as well as six papers.

The ARCS program features a special Wednesday afternoon ARCS New Coordinators Workshop, followed by the first of three sessions featuring perspectives from American Board of Surgery leadership — the first one from Barbara Jalbert-Gerkens, the ABS Examination Coordinator. The ARCS program will continue in sessions that overlap with the APDS sessions on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There will be dedicated ARCS time on Thursday morning with two ABS briefings — one on general policies, as well as an update on the SCORE curriculum — concluding with “Key Tenets of NRMP Policy” by Laurie S. Curtin, PhD, the Director of Match Policy for NRMP. The ARCS program also includes unique ARCS features such as presentations on how to effectively plan for and navigate the ACGME annual program review, an ABS study on attrition and surgical residencies, and break-out sessions addressing the surgical skills lab, your ACGME site visit, and common and specialty program requirements. ARCS attendees will have an RRC update that will include recent changes on RRC scholarly activity requirements, an ACGME Operative Log update and Friday afternoon break-outs offering a choice among power point presentations, goals and objectives for professional develop-ment, recruitment strategies, and a special session for subspecialty coordinators. Saturday morning’s ARCS wrap-up will include the popular “Coordinators Jeopardy” program.

Spring will be fully alive in Salt Lake City by the time we arrive in late April, and while the program is a full one, the opportunity to enjoy a stroll to the Mormon Tabernacle, or visit the majesty of the nearby mountains, ski resorts, or natural wonders of this abun-dant natural area may go a long way to re-charging batteries, or to getting a full breath of spring.

Registration details are enclosed. You can register for each of the three groups’ meetings, or there is a single fee option which entitles you to attend any and all APDS, ARCS, and ASE events from Tuesday noon through Saturday (separate registration is needed for the Tuesday and Wednesday APDS Program Directors Workshop). Again, we extend a special welcome to our APDVS colleagues as well as the vascular program coordinators attending this year’s meeting. We hope you’ll register early and join us!
