2 Surgical Education Week 2020

Surgical Education Week April 28-May 2, 2020

Westin Seattle, Seattle, Washington Association for Surgical Education

Association of Program Directors in Surgery Association of Residency Administrators in Surgery

Dear Colleagues:

Surgical Education Week (April 28-May 2, 2020) will occur in downtown Seattle this spring for meetings at the Westin Seattle. The 2020 Joint Meeting of the ASE, APDS and ARAS focuses our attention on the multiple opportunities and challenges of surgical education in the changing health care environment which provide a wealth of new opportunities and challenges. Please block off April 28-May 2 now and begin to make your flight reservations.

Moshen Shahbang, Kyla Terhune and Donna Heyduk have done a terrific job in crafting creative educational components for our program. On Monday ASE will begin with four special programs—Troubleshooting Your Clerkship, ASE Communication Skills for Surgeon Leaders, ASE Fundamentals of Teaching and Tools of the Trade: Building and Maximizing your Simulation Center’s Potential [separate registration required for each]. The main ASE program meets Tuesday, April 28, all-day Wednesday, April 29, and concludes at 12:00pm on Thursday, April 30. Beginning on Tuesday at 12:00pm, the ASE portion of the meeting will get underway with the ASE Panel Session - Great Debates: “Checking the Box” to Changing the Culture: Implementation of Best Practices in Physician Wellness hosted by the Graduate Surgical Education Committee followed by the J. Roland Folse Lectureship. The afternoon will include a podium session, ASE Poster Session, Candlelight Session and a Social Event at Pike Brewing Company (ticketed event, see registration form for pricing). Wednesday morning opens with a podium session followed by a panel session on Artificial Intelligence hosted by the Technology Committee, concluding the morning’s education with the ASE Presidential Address. Wednesday’s lunch will have the perennial and ever-popular “Thinking Out of the Box” luncheon. On Wednesday afternoon, ASE attendees will have their choice of attending a series of twelve different workshops being offered. The educational program will be followed by a panel session on Global Surgical Education, ASE Business Meeting and concluding with a podium session. Wednesday evening there will be a Joint Reception for all attendees followed by the ASE Banquet and Awards. Thursday morning will begin with a parallel session, followed by the Laycock Lecture and wrapping up with an ASE/APDS Joint Panel USMLE Step 1 Scoring: Time for Change?. On Tuesday, April 28th at 12:00pm, the APDS will again offer the APDS Program Directors Workshop, spearheaded by Course Directors Drs. Ben Jarman and Albert Chahine, an optional opportunity which most Program Directors find to be an indispensable element of Surgical Education Week. This program runs from 12:00pm on Tuesday through Wednesday until 4:00pm, and brings together key materials as well as practical experience, advice, and insights, and is equally appropriate for new Program Directors as well as serving as a refresher course for experienced PDs. The Joint ASE, APDS, ARAS Reception will be held on Wednesday, April 29th at 6:00pm. Thursday morning, the joint ASE/APDS program day beings with ASE parallel sessions on Simulation, Teaching Method, Assessment and Workforce, Recruitment, Wellness followed by the Laycock Lecture and concluding with the ASE/APDS Joint Panel Session. The APDS kicks off at 1:00pm with opening remarks from APDS President, David Harrington, MD and Kyla Terhune, MD, APDS Program Chair. The afternoon begins with a panel session titled Topics in Resident Application and Recruitment followed by back to back paper sessions. The afternoon will conclude with the APDS Business Meeting and Poster Sessions from 6:00pm-7:00pm. Friday morning APDS will begin with a panel session on Recruiting, Sustaining and Launching Preliminary Surgery Residents followed by a special session on case conferences with breakouts for discussion, continuing with 18 lunch workshops, a panel session “Holding the Middle: Why General Surgery is So Important and concluding with a paper session and the Presidential Address “Next Steps” by APDS President David Harrington. Saturday morning opens with 12 Quick Shots presentations followed by the APDS Keynote Address, Admiral Peter Cressy, Co-Director, George Washington Leadership, Mount Vernon, Virginia “Advice from George Washington-Charting an Evolving Future” and concluding with the ever popular Alphabet Soup Panel. The ARAS program starts Wednesday morning with the ARAS New Administrators Workshop. Wednesday will conclude with ARAS registrants participating in the Joint ASE/APDS/ARAS Welcoming Reception. The main ARAS program begins Thursday at 7:45am with ARAS President, Donna Heyduk, followed by ARAS Keynote Speaker Juanita Braxton. Thursday will consist of lectures on Retention, Residency Closure, Professional Development and concluding with an update from the American Board of Surgery. On Friday a series of educational sessions will take place beginning with an overview of SCORE and ACGME followed by a Professional Development session. The afternoon will conclude with breakout sessions and APDS/ARAS Joint Panel Session Holding the Middle and concludes with the APDS Presidential Address “Next Steps” by APDS President David Harrington. Saturday morning will include several education sessions followed by the APDS Keynote Address and concludes with the APDS Alphabet Soup Panel Session. Registration details are enclosed. You can register for one group’s meeting or choose the single fee option which entitles you to attend any and all ASE, APDS or ARAS events from Tuesday through Saturday at noon. Separate registration is needed for the APDS New Program Directors Workshop, the ARAS New Coordinators Workshop, any of the ASE Wednesday Pre-Meeting Courses and the ASE “Thinking Out of the Box” luncheon.

We hope that you will find Surgical Education Week 2020 informative and motivating. We know that you will enjoy spending time with your fellow surgical educators and we look forward to seeing you in Seattle.

4 Surgical Education Week 2020

This offering has the objective to provide professional development and educational/curricular tools for Surgery Clerkship Directors and Coordinators to run and improve their clerkship offerings as well as to provide resources, strategies and examples of curricular offerings, administrative guidance, and peer troubleshooting for their unique needs.

This highly interactive half day pre-meeting course uses a case-based approach to the fundamentals of teaching. It is designed for those taking on a new teaching role or who would like to enhance their abilities as a clinical teacher. The session will cover teaching in the operating room, giving feedback and using simulation. Participants will leave with new skills, knowledge and energy they

can apply to their learners. Coordinators Track Program

"Communication Skills for Surgeon Leaders" is a simulation-based pre-conference workshop targeting important aspects of leadership in an increasingly interprofessional and interdisciplinary team environment. The workshop will be a combination of group discussions and simulated scenarios focusing on leaderships skills as they pertain to key leadership topics including emotional intelligence, feedback and mentorship. In addition to participation in leadership-based simulation scenarios, participants will be given an introduction to multiple adjunct tools to assist in developing communication skills including reflective practices, modeling behaviors and mindfulness activities.

The number of simulation centers is expanding across the country as the role for simulation- based education continues to grow exponentially. Whether you are starting a new simulation program or trying to improve upon an existing one, this course will give you the pearls you need to maximize your simulation center’s potential. Topics will range from basic program start-up considerations to identifying the role for new and emerging technologies, describing innovative strategies to build and expand your educational curriculum, and sharing best practices. This comprehensive course will appeal to surgeons, surgeon educators and simulation leaders alike. Each section will include presentations by national leaders in surgical simulation and will conclude with a panel discussion. The course will conclude with an informal breakout session where participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and obtain advice to bring back to their home institutions.

The Assessment, Curriculum, and Evaluation Committee is pleased to announce that The Thinking Out the Box lunch session will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 2020. Ideas presented in the Thinking Out of the Box session include, but are not limited to, creative teaching methods, new assessment tools, practical faculty development programs, new usage of information technology in the educational enterprise and innovations for interdisciplinary educational courses. On Wednesday evening, April 29, the ASE banquet will be held at the Westin Seattle at 7:00pm. The registration fee for ASE and SEW meeting attendees includes admission to this event; one admission per registrant will be included in with meeting registration. Additional tickets can be purchased for $125 each.

The New Program Director’s Workshop will be offered before the APDS meeting. This will take place on Tuesday, April 28, from 11:30 am to 7:30 pm, and on Wednesday, April 29, from 7:25 am to 4:00 pm [separate registration required]. The dynamic workshop will include a review of key ABS, RRC, ACGME and other requirements impacting surgery residency programs. All Program Directors, whether new or with experience, and Associate Program Directors are encouraged to register for this special program. A cocktail reception will be held Tuesday at the conclusion of the session at 6:30pm. Program materials will be distributed via dropbox so participants are encouraged to bring an appropriate electronic device that will allow for viewing.

APDS Workshops will be held on Friday, May 1. Session 1 begins at 12:00 pm, and Session 2 starts at 1:00 pm. Box lunches will be provided during APDS Workshop Session I.

On Wednesday, April 29, from 7:00 am–5:00 pm, there will be a special workshop for all new Residency Administrators [separate registration required-workshop is only for administrators that have been in surgery residency less than 3 years]. Administrators will attend special presentations, panels and breakout sessions. Continental Breakfast on Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be provided for meeting registrants. Registration also includes admission to the Wednesday evening joint cocktail reception for all groups.
