- Angle Towers with 30-60 deg deviation
An optical fibre is a thin, long, transparent material (usually made of glass or plastic) that confines and propagates light waves. Fibre optics use light pulses to transmit information down fibre lines. At one end of the system is a transmitter.
This is the place of origin for information coming on to fibre optic lines. The transmitter accepts coded electronic pulse information coming from copper wire.
OPGW[Optical Power Ground Wire]
- Provide Grounding & protection form lightning stroke
- Used in SCADA network
- Requires long term outage
-Expensive
WRAP
- Hot line installation is difficult
- Cost more than ADSS, but less than OPGW
- Need Shield Wire
- No operational problem is observed
ADSS[Aerial Dielectric Slef-Supported]
- Installed at the center of Pylons/ Poles/ Structures
- Cost much less than OPGW or WRAP type
- Suitable for hot line installation without de-energization of line
- Large Fibre capacity

Wind Velocity and Aeolian Vibration
Aeolian Vibration is caused by low velocitywind blowing across a cylindrical conductorunder tension. Vibration dampers helpcontrolling Aeolian vibrations and iecinduced galloping effects.
ADSS Installation Technique
Corona Effect
Corona discharge on ADSS cable generallyoccurs due to generates of high electrical fieldand in the long run causes puncture and failureof cable jacket. For protection of the cable weprovide corona rings/ coils.
Space Potential Effect
High voltage conductor induces space potential on fiberoptic cable.
The voltage difference between the grounded armor rodand cable generates a longitudinal
If the jacket is covered by a conductive layer, the voltagedrives a surface current along the cable.
Environmental
- Wind Velocity and Aeolian Vibration
-Sheath Composition for UV Resistance
- Temperature and Pollution Level
Dry-Band Arcing
Installation of fiber optic cable on transmission line structure at a distance of 3-6meterbelow the high voltage line is a general practice, which is considered to be a major costsaving installation process.Due to this relative geometric position of the cable and highvoltage line, there is a capacitive coupling between the HV line (which is at phasepotential) & fiber optic cable (Which is a earth potential due to grounding of armour rodused for gripping the cable). The electric field caused by the high voltage line isconsidered to be the driving force to the flow of electron through the contaminated layerthat accumulates on the fiber optic cable as a result of its exposure to the pollutedatmosphere in a long run. The electron flows towards the grounded armour rod andgenerates certain amount of heat, which may dry the wet contaminated layer if there is norain fall or small quantity of moisture in the atmosphere resulting formation of smalldry-bank near the armour rod causing an obstruction to the flow of electrons. Whenvoltage difference across this band crosses the threshold level, electric area known as dry-bank arcing gets generated causing degradation to the outer sheath and eventually the load carrying layer of the cable. The continuation of such effect in a long run can causethe cable to tear under its own weight. To remove dry-band Arcing suspended armour rod assemblies with non-ceramic insulator is being used to break the are current paths.
Advantages of Fiber Optic Cables over TraditionalWire Cables
- Easier and Cheaper installation
- Many more fibers and channels per cable
- Uses light signals
- Consumes low power
- Carries digital signals
- Not-inflammable and flexible
- Does not cause EMI effect (Electro Magnetic Interference)
- Easier to access without transmission circuit outage
- Easier and faster to repair and ideal for using in existing network
- Does not experience temperature rise in the event of lightning strike.
- Quick installation with no R.O.W. Clearance required
- Can be easily installed on road/ river crossing and hilly areas

IS:10162-1982 defines Spacer dampers as mechanical components fitted at specified intervals on transmission lineshaving more than one sub-conductor per phase to perform all functions of a spacer and in addition control Aeolianvibrations and sub-span oscillations within permissible limits.
Testing of Quad Spacer Dampers
The spacer damper shall be designed as per IEC 61854 specifications stated below:
Maintain subconductor spacing, within any prescribed limits, under all conditions of service excluding short-circuit currents.
Prevent, in subspans between spacers, physical contact between subconductors, except during the passage of short-circuit currents when thepossibility of contact is accepted provided that specified spacing is restored immediately following fault clearance.
Avoid damage to subconductor under specified conditions.
To be free from unacceptable levels of corona and radio interference under specified service conditions.
Withstand mechanical loads imposed on the spacer damper during installation, maintenance and service without any component failure orunacceptable permanent deformation.
Be suitable for safe and easy installation. For the bolted and latching clamp the design shall retain all parts when opened or attached to theconductor.
Ensure the individual components do not become loose in service.
Be capable of being removed and re-installed without damage to spacers or subconductors.
Maintain its function over entire service temperature range.
 Avoid audible noise.
