SUPPORTINGTHE ARTS
Welcome to USF SculptureWalk. The University of Sioux Falls celebrates the arts as a central component to its liberal arts education. The tradition of the liberal arts remains a foundational
anchor in our identity as a university, as we strive to foster an environment that places an emphasis on the development of the whole person.
We believe in the value of cultivating a knowledge and appreciation for the visual and performing arts by encouraging our students to participate in our programs such as art, music and theatre.
Just like these programs, the USF SculptureWalk provides an opportunity to let the arts transform you. So join us and take a visual journey through campus!

RA by Patricia Vader β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β
Ra, the Egyptian sun god, was inspired by what I found in my inventory of steel wheels and hubs.

Water Cobblestones by Brian McCormick β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β
Swimming among the lily pads as a boy was an everyday occurrence during the summer at my parentβs cabin in Northern Minnesota. We all have seen them on the water β they look like cobblestones. I loved the thought of standing beneath the lily pads to catch a glimpse from below.
2
Pointing at the Moon by Steven Maeck β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β
The aesthetic intent of my work is not to create βjunkyard art,β but to take industrial artifacts and alter or recombine them in such a manner as to create work that is not only resonant and original but also manifests the aura of having been created.
3
Endless Summer by Gregory Johnson β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β
The figure moves with the season.

Harp by Crysten Nesseth β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β
Harp of strings, blown by the wind, reverberates a shivering hum. A hallow tree, beat with broken branches, pulsates like a drum. The din of steel, a wasted reprise, from industry, music will come.

Beetle the Bear by Cedar Mueller β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β
It will come as no surprise that I love animals. I love the different personality of each animal. When I have completed a sculpture, I know Iβve done a good job when it has its βpersonality,β and people can connect with it. Beetle the Bear is made from the hood of an old Volkswagen Beetle and other found parts. Donβt forget to look for the VW insignia on his tail!

Echo by Osamede Obazee β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β
The metrical wave of sound, forms and space
echo through the reflection of mind to reality.

Seahorse by Crysten Nesseth β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β
Waves whisper desires for discovery, probing life for the glimmer of ethereal beings. Here, seemingly so insignificant with tendrils clinging to minute architecture, a silhouette reminiscent of my terrestrial companions. Weightless, just breathing. I pursue balance in the presence of such wonder.

Flight by Lance Carleton β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β
You might say this piece gained wings and
became this convoy of birds in flight.

In this case, an Owl was selected in a lyrical pose
on top of stack of books with his reading glasses.
This is not a common sight, but I thought it was
humorous, simple and elegant.

A new campus tradition. USF SculptureWalk was dedicated on April 29, 2011, to former First Lady Gail Benedetto as an expression of gratitude from the Board of Trustees for her faithful service to USF.
The sculptures, which are ownedby the artists, are on loan to the exhibit for one year. Each spring new sculptures are selected for display.
Students, faculty and staff vote every fall for the Peopleβs Choice Award, with the winner receiving a cash prize. Watch your campus email this fall and vote!
Wings by Felix Velez β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β
Velez had no formal training in art, just a drive, a love of his faith and a sense of adventure. He draws his ideas and creativity from nature. Wildlife and the human figure are his favorite subjects. βGod has created the human body, and it is interesting with its muscles and movements. The main thing is to capture the moment and make it lifelike.β

Leaf Lady by Albert Belleveau β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β
The leaf vortices that swirl around in the fall seem to have a feminine quality about them, and they are portrayed in this sculpture.
B
Cougar by Doug Baer β67 β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β
Doug Baer, a 1967 graduate of Sioux Falls College, created this sculpture to represent a larger-than-life mascot for the school. βTo me, a wildlife animal isnβt a zoo study,β he says. βPhoto realism is just a rendering like a camera. To me when Iβm around wildlife, theyβre on the move. Theyβre looking, listening or adjusting.β
C
Science by Alan Newberg β66 β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β βPresident Reuben Jeschke (1953-1970) and science professor Dr. John Butler (1963-1974) commissioned Sioux Falls College senior Alan Newberg to complete a monumental sculpture to commemorate the dedication of the Salsbury Science Center in 1967. The corten steel sculpture involves three vanes representing physics, chemistry and biology; these vanes are connected by a central ring that structurally and symbolically unites them.
E
Cross Section by Paul T. Granlund β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β β βThis sculpture, commissioned in memory of Joseph E. Salsbury, was presented to Sioux Falls College by John and Doris Salsbury. Granlund says, βSpace shapes intersect the prisms to form a composite cross of geometric masses and shapes. Christ is invisible on this cross; in His place are two human figures.β
