Manchester ship canal

• Peel Ports, owners of the Port of Liverpool and Manchester Shipping Canal, is now in the midst of a £300 million scheme, which will see a new container terminal built in the north-west, known as the Liverpool2 project. Further investment is also expected for improvements at the Manchester Ship Canal

• According to figures reported by the BBC, shipping via the canal has increased from 3,000 containers in 2009 to 25,000 in 2013. It is hoped that this could increase to 100,000 by 2030, with Peel providing necessary improvement work to achieve this.

• The Liverpool2 facility is expected to open in 2015 and is expected to connect the north of the UK with Ireland, bringing in a market estimated at four million TEU every year.
