Attachment2:EquipmentandmethodsusedSurveyseismicreflectionmethodsIdentifyingandinterpretingsedimentswithusefulpalaeoclimaticrecordsrequiresacousticimagingoftheseafloorwitharangeofequipment.Thesurveyplanstouseamultibeambathymetricechosoundertomapseafloortopographyandasubbottomprofilertoidentifysurfacesedimentssuitableforshallowcoring.Toidentifythickerdepositssuitableforlongcoresandtounderstandhowthesedepositsformed,itwillbenecessarytouseahigh-resolutionseismic,airgun-basedsystem.Thissystemwilluse2highfrequencyairgunsasasourceandashorthydrophonestreamertoimagetheuppertensofmetersofthecontinentalslope.Seismiclineswillbecollectedalongselectedtransectsacrossthestudyareaandwillrepresentapproximately20%(7days)oftheplanned37daysinthearea.SourcecharacteristicsandexposurethresholdsThesurveywilluse2SercelGenerator-Injector(GI)airgunswithacombinedcapacityof6.88litres.Thisrepresentsavolumeofabout10%ofatypicalairgunarraysusedinpetroleumindustrysurveys.GIgunscanbeusedinairgunmodewheretheentirevolumeisusedtogeneratesound,orinGIgunmodewhereabout60%oftheairisinjectedintotheinitialbubbletopreventbubblecollapseandproduceacleanersignal.Theairgunswillbetowedabout30mbehindthevesselsduringdataacquisition.Breitzkeetal.(2008)measuredthesourcelevelofasingleGI-guninairgunmodeandfoundasourcesoundexposurelevelof202dBre1μ[email protected],findingasoundexposurelevelof211dBre1μ[email protected],wehaveestimatedthesourcelevelof2GIgunsasdoublethatofonei.e.208dBre1μPa2s@1m.ThissourcelevelisbelowthethresholdforinjuryforasinglepulsesuggestedbySouthalletal(2007)andbelowthelevelforinjuryformultiplepulseswithinafewmetersoftheguns.ItalsomeansthattheDepartmentofEnvironmentpreferredthresholdforTemporaryThresholdShift(TTS)inwhalehearingof160dBre1μPa2s@1misreachedat251mfromthesourceassumingsphericalspreadingofthesound.ThismeansthattheTTSthresholdwillbereachedinacirclemuchlessthan1kmandthatextendsabout130metersinfrontofthevessel.The2GIgunarrayhasasourcelevelcomparabletosomenaturalsoundsourcesinAntarcticwaters.Icebergsproducesourcelevelsof220-245dBre1μPa-rms@1mwithsimilarfrequencycontenttoairguns(Matsumotoetal.2014).AsingleGIgunsproduces216dBre1μPa-rms@1mand3GIgunsproduce225dBre1μPa-rms@1m(Breitzkeetal.2008).

Insummary,theseismicsourcefortheproposedsurveywillproducesoundpulseswhichwillbewithintherangeofnaturalsourcesandbelowTTSlevelsbeyond251mfromtheairgun.EPBCActProtectedMattersEPBCActProtectedMattersreportlists3speciesofcetaceanandanumberofprotectedseabirdsinthearea.Theseabirdswillnotbeaffectedbythesurveybecauseitinvolvesnofishingactivities,iswellawayfrompotentialbreedingsitesandthevesselhasbestpractisewastemanagementplansthatpreventdischargesthatmayattractbirds.Theinteractionwithcetaceanwillbeminimisedassetoutbelow.CetaceansinthesurveyareaTheAntarcticcontinentalmarginisanimportantfeedinggroundformanyspeciesofcetaceanhoweveritisdifficulttoassessthenumberslikelytobeencounteredinanyparticularareaaroundthecontinent.Theregionisverylargeandthedistributionofcetaceansnotuniform.Studiesthathaveattemptedtodeterminethedistributionofwhalesexpresstheirfindingsas“Encountersperarea”(Kasamatsuetal.1996),sightingsper1000km(Branchetal.2007)orthepopulationforagivenspeciesinabroadarea(Branch2011).Wehaveusedsuchpublishedestimatestoderiveawhaleperunitareafiguretothencalculatethelikelynumberencounteredbytheseismiccomponentofthesurvey.Thetableprovideddoesnotallowfractionssosomespeciesarelistedat0whenthereisasmallbutfiniteprobabilityofanencounterwith1whale.Forexample,Branchetal.(2007)expressedtheencounterrateofBlueWhalesas0.17-.52per1000km.Thusthesurveymightencounter0.26-0.8BlueWhales.Thenatureofencounterswiththeproposedsurveywillalsobedifferenttoencountersbycetaceansurveys.Indedicatedcetaceansurveys,anencounterisanobservationwithinavisualradiusfromtheobservership.ThisobservableradiusismuchlargerthantheTTSradiusfortheGIguns.Thecalculatedencounterednumbersmeansasmallnumberofwhalescouldbewithinaudiblerangeoftheairgun.ThesurveywilltargetasmallproportionofthetotalAntarcticmarginhabitatusedbycetaceans.ThesmallsourcewillbeaudibletoafewwhalesthatrepresentasmallproportionofthetotalwhalepopulationusingAntarcticwaters.Thoughaudible,thesourcewillnotexceedTTSlevelsunlessawhaleisveryclosetotheairgun(<251m).Thiswillbemanagedbystandardmitigationstrategies.MitigationmethodsAirgunseismicreflectiondatawillonlybecollectedduringdaylighthours.ThesurveypersonnelwillincludeadedicatedMarineMammalObserverwhowillbeonthebridgeduringseismicoperationssothatmitigationmethodssetoutinEPBCActPolicyStatement2.1-Interactionsbetweenoffshoreseismicexplorationandwhales,AustralianGovernment,DepartmentofEnvironment,September2008,willbeapplied.

Not all species listed under the EPBC Act have been mapped (see below) and therefore a report is a general guide only.Where available data supports mapping, the type of presence that can be determined from the data is indicated in generalterms. People using this information in making a referral may need to consider the qualifications below and may need to seekand consider other information sources.

For threatened ecological communities where the distribution is well known, maps are derived from recovery plans, Statevegetation maps, remote sensing imagery and other sources. Where threatened ecological community distributions are lesswell known, existing vegetation maps and point location data are used to produce indicative distribution maps.

Such breeding sites may be important for the protection of the Commonwealth Marine environment.

For species where the distributions are well known, maps are digitised from sources such as recovery plans and detailedhabitat studies. Where appropriate, core breeding, foraging and roosting areas are indicated under 'type of presence'. Forspecies whose distributions are less well known, point locations are collated from government wildlife authorities, museums,and non-government organisations; bioclimatic distribution models are generated and these validated by experts. In somecases, the distribution maps are based solely on expert knowledge.

The information presented in this report has been provided by a range of data sources as acknowledged at the end of thereport.
