    Bayview Opera House Raises $3,000 for Arts Education

    The Bayview Opera House is extremely grateful for all who helped make this possibleWith their Dare to Dream ARTS program, Bayview children come to the Opera Houseto learn the arts, including singing, dancing, cooking, and gardening. The program isstill accepting tax-deductible donations.

    Celebrating the Life of Warren HellmanSan Francisco native, venture capitalist, billionaire, and Bay Area political advocateWarren Hellman passed away on December 18, 2011, of complications fromLeukemia. Hellman co-founded the private equity firm Hellman & Friedman, a multi-billion dollar firm. Hellman fought for the parking garage that helped keep the DeYoung museum from leaving Golden Gate Park, and founded the Hardly StrictlyBluegrass festival. Hellman also helped found and served as Chairman of the Boardfor the online journalistic enterprise The Bay Citizen. Recently, Speedway Meadowwas renamed Hellman Meadow in recognition of his philanthropy and civicinvolvement in San Francisco.

    Kwanzaa Celebration at City Hall

    On December 28th city residents came together to celebrate Kwanzaa in the City HallRotunda. Supervisor Cohen enjoyed celebrating the holiday while lighting theKwanzaa candles, hearing the speakers, and watching the performances. Thank youso much to all those who participated to make this celebration special.

    Bayview Police Station Reports Impressive Gun Seizure Numbers

    Gun violence poses one of the biggest dangers to our communities, over the past yeathe Bayview Police Station has continued to work to take guns off our streets. FromDecember 2010 to December 2011, Bayview officers removed over 400 weapons fromthe streets. Pistols constituted the majority of these seized guns, while riflesaccounted for another 20 percent. Thanks to Captain Paul Chignell and his entireteam.

    San Francisco Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

    San Franciscans from every neighborhood honored Dr. Kings legacy on January 16 thby participating in parades, prayer services, community service projects, mealstogether, and educational programs for children. Supervisor Cohen was honored tojoin to the San Francisco Interfaith Commemoration at Yerba Buena Gardens followedby the Childrens Reading Festival.

    Blue Greenway Gets Stronger

    The Blue Greenway and San Francisco Parks Alliance were awarded $20,505 fromUCSF in January to continue building and improvements. The Blue Greenway is a traialong the Southeast shore that provides access for exercise, recreation and openspace all along District 10, from Dogpatch to Bayview.

    San Francisco 49ers Make it NFC Championship GameCongratulations to our 49ers who made it to the National Football Conference (NFC)championship game this season! Although we hoped for a different outcome, it wasan exciting season and San Francisco was honored to host the championship game inour very own Candlestick Park.

    District 10 Redistricting Task Force Meeting SuccessfulOn January 26th the San Francisco Redistricting Task Force met at the SoutheastCommunity Facility to discuss where the new supervisorial district lines will be drawn.The meeting was well attended by people from all corners of District 10, as well asrepresentation from neighboring districts. Based on the 2010 Census data, District 10

The goal of redistricting the maps in SanFrancisco is to make the median size of all 11 supervisorial districts 73,203 people.The Board of Supervisors convened the Task Force to carry out the requiredredistricting with members appointed by the Elections Commission, the Board ofSupervisors and the Mayor. The Charter vests the Task Force with the responsibility ofredrawing supervisorial district boundaries by April 15, 2012.     Ed Lee Sworn In As Mayor

    Mayor Ed Lee, previously serving as Interim Mayor was sworn in as Mayor on SundayJanuary 8th. With his inauguration, Ed Lee became the first elected Asian-Americanmayor of San Francisco. In his speech, Mayor Lee stated that he came in determinedto bring a new level of stability to City Hall and focused his remarks on theimportance of innovation and job creation. Congratulations, Mayor Lee!

    Mayor Lee Selects Christina Olague as District 5 Supervisor

    Mayor Lee appointed Christina Olague as District 5 Supervisor to represent theWestern Addition, Fillmore, and Haight neighborhoods. Supervisor Olague is filling the

    vacancy left by Ross Mirkarimi with his departure for sheriff. Supervisor Olaguepreviously served as Planning Commission President and as community organizer forthe Senior Action Network. She has a strong reputation advocating for tenants andimmigrants rights. With her appointment, four of the eleven members of the Board ofSupervisors are female. Supervisor Cohen looks forward to working with her newcolleague on improving San Francisco.

    Supervisor Cohens 2012 AssignmentsSupervisor Cohen has received new committee assignments for this coming year. She

    will serve as the Vice-Chair of the Land Use and Economic Development Committeeand as a member of the Budget and Finance Committee during this upcoming budgetseason. Additionally, she has recently been appointed to serve on the PeninsulaCorridor Joint Powers Board, which oversees Caltrain projects throughout the City andplays an important role in the development of California's High Speed Rail system.She will continue as a member of the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG),including membership on the Legislation and Government Organization Committee.She will also continue as a commissioner of the Transportation Authority, includingmembership on the Finance Committee.

    Mission Bay Parking Management Plan

    Thanks to everyone for their ongoing engagement on SFMTA's proposed Mission BayParking Management Plan, especially to those that attended the January 13 th publichearing. Supervisor Cohen expressed a number of concerns with the location of someof these parking meters, their potential impact on some of the neighborhoodsProduction, Distribution and Repair (PDR) and small businesses and the lack ofenforcement of current parking restrictions in the south eastern neighborhoods. Sincethe January hearing, SFMTA has put the proposal to install parking meters in thePotrero Hill and Dogpatch Neighborhoods on hold to conduct community outreach.The Supervisor looks forward to continued work with the community and SFMTA tomake this proposal better and hope that you stay involved as well.     CA Supreme Court Eliminates All Redevelopment Agency OperationsOn December 29th, a California Supreme Court ruling dealt a serious blow toredevelopment in San Francisco. The ruling will dissolve all local RedevelopmentAgencies on February 1, 2012, as according to AB 26 (the redevelopmentelimination bill) of the state budget. Redevelopment Agencies play an extremelyimportant role in restoring our shoreline and building new public housingdevelopments. Thankfully, the court ruling allows for projects already in the pipeline tomove ahead as planned, such as the Hunters Point Shipyard-Candlestick Point,Mission Bay, and Transbay projects. Earlier this month the Board of Supervisors

    passed legislation that designated the City as the successor entity that will continue tomanage these continuing projects and the Redevelopment Agencies assets.

    Construction on Islais Creek Motor Coach Facility Project 30% CompleteFor months, the SFMTA has been at work constructing a new hybrid Muni motorcoach maintenance facility at 1301 Cesar Chavez Street, to fuel and wash cars.Phase one of construction, scheduled to take 16 months, is now 30 % complete, andthe project is on track to be completed in July 2012. Once constructed, the facility willallow for an expanded hybrid coach fleet to better serve San Franciscans in a moreeconomically and environmentally friendly fashion.

    Cohen Recognizes the Tuskegee Airmen at the Board of Supervisors

    Supervisor Cohen welcomed the President of the Tuskegee Airmens San FranciscoChapter as well as seven of the original airmen who served during World War II to theBoard of Supervisors meeting on January 24 th. The Airmen were joined by manyfamily members, friends and supporters as they accepted commendations from theBoard of Supervisors and the Mayors Office. The Tuskegee Airmen were the firstAfrican-American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces, during a timewhen segregation policies divided our military and many U.S. states were still subjectto Jim Crow laws. Above Supervisor Cohen is pictured with the seven original airmen;thank you to LeRoy Gillead, James Goodwin, Clyde Grimes, Richard Harder, HaroldHoskins, James Warren, and Les Williams for their service. Sincere thanks also toEdith Roberts for attending in place of her late husband George Roberts. Thank you toDavid Cunningham and Rodney Gillead for helping make this event possible.

    San Francisco Public Library Receives $100,000 to Design a Learning Lab fromThe IMLS and MacArthur FoundationThe Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the John D. and CatherineT. MacArthur Foundation announced San Francisco Public Library as one of 12organizations in the U.S. to receive $100,000 to create a learning lab for middle andhigh school students. The San Francisco Main Library Teen Center/Learning Lab willbe designed to improve digital literacy and to engage young people in hands-onlearning that can help them achieve the 21st Century skills and knowledge they needto succeed in school, careers, and life today.

    San Francisco Public Library already plays a central role in the lives of our citysyouth, as a safe, nurturing place to congregate for after school activities, findhomework help and enjoy access to innovative programs and technology, said City

    Librarian Luis Herrera. With this grant we will be able to fully engage teens in thedigital and online environment, plan for a Teen Center that will offer state-of-the-artexposure to digital resources, provide a framework for learning that inspires creativityand critical thinking skills, and underscore the importance of STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education in our childrens future.

    Center for Youth Wellness and Child Advocacy Center Clears Another HurdleInitial approvals from the Board of Supervisors have been secured for the location ofthe Center for Youth Wellness and Child Advocacy Center on Third Street. This uniquepartnership is between the Bayview Child Health Center, multiple City departments,California Pacific Medical Center, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Tipping Point

    Opportunities

    The Food Guardians Are HiringThe Food Guardians are a group of Bayview Hunters Point residents who advocatefor, promote and create a sustainable food system, including access to healthy foodfor all community residents. The Food Guardians work to create partnerships withcommunity residents, local grocers and corner stores, and community-basedorganizations to create lasting, positive change.
