Addressing the Need for Domestic Violence
ServicesAccordingtothelatestComprehensiveReportonFamilyViolenceinSanFrancisco,reportsofdomesticviolenceinSanFranciscorosesharplyrecently,anddomesticviolence-relateddemandsonCitydepartmentsandcommunityserviceprovidershavesteadilyincreased.
InDecember,IintroducedtwopiecesoflegislationtoincreasetheCitybudgettoaddressthisneed.ThelegislationamendstheCitysbudgetinthecurrentfiscalyear,increasingitby$750,000tohirenewprosecutorsandvictim-witnessadvocatesattheDistrictAttorneysOffice,giveadditionalgrantfundstocommunity-basedorganizationsprovidingassistancetodomesticviolencevictims,fundadomesticviolencepolicycoordinatorwithincitygovernment,andsupportacitywidedomesticviolenceoutreachcampaign.MylegislationwaspassedonfirstreadingatthispastTuesday,andIanticipateittobefinallyapprovedonFebruary26.IwasproudtobeaparticipantintheOneBillionRisingeventyesterday,inwhichSanFranciscojoinedthousandsofcities,towns,andvillagesin197countriestoraiseawarenessaboutviolenceagainstwomen.

aresolutiontourgeCongresstorepealtheindefinitedetentionprovisionsintheNationalDefenseAuthorizationAct(NDAA)thatallowthemilitarytoarrestanddetainAmericancitizensonUSsoilwithoutawarrantordueprocess-provisionsthatviolatethe5thAmendmentsdueprocessrights,6thAmendmentsrighttofairtrialsand8thAmendmentsprohibitionagainstcruelandunusualpunishment.WhileIdonotoftensponsorresolutionsonfederalissues,asweapproachthe71stanniversaryoftheincarceration
of120,000JapaneseAmericansduringWorldWarII,theNDAAisrepeatinghistoryformanylocalcommunitiespost-9/11.ThatswhyIworkedincoalitionwiththeBillofRightsDefenseCommittee,CoalitionforSafeSanFranciscoandtheSanFrancisco99%Coalitiontojoin
thedozensofcitiesandstatescallingonournationalleaderstorepealtheseNDAAprovisions.
