10:01:03:06 Narrator Debbie Senior lives in Coventry with her three daughters, five

year old Bethany, three year old Ruth and Hannah who is two.

Debbie separated from her husband two years ago and now she

juggles running the home with two part-time jobs and

motherhood. It’s exhausting work.

10:01:23:02 Debbie Senior It feels like a battle every day, from the time I get up to the time I

go to bed.

10:01:31:16 Narrator Bethany, the eldest, is the ring leader of this girl gang.

10:01:38:19 Narrator A serial hair puller who delights in her little sisters screams! Ruth

is cheeky, rude and disrespectful to her mum. And has a mean

temper on her. And little Hannah? Well she just copies her big

sisters.

10:02:00:14 Narrator Debbie’s parents live next door. They look after the girls when

Debbie’s at work.

10:02:04:11 Nan Ruth, that’s naughty. Stop it. That’s naughty!

that’s the wrong word actually, I should say they’re little devils!

10:02:20:21 Narrator Debbie’s mum and dad are supposed to clock off when she gets

back from work. But that hardly ever happens.

delight in sending their mum round the bend.

Supernanny, Jo Frost. In 16 years no child has got the better of

her, but sometimes parents are the toughest nuts to crack.

actually being aggressive hasn’t been addressed with any form

of discipline.

It’s like a big game at the moment isn’t it, for the girls? They’re

just getting mum’s attention by misbehaving and they’re running

mum ragged.

10:05:00:01 Narrator With the girls wrecking havoc, Debbie resorts to her only method

of discipline. Granddad.

10:05:06:21 Debbie Senior Dad! She’s just thrown a watering can at Jo and she’s throwing

over the fence and it has hit the corner of our house.

does is undermine herself in front of the children and that really

doesn’t help the situation.

along, they scribble on it and all that, and then it gets hard.

sisters and look after them.

I love the relationship that you see here with Bethany and her

Pops because they’re able to talk and communicate with one

another and I feel that Bethany feels that she’s being heard and

it’s something that I would to see developed with her mother.

going to do now? I mean she’s, look, she’s right by that bus. I

suggest you go and get her and I stay by the pram because right

now she’s right by that van.

grow up hearing their mother demean them using them words, is

just, will really lower their self-confidence and their self-esteem.

not having any of it.

I’m not messing. I am tired and I’ve had enough. Every night it’s

and have some time to herself. Instead she’s being held hostage

10:11:04:24 Narrator Supernanny has spent a day analysing single mum, Debbie

Senior and her three girls. She’s seen how little respect the girls

have for their mum and how Debbie relies on her own parents to

keep them under control.

10:11:18:01 Debbie Senior Dad, can you come round? They’re going absolutely berserk!

10:11:23:20 Narrator It’s time for Debbie to hear some harsh truths.

10:11:27:11 Jo Frost Three beautiful young girls.

10:11:31:08 Debbie Senior Yes.

10:11:31:16 Jo Frost High spirited and lively.

10:11:36:07 Jo Frost But, Debbie the children’s behaviour. The way they treat one

another with no respect at all.

10:11:44:07 Jo Frost And they’re running wild, thinking that they can behave just the

way they want to and they are getting away with it and that is a

problem. Your communication skills with the children is what

teaches them how to communicate back. And they’re learning

nothing from you when you demand, when you shout and yell at

them. You shout at the children, they shout back at you.

Debbie, your children know that you don’t like them right now,

and you know why they know that you don’t like them right now?

By the way that you speak to them. With the way that you

interact with them, which is, you don’t. All they want to do is be

loved by you. All they want to do is spend time with you.

grandparents. And the reason why they have their grandparents

so much, is because of the dependency that you have with them.

Now, I think it’s wonderful that you have your family living right

next door to you. But Debbie your mum and dad, your mum and

dad are not going to be around forever.


10:13:17:12 Jo Frost And every time you call “Dad!” you undermine yourself and

become one of the, one of the kids. But these issues, Debbie,

they can be changed. They can be changed and they can be

addressed. But it takes strength and it takes determination and

an understanding of being able to bridge the gap between you

and your children. Because once you understand what you can

do yourself, to be able to better yourself as a parent, then your

children will benefit from that. And the impact will be massive.

10:14:04:02 Narrator Supernanny is determined to turn Debbie’s dream into reality.

So she rolls up her sleeves and lays down some rules for the

house.

10:14:12:22 Jo Frost No spitting, okay, because that is behaviour we do not do any

more. Don’t do that. Don’t worry about it.

10:14:24:04 Narrator Next stop, discipline. Here, there are three badly behaved kids,

so Supernanny’s famous naughty step won’t work. Instead

they’ll each get a naughty corner, this way Debbie can discipline

all three girls at once.

10:14:39:05 Jo Frost I want you to give them a warning, that is the first stage of the

discipline, and that warning will be to come down to their level,

give them eye contact and in a very firm voice, and Debbie, I’m

going to use you as an example, come down as if you’re one of

the children, okay? And it’s “Do not do that”.

10:15:00:23 Narrator The final stage of Supernanny’s discipline system is the Reward

Chart. Every time a girl is naughty, mum will remove a petal from

her flower, and if she’s good, a petal will be added. If one of the

girls gets ten petals, she’ll get a treat.

10:15:16:20 Jo Frost Your special Art book, okay, to draw a picture in and then, this

box to put your creative stickers on top! But if you’re naughty, if

your behaviour is naughty and you have to go on the naughty

corner, then mummy will take one of your petals off and put it

back into your pot.

10:15:42:16 Narrator Almost immediately the discipline system is put to the test.

Bethany is given a warning for picking on Ruth, but just moments

later she’s pushed her to the ground.

10:15:54:00 Debbie Senior What you did wrong was push her over like that [10:15:56:04

INAUDIBLE - BETHANY TALKING OVER DEBBIE] You’re going

in the naughty corner. I can’t tell you, oh, but you will.

clearly why she’s there.

10:16:09:21 Debbie Senior You’ve been put here because of the way you knocked Ruth

over.

10:16:19:10 Narrator Bethany has to stay on the naughty corner for five minutes, a

minute per year of her age, but she’s got other ideas!

10:16:27:05 Jo Frost If the child gets off from the naughty corner, then you must be

consistent and place the child back on the naughty corner, so

that they recognise that you will do the same thing every time

they get off of the corner, hence the child learns they might as

well not get off.

10:17:08:07 Jo Frost What do you mean “Would you like to sit back on it”? She was

on there and that’s where she should be, on there. Back onto

that corner.

but it won’t help when Debbie’s out and about with them.

Supernanny wants to teach Debbie a technique for keeping the

girls close to her and out of danger.

10:18:54:16 Jo Frost We’re walking straight ahead and then turning to get to the play

area. Well I was.

10:19:03:20 Jo Frost Wait a minute. What I want you to do… is to be able, allow the

girls to have the sense of freedom to run but when you say

“Stop” it means they have to wait there.

10:19:18:12 Jo Frost If they continue to run it means that they have to come back and

hold on to that pram. Okay. Good girls. This behaviour is

wonderful because you’re staying by mummy, okay, and you’re

not running off too fast so I can see you and now I trust you to do

a break for it right across a busy road.

behaving very good a while and, and getting that back.

10:22:06:12 Narrator Supernanny’s next target is bed time. She wants to stop Debbie

spending a gruelling two hours in Bethany and Ruth’s room trying

to get them to sleep. First, Debbie must kiss them goodnight and

leave the room.

10:22:26:24 Narrator When Ruth gets up Supernanny shows Debbie how to put her

back.

10:22:33:12 Debbie Senior Okay. Bed time darling, get back into bed.

10:23:21:17 Narrator It doesn’t take long before she’s out of bed again. This time

Debbie mustn’t say anything at all, but Ruth is used to

misbehaving in order to get a reaction. This is the stage where

the gloves come off.

10:23:45:17 Narrator Over the next hour and a half Ruth gets out of bed a record 47

times!

10:24:12:21 Narrator Finally, Ruth gets the message and stays in bed.

calm, you just went through the steps of the technique, and as a

result all three of them are sleeping. Absolutely fantastic! You

have put a hundred percent in today and I’m very, very proud of

for the interactive and the play which is quite sad really.

I think, I noticed the difference. It wasn’t like “Oh, she’s just

doing it, she’s actually doing it because she wants to do it and
