be recognized.” The band earned 47 out of a

possible 50 points to win the award while facing a judge who was a real task master.

“This year’s Old West had a mili-tary judge so he was much stricter. He wanted good sound and perfect discipline which we lack sometimes,” Mickey said.

Ibero’s good karma didn’t end with the Class Act Award. At the afternoon field competition the band earned a Superior rating giving the group a double whammy.

“Knowing that we worked hard enough to be chosen over everyone else for both awards was absolutely thrilling,” sophomore Selena Cara-bajal said. “It was a total team effort on everyone’s part.”

Ibero could not have been more pleased with the day’s outcome.

“You never go in thinking you are an absolute shoe-in to win. You want to do your best and hope that that will be enough to achieve your goal. You have to go up, be proud, and represent your school as best you can,” Ibero said.

Call it fate, karma, luck, or anything else you want, but

when Band Director Frank Ibero got up the morning of the Old West band competition, he had a good feeling about the day.

So while everyone else may have been surprised the band was selected as the Class Act winner at the marching competition, Ibero was not.

“I wasn’t surprised we won the

Class Act Award; we were very focused this year and we were on all day. From the moment we stepped off the bus downtown, right until we got off the bus at the high school,” Ibero said.

It was only the second time in thirty-one years the band had won the Class Act Award at the Best of the West weekend.

Winning the Class Act Award was a big deal for band’s majors, juniors Matthew Mickey and Bryce Meier.

“This was a big accomplishment to win. You have to concentrate on every detail, from the uniforms to how clean your instruments are,” Meier said.

“It was a great feeling to win the award,” Mickey said. “Being a drum major, we put in a lot of work behind the scenes and it felt good to

-Tieesha Alsides, 9th

“Going to the state basketball tournament every year, watching the boys play, and play-ing in the pep band was the best.”

-Kendra Cardwell, 11th

“The most memorable experience was Old West Weekend. It was fun and I worked really hard espe-cially since I had to learn a new instrument.”

-Bailey Venturino, 9th

“The most memo-rable time would be when we went to Sidney for pep band. We got to play really fun music and we laughed a lot.”-Samantha Wilhelm,
